Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Terriers still on the recruiting trail for 2014 and 2015. Forwards Cameron Hughes and Tyler Sheehy plan to visit BU.

Central Scouting midterm rankings for N.America of five recruits: MacLeod #44 Letunov #68 Carpenter #146 Phelps #162 Piccinich #164.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Another day, another recruit. USHR reports BU has a commitment for 2014 from 6-2, BB&N LD Brien Diffley, calling him "A strong skater, who can take it end-to-end." A month ago, USHR posted:

Diffley’s Stock Rising
BB&N has a one-man breakout in 6’2”, 180 lb. senior LD Brien Diffley, who we got to see in action in the Knights 4-2 loss to St. Sebastian’s Wednesday. We’ve seen Diffley before, and went into the season considering him as a high DIII/low DI borderline kid, but his stock is rising. There are not a lot of senior d-men out there who can rush the puck like Diffley.

And here's some evidence of that.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

OTB reports BU added more size and physicality on defense for next season with a verbal from 6'3" 215 RD Ori Abramson.
"6’3 defender will be imposing contributor on the blue for the Terriers"

The Toronto native plays for NJ Hitmen in the USPHL. Had committed to Providence for 2012 but illness forced him to leave. Abramson has a 3-15-18 line in 30 games for the Hitmen and played in this past Monday's USPHL-Premier Division All-Star Game at Merrimack College.

Video reel: #2 in red. Does this reel bring another #2 to mind?

2014 recruit class defensemen: MacLeod, Hickey, Diffley, Abramson

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

More about Abramson, who was also pursued by Northeastern:

A rugged defender with offensive skills as well, he was a recent USPHL defensive player of the week and, according to JerseyHitmen.net, “scored this seasons highlight reel goal ripping a puck shortside after beating a Whalers attacker with a spin-o-rama.” Abramson, a 2011 Ontario Scholar, has significantly improved his skating over recent years to prepare for NCAA D1 hockey.

BU defense for next season:
Jr. Grzelcyk, Oksanen, Carrabino
So. MacAfee, Somerby, Ryan
Fr. MacLeod, Hickey, Diffley, Abramson

Could be that Ryan is a full-time forward next year.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

2016 recruit Clayton Keller takes over the team scoring lead for top-ranked Shattuck Prep after hattrick vs. Benilde. 25-30-55-18 PIMs in 37 games. 2nd in goals scored. 2014 recruit Chase Phelps close behind with 20-29-49.

Keller is playing at an insane level. He struggled to be a consistent impact forward initially (just a 98) at the U18 level but now, he's starting to take over games. Really smart on the puck and natural scoring ability.

Abramson adds real size to the D-corps, strong kid is tough to play against and when I saw him, he really doesn't force much, makes a smart simple play..takes care of business. Diffley will be in a different role but by the time he gets to BU he'll have added 10-20 pounds and similarly add some size to the D corps..

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

I copied and pasted this from what I wrote over on NU thread as it pertains to BU recruiting as well.

Jim Madigan, Jerry Keefe and Pat Foley were all in attendance for tonight's game between Springfield Cathedral and Austin Prep. Several kids already committed to various Hockey East and AHA schools. Biggest uncommitted prospects were Austin Prep '97 G Elijah Harris (Haverhill), Austin Prep '96 F Cam Russo and Springfield Cathedral '99 F Riley Prattson. AP defenseman JJ Layton (Peabody) is also seeing his stock rise.

AP's Bobo Carpenter (BU), SC's Peter Crinella (Holy Cross), Keith Petruzzelli (QU), DJ Petruzzelli (QU) and John Leonard (UMass) were the five committed recruits playing.

David Quinn was also in the building as were about 10 NHL scouts, including two from Buffalo Sabres.

Carpenter, #146 in Central Scouting's midterms, can certainly shoot it. 1:00 mark of this video.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

BU gets the second member of its 2016 class; Johnny McDermott, Westminster School, left shot forward.
http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=229606

USHR ‏@USHRhockey tweeted:
6-2/178 lb. Westminster LC Johnny McDermott, a '97 soph, commits to BU (fall '16). Exc. sk., makes plays. BC, PC, UConn, Union also in pic.

OTB posted earlier this week:
97 F John McDermott – Westminster School; Height: 6’2, Weight: 178

A number of scouts and coaches see the athletic, strong skating sophomore as a big time player in the making. Tough to contain as one of the younger players in prep school, McDermott’s skating ability and knack at keeping the puck on his stick make him a possession-driving forward who could be looked at to produce offensively at the D1 level as well.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Not related to McDermott commitment ...

Has anyone seen AJ Greer play? Coming fresh off the Kurker debacle I'm surprised that BU would chance a similar situation with Greer. I realize Division IA hockey in Mass and prep school hockey are two completely different animals, but still. I believe Wade Megan came in a year early and struggled as a freshman. Why chance it with the logjam up front next year? Maybe Greer is an overaged high school junior?

FWIW, KUA coach Tim Whitehead on Greer:

“AJ Greer has really emerged this season as an impact player for us, playing both forward and defense. As a Co-Captain, AJ has helped lead KUA to a 20-6-5 record so far, and a first place finish in the Lakes Region League. In 28 games played, AJ currently has 21 goals and 31 assists for 52 points (1.86 points per game).

“BU fans are going to love watching this young man play next year. AJ is an exceptional skater with high level skills and a heavy shot, so he’s always a threat to create something offensively. And at 6-3 210 lbs at just 17 years old, Greer is an imposing physical presence on the ice. He has the courage to block a shot for his teammates and take a hit to make a play, and he’s got an intimidating edge to his game.”

Yes, there is very likely some coach-hype in there, but he earned plenty of kudos from other sources. Greer is about a month and a half younger than Eichel and won't turn 18 until next December. Several early 2015 draft projections put him in the top 30. Has BU ever had two first-rounders in the same year?

Weren't Shattenkirk and Wilson in the same school class? Same draft class no clue.

My $.02 on Greer, I think 2014 is a gamble. Where Eichel is dominant already against older competition, Greer seems to be scratching the surface of that upside and I see the jump from prep to D1 as a huge one. It could pan out unbelievably well and then they have a top 5 and a top two rounder on their hands, but I worry about the developmental impact of putting someone into that level of hockey and expecting production so quick. I'd rather see a bridge year for him in juniors and see him hit the ground running after the draft. We'll see though. He's put on serious weight very quickly and his game seems to be getting much more effective for it. The things he does, offensively, at his size, are impressive.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

too bad another 2007 first rounder with shattenkirk ('"DR" angelo esposito'), didn't consider college.....

Esposito's family used the "threat of college" to up the major junior ante. Financing for a second supermarket. He is now toiling in Austria.
