BU '23-'24 Season: Pandomania

Besides Celebrini, this forward group has underachieved. They need to simplify their game in the offensive zone and get the puck to the net

BU reminds me of the UNH teams from 20-25 years ago.
-Loads of skill up and down the lineup
-Will win a ton of games
-Wont beat a good team in a rock fight in a big game.

Thinking the same thing. Almost too talented? If that's possible. Winning a national championship or big game needs a team built like the 1980 Olympic Team. Especially in college hockey or amateur sports in general. NU is closer to that make up than BU to some extent.

Well…not exactly. You’re right if it’s one game. The problem is, NU has to even GET to the tournament first. Then they have to win a regional just to get to the FF. Then two more against great teams. Remember you probably have to get to 14 in the PWR just to get in. Congrats on the win but let’s not get carried away.

The thought of NU winning an NCAA tournament game is laugh out loud funny. Nevermind them actually making it in this year but then also winning a game. NUs season will end in HE QFs.

I'm not saying NU is going I'm saying BU isn't winning it. They over built they are the Yankees of college hockey. It's not what you need, think the recent winners from Hockey East PC and UMASS, one or two good NHL caliber players, good goalies and scrappy 3rd and 4th liners. That's the formula.

Not the Yankees, that implies superstars up and down the lineup. This team has a lot of good to very good players with 71 and 20 being the “Yankees”. If Tuch was a Yankee he would have one timed the puck instead of holding it and letting the goalie get set. He couldn’t one time it because he’s not a “Yankee”.

They played tight all night. On the big stage under the bright lights, they wilted. This team is missing an intangible. An “it” factor.

Time to say fuck it and just play. You can’t soar if you’re trapped in your own head.

Brutal loss.

Having said that, the 3 on 3 OT for this tournament is a joke. (They still probably would have lost, but still … ). Shit sandwich night.

You are correct, NU will not win a national championship this year. That said, since they got healthy, they are a combined 4-2-1 against BC, BU, Maine, and QPac......not sure they are going to face much better than that. So if its laugh out loud funny for NU to win a natty, its even funnier to think BU has a chance, since they are 1-2 against the big joke that is NU.

Jay thinks they played a good hockey game. Hmmm. Do you agree?

If you are going by time of possession, pressure, dictating play, yes. Similar to the BC series, only NU didn’t play anywhere near to the level of BC. We really limited their opportunities with blocked shots and good sticks on D most of the night. BU was the better team in that sense. But obviously we didn’t reap the rewards with a few more goals. Every time we took the lead was a chance to really grab all the momentum and go up by 2 - we failed to capitalize. I think the phantom penalty was obviously huge. Kill it and it’s probably a win. Jay was as frustrated as he gets. What are you going to do? Like he said, you need to move on. It seems the Huskies have quite the Beanpot mojo going on. Kings of the 3 x 3 OT (which is a travesty) in this tournament for sure I guess. This hurts, but there are bigger fish to fry. The OT loss barely moved the needle in the PWR. We are still 3 , and they are still 20. We are assured of making the NCAA’s and they are probably not making it without a HE tournament championship. Let’s see what happens. Forget BC, these are the guys I want to send to the golf course in March right now! Need a little better goaltending and killer instinct in trophy games. Hopefully they can get on the right side of a few of these in March and April.

Honestly? Yeah. They did play well. They dominated possession. But that alone isn't going to win games. BU has a problem finishing more often than not, and certainly are not strong enough in net currently.

Between the issues finishing and in goal, theyre good for basically spotting their opponents a goal a game. Thats not a winning formula for close games.

I have been a big fan of Caron after a checkered start. This was not one of his better games. His playing of the angles was off.
Sometimes it is more difficult for goalies in games when they are seeing so little action.
Northeastern had eight shots on goal through two periods, and at least two were wide and not actual shots on goal.
The better team does not always win, which is why goaltender is so important.
I haven't lost any faith Caron. Just not a good night at the office.

Frustrating loss. Agree that much of the game they spend too much time passing to set up the perfect goal when they need to just take the F$&@ing shot! To win a title, we need to buzz like in the Merrimack game. That was us at our best but tonight Willander got sloppy on the winning goal and needed to get control of that puck. I still think we can win with Caron but only if we play our best. He’s unlikely to steal one.

That should have been a 3-1 game.

I'd say more 2-1, NU gave BU one, BU gave NU 1, and honestly the bad call gave NU one. Gotta get that kill though.

The killer instinct they showed against MC was not there last night. Should have kept it simpler when they were dominating posession and putting more pucks on net. 36 sog but didnt feel like many high danger chances. Caron struggled. Whitehead was very solid.

This BU tean is still a good team. Very good. But they have some work / learning to do if they want to go very far this season.

Jay was right that BU outplayed NU all three periods. True they didn't finish but you cannot give up two softies.

Time to say **** it and just play. You can’t soar if you’re trapped in your own head.

Brutal loss.

I typically view any game tied at end of regulation as... a tie, which standings and PWR-wise it virtually is. Thinking this way doesn't play at the 'pot. I would favor BU in a real OT scenario. We'll never know.

That penalty call on BU was not the deciding factor. It was a giveback for a crosscheck by BU a minute or two before that they missed.

BU lost the game by not converting the opportunities they had to get separation or to take the lead late in the 3rd. They dominated possession and shots, but that counts for nothing - and they instead let NU hang around and gain confidence.

Where they played opportunistic and structured hockey last Monday, they played tight, not-to-lose D tonight and Caron had a bad game. Officiating wasn't the problem.
