Re: BU Season Thread II: The Resurgence

Really?
Why?

If it went in it wouldn't have counted as a goal. So how could it be a shot ON goal

Oh, I didn't know you were talking about one that occurred after the buzzer, I didn't see the play. Then yeah, that absolutely shouldn't count.

Re: BU Season Thread II: The Resurgence

They have to score in order fo you to hear it. And since they're having some difficulty with that you probably won't. They did blast it for Moran's goal.

ETA - you're right!! They didn't blast it! Hmmm.

Trying to look on the bright side here. Tough because I can't say they're not playing "hard." But it would be nice if they wouldn't take the 3rd period "dominance" thing too far, so maybe this is a good thing if it makes them work harder to get the early lead. Obviously tonight they ran into a goalie that stood on his head, but still...

Re: BU Season Thread II: The Resurgence

The committee just made up a playoff between BU and PC? Was that even within the context of the rules back then?

Technically, yes. The tournament winner had an automatic berth into the Final Four (it was not the "Frozen Four" back then - that's a marketing term that stuck). There were two teams from the "East" (ECAC) and two from the "West (meaning WCHA/CCHA). In the East, the committee selected the second team. Typically it would be the championship game loser, but since BU lost in the semi-finals and was clearly the best team, they were given a "second chance" by the committee. Officially it was designated an "NCAA Qualifier Game" and the committee gave PC a little edge by putting the game in Schneider Arena. But I think everyone at the time knew that it was just an opportunity to get what the committee felt was clearly the best team in the East another opportunity. You have to understand that back then the East/West "thing" was fierce. There was tremendous regional pride. This was before crossover games and interlocking schedules. We stayed in the East and the western teams stayed in the West. I'll never forget (besides the fact that there were about 4000 Wisconsin fans at the Providence Civic Center, all wearing their red cowboy hats with the white "W" on them) the WCHA "cheer" that the fans would recite during the game. It was an amazing experience, and they didn't just bring their "pep" band. They brought their full Big 10 band (probably over 100 people). That was the Wisconsin team for whom Mike Eaves was the big star and they fully expected to come in here and roll over BU. They were shocked when we beat them. With Fiddler, O'Callahan (who made one of the greatest shifts I've ever seen in his own end with two forecheckers coming at him), Silk, etc., BU was a wagon that was not going to be stopped, especially when they were "revived" by the committee. They made it their mission not to embarrass the committee after the faith that was bestowed in them. I remember in the hotel after the game how ecstatic everyone was. It was an incredible experience and a GREAT way to end my college experience. :D

Yeah, he sabotaged the bags. All the BU players actually were using 9-irons when they thought they were pulling 5-irons...he changed the lofts so the shots would all go over the net...

Tomlin was in the stands watching so he could learn how to get his team to win big games...
