BU '23-'24 Season: Pandomania

Holy smokes. This thread is a master class in wildly overreacting to one game. I get that BU fans are angry after losing a Beanpot final in which they controlled play from start to finish, but just because the bounces didn't go your way doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the team as a whole. Pretty much every program in the country, including NU, would trade their players for BU's in a heartbeat. It is crazy to suggest this team is "too talented" or "too fancy" or "doesn't finish their chances" or whatever else is being said here. You dominated play, doubled NU's shots on net, and you got unlucky and lost. That's just hockey. If anything, BU's performance in the Beanpot final bolsters, not hinders, its outlook in the NCAA tournament. BU looked fantastic on the big stage. (The only legitimate gripe here is the goaltending. That criticism is fair. The rest of the team looked great though.)

Reading this did made me feel better. Thank you for that. However, I stand by my assessment that this team played tight Monday night on the big stage. Having watched them when they are determined and confident, I can see the difference in how they move the puck around, get pucks to the net, and their willingness to get to the dirty area.

Providence is going to be a big test this weekend. Especially Friday night, on the road, after a brutal loss. It's a perfect storm to lose by 3 goals. How they handle this game will tell us a lot about what this team is made of. Oh, and it bears repeating that their best player is 17 years old. 17. It's games like Friday where the Upperclassman need to shine.

BU Hockey: We Expect a Lot

You are only partially correct!

Completely wrong on at least one player. NU doesn't want Jack Hughes back. We "lost" him via the transfer portal to BU. He was a true addition by subtraction. His 5-11-16 line and team "leading" -14 + 15 PIM was traded for Alex Campbell's 15-13-28 +7 and 6 PIM line. It's hard to believe that Hughes, as your 3rd line center and, at times, LW with Celebrini, has a grand total of 7 assists to go with 6 goals. He should e banned from shooting when there is a goalie in net. All he has to do is get the puck to Celebrini or one of the Hutsons and his assist total will bulge. He is a better passer than scorer, but seems to believe otherwise.

As much as it pains me to say it, even Stevie Wonder can see that BU has some terrific players with outstanding speed and stick skills. They are well coached and should go deep into the NCAAs - if they stop skating all around the O zone trying to create the prettiest goals ever seen. Perhaps having so many NHL draft picks has a downside. Undrafted guys like the Hryckowian bros., Jack Williams or Vinny Borgesi have a chip on their shoulders and have something to prove to the doubting scouts.

One last question: We saw Monday, as we already knew, how much a top flight goalie can mean to a team. How did your staff not see that Commesso would sign, Duplessis was allowed(?) to transfer leaving the blue paint empty? Perhaps the coaches recruited one too many skaters. Caron is capable, but just being capable is not enough if you hope to end up as the top dogs.

Caron is good enough to win titles with. He wasn't in the Beanpot final. Tough time to have a rare bad game, leading to typical overreaction from some quarters.

I agree, he is good enough to win against elite teams and in tournament situations. He had been very good over the last several weeks and was a key part of many wins including last week’s win against BC. He just didn’t have his best night, and we really needed it.

Does seem a tad bit ironic that the guy we had is a Richter Award Top 10 finalist, however.

Season ticket renewal announcement went out and there is some news there. Agganis will get a new video scoreboard and new audio system for next season. The Women’s team will play at Agganis for the Fall semester as the previously announced renovations to Walter Brown Arena finish. Some good money going into upgrading both arenas this year!

Michigan coming to Agganis for two games.

A friend told me earlier this year he knew the person from Bose who signed the contract with BU. Turns out that contract was signed the same week the current audio system blew and we used those speakers.

So, given that the women's team will be playing at Agganis because of renovations to WBA, would that mean neither building would be able to have Northeastern play there if the rumors are true and their team cannot play at Matthews next season?

Lets not get carried away. Vinny left BU to go to Quinnipiac because of the defensive system in front of him. Any goalie who plays at Quinnipiac is going to put up stellar numbers. He went from a 2.48 GAA and .903 at BU to 1.92 and a .918 overnight at Quinnipiac. If you are a goalie at BU you are going to get hung out to dry a lot because of the offensive minded defense - they rush the puck and are out of position a lot. They score a lot but their defense aint stellar. Look at the Beanpot goal where Hutson takes out his own player at the dot that leads to a NU goal....

Improving the sound system is a must since what is there is absolutely useless!

Ok, Providence. We have had success against this program over the last several years. They are light on the scoring, but also don’t give up much. Just like Jay said - havoc around the net and get those screens, rebounds and greasy goals. Hopefully a good rebound game.

I don’t know what to say about that one. Not great, not bad. I guess what I expect from Providence. Another blown lead isn’t good, got bit on the shorthand again in limited chances for them (although we did get the shorty on the first kill). Poor performance in the shootout, but who cares, it’s a tie.

Agreed. Not good not bad. I do think they need to find a way to put more pucks actually on net and maybe be a little less fancy? The perfect shot isn't always going to be there, and it seems like teams are content to let BU just skate around and posess.

No other impressions on last night’s tie? I think if we hadn’t lost 2 to BC and NU in the last 2 weeks (maybe split those 4), I wouldn’t mind a tie down there. I think tonight is a must win at home for confidence and to help maintain top 4 in the PWR. If we had a regulation win, we would have moved into #2. North Dakota got thumped by Colorado College.

While I thought we looked very good in the BP final, last night was a different story. But I credit a lot of that to Leaman. We used a very different breakout than we usually do - straight ahead passes by the d up along the boards, very few diagonal passes to a streaking center or winger. I guess it's the only way to counter their schemes. PC really limited our offensive opportunities off the rush. Hopefully having last change will help us be able to play our style.

Guys that had a good first half have cooled off: Lachance, Tuch (other than the BP opener), Kaplan. Quinn Hutson is looking more one dimensional lately.

I would like to see some line-up changes tonight to light a fire. Somehow we actually moved up to a tie to #2 in the Pairwise last night, but I have a feeling a drop of 2-3 spots awaits us if we don't win tonight (I won't claim to understand how it works at all).
