BU Recruiting Update, Part 4

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 4

Yeah, Wise's stock has dropped since he and Wahlstrom were mentioned as likely Top-5 prospects a couple years ago. He seems to have acknowledged that he had some early struggles with the U-17s, and it will be interesting to see if he regains some momentum on the U-18s.

After being a Globe All-Scholastic at Central Catholic, Wise didn't have the impact with the U17s that many anticipated. Still, his numbers improved enough in the second half to finish fourth on the team in scoring and earned some games with the U18s. A USA Hockey article says he looked to Jack Eichel for advice midway through the season. Will be interesting to see if he can take a step up in his U18 season.

2018 recruits Joel Farabee, Jake Wise and Tyler Weiss--along with Brady Tkachuk--invited to play in the Sept. 21 All-American Prospects Game in Buffalo. They were three of the top four NTDP U17 scorers last season.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 4

TSN’s Bob McKenzie’s top 20 for the 2018 NHL draft has Brady Tkachuk at #3 and 2018 recruit Joel Farabee at #19. Also in the top 20 are BC recruit Jack McBain #14, Harvard recruit Oliver Wahlstrom #13 and recent Harvard decommit Bode Wilde #10.
If anything, Brady is considered to be even more physical, abrasive and agitating than his older brother, but also possesses a strong nose for the net and ability to make plays. Seven of 10 scouts surveyed have Tkachuk as a top-five prospect in this draft and none of the 10 scouts had him outside their top 10.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 4

As had been rumored, St. Sebastian’s goalie Drew Commesso, a recent decommit from New Hampshire, has now committed to BU for the 2020-21 season. Commesso, from Norwell, Mass, is listed at 6’2”, 160 on the Cape Cod Whalers 16U roster, his fall midget team. Last season, he had a 1.77GAA and .932 save % for the Arrows.

This past Spring, SBN’s Jeff Cox ranked him as “one of the top two goaltenders in the country at this age group.” (2002s) More later on the blog.

Albie needs a raise.

We're going to need a goalie before him, right? At least for the 19-20 season.

I would think so. Max Prawdzik is a red-shirt sophomore, so he should be around for 19-20. Can't expect more than another two seasons from Oettinger. Dallas signed Ben Bishop to a six-year deal but you'd expect they'd want Oettinger to play at the next level after 18-19.

4.5 star prospect Drew Commesso commits to @TerrierHockey. Likely NTDP bound goalie w/ size, athleticism & poise. Dominant at #Select15s.

Not OHL territory, but this is a massive get for BU. Formerly committed to UNH; arguably the top '02 goalie in the 🇺🇸

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 4

To start, please note that I'm not writing this to pick on Drew Commesso. I hope he is ultimately happy with his College choice. The particulars of his recruitment make a great example of why recruiting should be addressed. When he committed to UNH, he said he was excited to help rebuild a down on its luck Program and that he liked a Campus that was not in the City. Now he commits to a Program that couldn't be more in the city and couldn't be farther from needing a rebuild.

Mike Buckley was the prominent goalie coach at UNH at the time of recruitment and he left to become the full time goalie coach for the NHL Penguins. I am sure that was a huge factor. Overall, I agree that recruiting is tough and needs to be fixed but cant blame a kid if a coach leaves a program they committed to. Decommits are fairly common nowadays with all the moving parts. I believe Farabee was also a UNH commit before committing to BU as well.

Players commit to coaches, not necessarily programs - especially with respect to a goalie. When the coach leaves the program before the player shows up, we shouldn't be knocking the kid because he decided to change his mind. The coach has every right to change his mind and make the best move for him and his family, the player has the same right.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 4

As I said, I'm not knocking the player. The fact that the Goalie Coach leaving UNH played into his decision to decommit is just another reason why recruiting should be fixed.
