BU Hockey '24-'25: Reloaded for another Frozen Four run

That's very true. When we were in school it was easier to wait to see if your team made it before booking travel. Airfare was cheaper and the event was in smaller cities like Providence or Albany that you could drive to or dumpy cities like Cincy that nobody wanted to go to. It also didn't seem to have as many people who would go every year regardless of whether their team was in the Frozen Four. Much harder to do a spontaneous trip nowadays.

Regarding the fan base/travel discussion. I know in theory we're all rich due to your Boston University diploma's 🙃 but airfare runs $600-$700 dollars. The tickets are what? $250? The hotel, food, etc. Going to the Frozen Four could cost you $2k per person. It's a factor. Oh, and Western was a 5.5 hour car ride.

BU Hockey: Waiting for the Goodbyes...
Eliminating the flight makes a difference, although I’m not sure if this were a 5 hour drive from campus (meadowlands or something) that we would have had a significantly larger contingent:… although maybe we would pick up some extra drivers from NYC. Likely would have been fewer true western fans and more neutral observers just there to watch hockey.

Yeah. Western Michigan has more than hockey for its sports base, I suspect before this run, a fair few of the students there were "oh right, hockey too." I mean, it's a MAC school, so its got D1 football and Basketball and the works. Being in Kzoo means hockey literacy among the local students cause of the k-wings but it's not like a "hockey is god and the only sport that is" school. BU is probably more of a "hockey is our flagship sport" than WMU.

It's just the WMU is typically a MAC doormat unless they get a hot year, so a chance at a National Championship in ANYTHING is gonna big a big deal. Add that they could drive there in day, and if they were carpooling to swap driving shifts, drive back too. You're gonna get a lot of people going.

I talked to a number of WMU fans this weekend and they claim that it's a hockey school despite having a full D1 portfolio in the MAC.

As far as BU is concerned, it's probably the worst turnout I've seen from BU fans. I don't know if it was the destination or that they're just "used to it" but they did not represent as they have in the past

Huh. That's changed then since my time at Ball State when they were turning out for Football.

Ryan Greene not scoring the past two months is a problem.
What was up with that?? He had such a promising first half of the year.

I’m not sure what it says about BU that both their goals came from scrums at the net. No real shots set up. Also, as I complained about earlier this season, they have a hard time winning a face off to start a power play and when that happens, they can’t get set up in time and control the play. And the one time they did, they scored within 10-15 seconds.

A friend mentioned that last night’s refs were ECAC refs. And that they’re not used to the fast pace of the game. Mind you I didn’t think any of the calls or rulings were incorrect at all. But it did seem they were out of position a bit and slow with some whistles.

Speaking of Greene, he just signed with Chicago.
He's likely to be in the Blackhawks lineup again Montreal (and you know who) tomorrow to burn off an ELC year.
From The Athletic today:
The Blackhawks drafted Greene, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound center, in the second round in 2022. They envisioned him as a reliable, two-way center who could play in a top-nine role. He’s been that throughout much of his college career, and the Blackhawks believe he might not need any development time in the AHL. They’re penciling him into next season’s lineup.

Boston University coach Jay Pandolfo thought Greene’s development could lead to that, too.

“He looks like a pro — his game overall, his details defensively,” Pandolfo said. “He can skate, coming through the neutral zone with speed, attacking with speed, better at protecting pucks. Just all the things that go into making you a good pro, he’s really developed in all those areas in the last three years.

Zetterberg in the portal.
There have to be several on the current roster who are looking at the spots expected to open up, and looking over their shoulders at the recruiting class that's expected to come in (plus the current and possible portal additions) and assessing how they do/don't fit.

Scott Lachance signed with New Jersey. Disappointing.
That is disappointing- I thought with his deep ties to BU and not winning it all, he would come back for unfinished business. Not many of those types anymore- BC had a few last year.

I don’t think we will have a senior on the roster next year if I read what’s going to happen. I guess that’s today’s college hockey with the free agent transfer portal. Most of the depth leaves if they are not playing much as upperclassmen.
