I've been following along the Damar Hamlin situation from last night. How scary was that?? The conversation about how the NFL told them to regroup for five minutes and then get back to playing and and the ensuing outrage got me thinking about when Travis got hurt. How would that have been handled today? That game was a couple of minutes old when it happened. Play stopped for a long time. Then they re-started the game. I always wondered how the players felt about that.

This was the first thing that came to my mind as well. I don't think they finish that game in 2022.
Was anyone else concerned with Peterson coming out and playing the rest of the game after he got absolutely leveled in the first couple of minutes and had to be helped off the ice? I don’t know how much they showed on the broadcast, but he almost fell multiple times when being helped off the ice by a couple of teammates and Larry. It seemed like he was out cold before being helped up. I’m all for being tough, but really have to question him returning.
Pandolfo suggested, post-game, that Peterson had gotten the wind knocked out of him and he couldn't catch his breath. Said he was fine.

In 1971 there was a similar situation to the Hamlin incident towards the end of a Bears-Lions game, but unfortunately Lions WR Chuck Hughes didn't make it. FWIW they finished the final seconds of the game shortly after Hughes was removed via ambulance. Some links provided below have more details, including the radio play-by-play. TV-wise, there was only regional coverage, but brief commentaries on the usual highlight shows. Back in those days, NFL game-day coverage wasn't like it is these days, so you got most of those details after the fact either at halftime on Monday Night Football (via Howard Cosell) or later in the week on "This Week in the NFL" with Pat Summerall and Tom Brookshier. Clips of those two shows are immediately below here, and long form coverage is at the bottom, and probably is the most compelling of the bunch.

As a result of the editing of the highlights (roughly 3:00 in on the GOTW clip above), a vicious hit by Bears' MLB Dick Butkus on Lions' WR Charlie Sanders two plays before the Hughes collapse was mistakenly believed by many viewers to have been the incident that claimed Hughes' life (and if you see the hit, you can see why). Butkus would draw hate mail in the pre-Internet days for years because of this misunderstanding, which was particularly sad because it was Butkus who first noticed Hughes had collapsed on his way back to the Lions' huddle, and frantically called to the sidelines for the medical assistance - apparently not unlike Lawrence Taylor's 1985 reaction to breaking Joe Theisman's leg live on MNF.
The Bill Masterton incident early in the expansion era is the only NHL on-ice death I can recall. Sports are a great escape hatch, but every once in awhile they give us a reminder that there are very real risks involved. Hoping and praying for Hamlin's family, that he can live a normal life after.

To the surprise of no one, Fensore earns Hockey East Defender of the Month, after 4-3-7 in five games with three GWGs. That's four straight DOTMs for BU. Hutson won for October and November. Dom took the final one last season (Feb.)

Call me un-informed but why do the World Juniors have an elaborate ceremony after a “semi” final game. Canada celebrating like they won the championship both teams on
the ice calling out all-tournament players. Winners anthem played. Kind of cool but seemed odd. Did Hutson play much during the tournament I didn’t hear his name .

I think they do all that stuff after every game, not just that round. Which is a little odd, but I'm not going to begrudge any team the chance to celebrate at a tournament like this.

I know he got called up to Nashville (I believe) for a few games but I don't think he's with the big club these days.

Hutson played in every game and had 1 goal and 3 assists. He played about 15 minutes per game and was on the 2nd power play unit. He had the primary assist on the overtime goal in today’s 8-7 bronze medal win over Sweden.

Farrance got a couple games w Nashville after his senior year likely as an incentive for him to sign with Nashville since he would have become a free agent in August and could sign wherever he wanted like Jimmy Vesey did. This happens frequently but more so after kids finish their junior seasons. Nashville didn’t resign him after he completed his two year contract and it appears he is now not even on a two-way contract and instead on an AHL deal only.
