This is being pushed by the guy who started Wreathes across America. He does few hundred thousand wreathes now for Veterans graves. He has built a nice Veterans cemetery where this flag monument is proposed. The interesting part is this one of the most depressed parts of Maine. The chances of him raising a billion in a county that doesn't have a pot to p iss in is a longshot. If you saw the houses close to the proposed area you would think Appalachia

it IS appalachia

I have family from Washington county and have spent plenty of time there so definitely am familiar. It would be neat to see it happen but I wish it was some kind of non profit. Doesn’t seem right at all to see people make money off veterans(I know it happens a lot etc, etc.)

You think that eyesore would be "neat"?

Said the people who whine about windmill and solar panel arrays.

You know what would be "neat"? Not to have that guy's phallus monument sticking up out of that beautiful forest land.

I was referring more to the entire development than the flag pole.

He wants to do somethingn to help vets, he can take the money its gonna cost to build that, and give it to Wounded Warriors, or some other vets charity, or build a medical center or something.

Which is a complete scam. Wreaths Across America is a non profit that solicits donations to place wreaths on veterans' graves. Wreaths Across America purchases wreaths from the for-profit Worcester Wreath Company -- which is owned by the same family that started and runs Wreaths Across America. Due to criticism of self-dealing, they implemented a "bidding" process to supply wreaths to the non-profit, but their company is the only one that submits a bid. The non profit was basically created to fill the void left when L.L. Bean canceled their wreath contract with Worcester Wreaths.

of course you think the dumbest idea I've ever heard in my life would be "neat"

Do you have a better idea for Washington County? They have probably the worst poverty in all of New England. No doubt the motivation behind the project is greed but that doesn’t mean it will be bad for the area.

almost anything would be a better idea for Washington County. It's in the middle of nowhere, with no infrastructure to support any meaningful tourism industry. I have a camp on a small lake in Washington County. The interior is completely unincorporated and devoid of year-round residents. The largest landowners are timber holding companies and blueberry growers. You'd be better off using some of this money to buy out unemployed/underemployed people to relocate them somewhere with actual economic opportunity. If you want to invest in the area, attracting a single manufacturing plant would do much more for the economy than some seasonal tourism jobs.

Apparently you haven't seen Worcestors forest land. Ugly Balsam forest that has the tops cut off the trees by an excavator with a cutter head on it. They want to be able to tip the branches for wreathes
