Re: BU season thread I - 2014-2015

Official attendance listed at 2239 in the box score. There must have been a heck of a lot of people sneak in the side door... No way that arena was less than 60% full tonight.

The jerseys were very sweet. I would not vote that they replace the current third jersey, but I'd hope they get added into the rotation.

Pretty cool being back at Walter Brown. Apart from the seat cushion, I'd say I like it more than Agganis. Hopefully a game ther becomes a somewhat common occourance.

I wonder if that was the "paid" attendance. Season ticket holders were offered free tickets if they responded by a certain time. Since WBA seats 3,800, there had to be 3,000+ at the game. Very few empty seats and a lot of people standing.

It brought back a lot of good memories. Agganis can't hold a candle to the atmosphere at WBA. But no larger, modern area could.
As much as I loved games at WBA, the overall experience at Agganis is eons ahead as far as being a major player in college hockey.

Season ticket holders also got to hear Mike Eruzione speak and with a Q&A at the Eilberg Lounge before the game. Eruzione obviously has this sort of thing down to a science. Talked about how he got to BU, what it was like playing here then, and the dominoes that had to fall for him to get to the 80 Olympic Team. Also spoke a lot about playing for Parker and Brooks, and what was accurate or not in the movie Miracle.

He also had some interesting things to say about Jack Eichel.
Said how great it is "when your best player is also your best teammate." How much Eichel loves the whole college experience.
Said it wouldn't surprise him if Eichel came back for a second year, given how young he is and how much another year could help his further development. Onviously would have a lot to do with what immediate plans the team that drafts him has for him, but it was nice to hear.

Also told a story on how Eichel flew in from a prospects camp, Quinn picked him up at Logan and Eichel asked him to drive him directly to his class.
Apparently he is a smart young man, as well as a supreme hockey prospect.

As for the jerseys ... I like the alternates now better than the older Detroit Red Wings version. I wish they were go back to the Terrier on the front instead of a number. How many numbers do you need - back, both sleeves AND front?
I thought they looked like giant cherries in these thrownbacks, although it was interesting to see "University" on the front..
The USA throwbacks were terrific.

Re: BU season thread I - 2014-2015

A few more things on Friday's game.

- I watched all four guys in suits behind the BU bench (Yeah, I know Albie was on a recruiting trip. Work with me.) don the Scarlet and White at WBA.

- I loved that they hung the older banners. Though they looked like they have been buried in a closest somewhere. (Get out the iron!)

- My wife reminded me of a great WBA story: She was late to band for a BU-Indiana State b-ball game and walked in the back door with Larry Bird.

- The site lines from mid-section to the far goal are less than ideal. I forgot how many goals I never actually saw go in, just a red light and wave of noise.

- Oy, the men's room lines. Glad the double secret probation bathrooms are still the best kept secret in BU hockey annals.

- The USA Team is big and skilled. Cason looked like a kid out there next to all the tall trees in USA jerseys.

- I still can't believe defkit missed this game for practice. Practice! :)

Yeah, probably poor planning on my part. I should have put this higher up on the priority list when figuring out games to try to get to.

One clarification - I really like the uniforms they wore, but would not want to see them regularly. Too much Scarlet.

Too much Scarlet.

You can never have too much Scarlet!!!! :)

One other tidbit from the Mike Eruzione thing. He said that:

"Mike Euzione!!!!! Winthrop Massachusetts!!!!"

"Who do you play for??"

"The Untied.....States.....of America!!"

was dramatic license by Hollywood. Boo. I didn't want to know that. Though of course it didn't happen like that. :)

There were more than a couple of things in that movie that I understand were Hollywood exaggeration.

Re: BU season thread I - 2014-2015

like OC complaining that someone kept him from winning a ring!!!!! :D

Well, portraying Rob McClanahan as a member of the UMinn team with that brawled with BU...

1. McClanahan wasn't a member of that team.

2. McClanahan wasn't a fighter.

Matt O'Connor is drawing interest of several of the Canadian NHL teams, according to an Edmonton Journal article. That article quoted Elliote Friedman of Canada's Sportnet reporting that representatives of the Maple Leafs talked with O'Connor, an undrafted free agent and that Craig MacTavish, the Oilers GM (and father of 2015 BU recruit Sean MacTavish), met with him a few weeks back. Vancouver and Ottawa also were mentioned as teams interested in him. Last summer, O'Connor was invited to three NHL development camp: Chicago, Rangers and (I think) Toronto. It certainly would not be surprising if O'Connor, who will be 23 in February, leaves for the pros following this season.

It should be noted that Friedman and Sportsnet were the ones floating the Eichel-to-the-Q rumors last week, which Eichel firmly deflated after Friday's game.
"I'll shoot it down now," he said. "I dont plan on going anywhere the second half of the year. I'm perfectly content staying at BU. I love this place, so I'm not going anywhere."

And apparently, the Journal is still confusing BU and BC.

Re: BU season thread I - 2014-2015

Favorite games at WBA all were quarterfinal ECAC playoff series and one in NCAA's and in those days QF loss meant the end of the season as did a SF loss (except in '78 of course). In all of these games place was rocking and standing room all over the place. 1976 late flurry beats BC and Skidmore 6-5, with Terry Meagher closing it out. Lost in National SF to Minnesota. In 1977 BC again almost ends their season when Joey Mullen scored 4 goals I believe but Ricky Meagher matching almost goal for goal with his own hat trick in a late 8-7 win. Lost to Michigan in National SF. In 1978 was the all time best game ever at WBA. BU beats UNH in OT 6-5 when Bobby Boileau tucks in Leblonds shot off the end board. Frankie Roy almost ended it on a breakaway towards the end of regulation. If they lost here there would be no second chance or NC and after a BU SF loss to Providence BC wins ECAC ouch but we got the big prize later against BC. In 1979 BU down to Vermont 3-0 late in the second period ties in regulation 3-3 and John Bethel with a hat trick goal in OT wins it. Dartmouth bounced them out of NCAA bid in a SF loss and this time no second chance. UNH wins ECAC. The only losing game was the 1984 loss in National QF's to Jerry York and Bowling Green. In a total goals two game series BU wins 6-3 first night but cant protect a three goal lead for 60 minutes and loses the second game 4-1, which caused a sudden death series deciding OT which was alot of back and forth before Gary Galley blistered a slap shot past Cleon and then they went on to win NC under York (doubly painful). Last one was the final QF in 1985 (Cullen era) before HE was established. It was two games then mini game kind of dumb format. Series ended up 1-1. Lost to UNH first night beat them second night , mini game played after game two was tied so came down to sudden death and MacGregor went in alone from the blue line after a UNH turnover and slapped it past the UNH goalie, we the beat BC in ECAC SF in what could be considered an upset and then season was ended once again by the eventual NC this time RPI with Adam Oates and Joey Juneau. Three hoop games that stick out were when Purdue and Duke came in as national powers and of course the Eddie Bird game which I believe BU won. That's what I got.

That's a history lesson my friend. Posts like Jofa's are the reason they should play at least 1 game/ yr there

I agree. For others who attended, was it successful enough for a repeat? And if so, how often?

Personally I think it was and I think once a year, or perhaps every other year would work. I don't think it needs to just be for exhibitions either, I'd like to see some games that "count" when the students are in town as well.

Really? A game that counted? They'd be in the visitors' locker room, at best... at worst, one of the little rinky-dink locker rooms underneath the stands. Before a game that counted, wouldn't you rather them be in their own, awesome-quality locker room?

 Somehow I think they would manage just fine without the plush locker room for a game every one or two years.

I'm serious, though. For an exhibition game when the students are starting to file out, sure. But suppose it did make a difference -- remember, there are other differences in the two rinks on the ice, too -- would you risk a loss in what could be an important game because of some nostalgia? It's small and it's cramped. It's been ten years since they've played there regularly, and the last time they were in front of fans there before Friday was at midnight madness back in 2007(?).

Re: BU season thread I - 2014-2015

I would say once every other year for an exhibition game at most. It was great going back there and experience the arena we last played a game in ten years ago. If you do it every year it will quickly become another Frozen Fenway and people are not going to care anymore. Aside from the nostalgia factor, the overall experience at Agganis is much better. There are many seats at WBA that are not very good for watching the game. Great to be back in WBA last Friday and it was a great atmosphere but let's not overdo it.

Love the throwback uniforms. Get rid of the candy canes which aren't that different than the regular uniform. Though I agree that there is a bit too much scarlet (sorry Scarlet ;))

If we had Baillargeon and Rodrigues, and if Demko was in net, BU may have won that game..... :D In seriousness, great display by Team USA (without Matthews!) and looking forward to them bringing the gold home.

Re: BU season thread I - 2014-2015

Okay, then a game against UMass Amherst. So a game that "sorta" counts.

This game should also help the team moving forward. After surviving the drowning wave in the 1st, they dug in and stayed with them for two periods. Probably the most skill they'll face all year.
