For a guy who's always preaching about eating the rich, you have a funny way of practicing what you're preaching!

I am happy to pay 10% more in taxes if millionaires are paying 20% more and billionaires are paying 50% more.

I think the stigma of those cars comes from the fact that the Detroit makes sh*tbox versions of those cars for rentals/fleets and the general public casts judgement on that. I've never seen AT&T or Comonwealth Edison, or any other bulk buyer of fleet vehicles, have a lot of Corollas, Accords, or whatever Nissan's model is.

I thought the rental car companies only had American brands because the dummies would protest otherwise. Little by little I've seen better cars being added to rental fleets, lately, at least in the West where you don't want some sh-tbox dying on you 200 miles from the nearest town.

I thought the rental car companies only had American brands because the dummies would protest otherwise. Little by little I've seen better cars being added to rental fleets, lately, at least in the West where you don't want some sh-tbox dying on you 200 miles from the nearest town.

it seems like I rarely end up with an American rental car -- cheap Korean cars seem popular -- I usually just take what I get for the standard "mid size" car (or SUV depending on where I'm going) and I often end up with a Kia or Hyundai (and occasionally a Ford).

Has Detroit produced even one model to compete in (my) Camry/Accord niche, ever? They have entries, but near as I can tell they have all been sh-t. Yes, nobody ever went broke underestimating the American public, but think how much money they could have raked in the last 30 years if they had even tried.

I believe Saturn filled that niche, but we all know how that turned-out. Loved my Saturn SL1. After ~10-years, "upgraded" to the VUE which was a disappointment, only due to the pending issues with the VTI. Still got ~10-years out of that before I traded it in (just-about the time the VTI was toast!). What did I trade for?... a Subaru Forester.

Weird. I always end up with American. I'm not a fan for the most part. There really isn't much elegance or beauty in them. See the links below. I looked at every luxury mid-sized SUV at the Twin Cities Autoshow. The only ones that seemed to have elegant styling and modern technology were the Japanese and Audi. I suppose the other European companies were nice as well, but I wouldn't want a BMW or Mercedes. Too costly to maintain.

I can’t speak for everyone of my age but I know my car habits have been influenced by the tuner culture (think The Fast and The Furious) from my teen years. The Japanese (and even the Europeans) companies can have basic, reliable models but also sportier models whereas to the Big Three “sportier” means “put a V8 in it!” I mean Ford had something going with the Focus for a bit and even GM had the Saturn Ion Redline but they never really stuck with it.

Basically, the Big Three want you to buy a Mustang or a Corvette and will sell you a Focus until you do, the Japanese want you to buy a Civic and if you want something faster they’ll see how big a turbo they can fit.

Saturn was the Corolla match, and also my first car, and also possibly the reason I'm still alive. The only serious accident I've been in in my life utterly destroyed my Saturn and left me without a scratch. I have no idea how since, being an American vehicle, I assume it was composed of pressed corn syrup, but... here I stand.

We had an SL1, Vue, and an Ion over the years. Really liked those cars. We now own Honda's.

My wife has loved her new Blazer (she's had it all of three weeks). I was a little leery of it being a (very) first run model, but it's basically a parts car of proven tech, built with the Camaro as it's very, very, close cousin.

Yes, it's an SUV, but it's the same size as her old Equinox was (2013) (new model is shrunken in size), and it looks and drives like a Camaro.

It also has the side profile of newer Land Rovers nearest to the rear cargo area, that almost aggressive downturn of the rear hatch.

I live in Maine and drive a lot on dirt roads (we have a cabin in the woods on a remote lake). I'm definitely not in the market for a luxury car or SUV, I'm looking for something practical. I have a Subaru Forester, which was pretty inexpensive, and a Toyota Tacoma, which at almost $40K is the most I've been willing to spend on a vehicle thus far (I'm cheap when it comes to cars). The Toyotas feel much nicer than the Subarus and I think next time I'll consider a hybrid Highlander instead (assuming someone doesn't have an all electric option I like by then).
