Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Just in from USHR

6’1”, 203 lb. Sean Maguire of the Powell River Kings (BCHL), the all-tournament goaltender at the World Jr. A Challenge earlier this month, has committed to Boston University for next fall.

Maguire and Victoria's Wesley Myron were teammates on the gold-medal winning Canada West team.

Interview with Maguire at the Junior A Challenge

More details late tonight or tomorrow on the blog.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

This makes me feel slightly better about the goaltending situation for next year. Should be fun with two freshmen most likely rotating duties again, or could turn out very badly.

Why do you assume a rotation? That goes against what Parker has done for years? I'd say one will quickly emerge as the number one. I too feel a bit better about the situation, but I'd like to see a return to the two goalies seperated by a class year or two.

As far as recruits go, this is obviously very similar to the goaltending situation four years ago. Millan committed a full year before rollheiser; now O'Connor a year before Maguire.

Since I started following the team in 2004, BU has had good/great goaltending every season except 2007-2008. And before Curry, Fields and DiPietro had solid years.

It'll be interesting to see how this turns out.

The Rollheiser recruitment was a little different in that there was an underclassman goalie, Brett Bennett on the roster [you probably forced yourself to forget]. When it because apparent that Bennett wasn't the answer, BU sought another solution and pursued Rollie.

Maguire's coach at the World Jr. A's is also his coach at Powell River and he focuses on defense to create offense, not racehorse hockey, which is fairly prevalent in the BCHL. The coach took heat for picking his own goalie for the tournament, but Maguire proved him correct.

Meanwhile...Maguire's competition for the starting job next year, Matt O'Connor, was named USHL Goalie of the Week.

O’Connor posted a 1.46 goals-against-average and a .957 save percentage in two wins for the Phantoms. He equaled a USHL season high with 44 saves in the 4-1 win over Chicago on Friday. The second-year goaltender then made 23 saves in the 3-2 overtime victory against Cedar Rapids on Saturday, which tied him for the USHL lead with eight victories this season. The 19-year-old from Toronto, Ontario has won each of his last three starts and is fifth overall among League netminders with a 2.36 GAA while ranking tied for third with a .923 SV%.

Hopefully everyone has forced themselves to forget BB ;).

I did have him in mind when I made the post. I understood the pursuit of Rollheiser as "BB's got nothing, we need some insurance."

Interestingly, Millan committed in February of Curry's senior year. At that point, I believe most in the community still expected Brett Bennett -- a 5th round draft pick -- to be the heir apparent in that he hadn't had the chance yet to show he sucked. So, Millan has got to think it's going to be a two-year pine ride before he's the man. And then whaddayaknow.

The following is obviously a bit trivial and jumping the gun a bit: You've got O'Connor in the USHL and Maguire in the BCHL. You've got to pluck one to start a D-I game at MSG on Saturday. Who is it?

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

It doesn't make sense to me to be on this four year rotation of goalies
No neeed to bring in 2 on one year-hurts scholarship distribution
Has long been a BU trend

A long trend for the last 4 years? IIRC it was staggered for a long time before that?

Brett Bennett leaving a couple years early meant they had to offer to two goalies at the same time.
It will be tough to break the cycle unless someone down-the-road unless someone else doesn't stay for four years.

BB suffered from sitting for two years. if there was a rotation (:D) that may have played out differently.

Good question. FWIW, the USHR report concluded with "Of the two goalies, Maguire is a bit more refined, while O’Connor is still, even at his age, growing into his body."

Another 2012 recruit, Jarrid Privitera was "called up" to play for the USHL Dubuque Fighting Saints this week.

In other roster news, Jarrid Privitera, a Fighting Saints affiliate list player, will suit up for the team this weekend. Privitera currently plays for the Gunnery Prep, which is the where former Fighting Saint Nick Luukko played his prep hockey. Privitera, a Fighting Saints Futures Draft selection in 2010, is a 5’6, 150 pound forward. He is committed to Boston University, where his brother Alexx is currently on the team. Alexx Privitera played in the USHL for the Muskegon Lumberjacks last season.

“Jarrid has been someone we have been excited about since we drafted him last year,”[Coach Jim] Montgomery said. “He’s a dynamic skater who is a proven scorer as well. We are excited to have him in town, and we welcome him to the Fighting Saints family for this week of games.”

Didn't know that a junior A team could bring up a prep player for a handful of games, but apparently that's why these teams have protected lists of USHL-drafted players. At least Privitera will have "bu" on his sweater. ;)

Not sure if theres any truth to this but I saw this posted on the USHL message board today.

O'Conner has a lot on his mind. To de-commit to BU, who went and grabbed Sean Magurie, who will be their next starter. Leaves O'Connor wondering where to go, or to stay. The kid clearly has options, but its in his head.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Interesting. O'Connor knew BU was recruiting a second scholarship goalie. The only thing that might have changed things is if Millan had signed with Colorado last summere. In that case, O'Connor would have begun this season at BU.

Re: BU Recruiting Update, Part 3

Wow - this thread was waaaaay back. Anyway, Rogie posted the mid-term CSB rankings on the fan blog:

41 - Sam Kurker (2013)
43 - Rob Baillargeon (2013)
112 - Danny O'Regan (2013)
123 - Kevin Duane (2013)
131 - Brendan Collier (2013)
133 - Matthew Lane (2012)

I'd say 2013 is shaping up pretty well:D

Granted no top rounders, but pretty nice nonetheless.

Not having top rounders could be a blessing in disguise. We know how the last one turned out ;).
