BU: '22-'23 Season: Sail The Boats

It appears that despite scoring 2 goals in final scrimmage today that Ryan Greene did not make the canadian junior team
Have always felt they never liked having college players supplant Canadian junior players on team

with Zabaneh scoring twice twice over the weekend do they have to find a spot for him besides being the extra forward

Did anyone else watch the game on ESPN+? They pulled in from the feed on the scoreboard to show the split screen with Joe and Michael Pereira only they had Joe's name on Michael and Michael's name on Joe. The photos they used had each in their school's gear. How do you screw that up?

- Pyrotechnics during intros? Really? Is this minor league hockey?

I saw a photo of the intros and saw the pyrotechnics. As someone who works for an insurance company, I was wondering how they got that by their safety team.

- A hockey rink without a center scoreboard is an unforgivable sin.

I've been saying that about Conte since it opened. I hate no center ice scoreboard. When I walk in an arena from the concourse, my eyes immediately go to the center to see if the score or time left. Mullins didn't have one for the longest time. Says to me that both those arenas were built for basketball. Mullins finally added one but it's just a huge monitor. There's no running time or score on it when live action is being shown. Some wasted real estate on it.

And finally, how was the TV broadcast. I heard rumblings that Bucci sounded like a BC homer. Was Colby on color or between the glass?

Colby was in the booth with Buccigross. I listened to some of the The Boston Hockey Fan Blog's podcast and he was interviewed and said he asked the Blackhawks for the night off so he could do this game. He has really done well with his broadcasting gig. I thought he sounded great. Bucci is Bucci. It was Jerry York Night so he had to fawn. Didn't bother me.

Yes. Their graphics are terrible. Constant errors. In the previous game when they put up the between period stats they actually had the SCORE wrong. In one instance they had things reversed, and in another they had a line which said Power Plays: 1/3 when the team hadn't scored a goal yet.

I have said this before...for a network that supposedly is making such a big push to show hockey (and maybe they just focus more on the NHL level), they sure do a mediocre job. Half the time they don't put up the penalty clock. I noticed on a 4 on 4 they don't put it up, as though the time doesn't matter because both teams are at even strength.

Frustrating, but it is what it is.

Would blame Uconn instead of ESPN+ for these errors

It happens every game though. It's happened at BU home games. Clearly they don't have "hockey people" working behind the scenes. Probably basketball people...because ESPN+ does EVERY game in existence...if you scroll through any given day, basically EVERY college game is available. It's "understandable," but it's frustrating and just points out again that hockey is a regional, niche sport.

The production of Hockey East games on ESPN+ is done by the home team, not ESPN. They only pick up the feed.

UConns home feed has been produced by the same guy for decades and it's notoriously bad among those who follow the program.

Also disappointing is that UConn never produces a game highlights video. For that matter, BC didn't produce one Friday either.

I was disappointed not to see the highlights as well, but watching in person for a BU fan was probably painful, the replays only double the pain.

If we really went 11-2 not counting forfeits, and then went 11-1-1 the rest of the way, for a 22-3-1, how did we lose to Pennsylvania in the ECAC quarters 7-3 in what looks like a home game? Anyone know those circumstances?
You can read David Warner's thoughts about that. He thinks BU was looking past Penn.

As for Penn, beside Coach Crocker perhaps feeling like he should have been the BU head coach, the whole team likely felt that they were disrespected when BU was given the last home ice slot over them. Based on records Penn finished 4th in the ECAC, but playoff spots and home ice were given out by the men in the smoke filled room back then.

Penn was a terrific road team that season, losing just twice in away games. At the end of the quarterfinal loss--with BU fans, myself included, sitting stunned in the WBA stands--all the Terriers skated to the Penn bench to congratulate Crocker. BU lost its final two games to finish 22-6-1 on the ice (11-17-1 in the record book) with a pair of All Americans, Steve Dolloff and Ed Walsh.

Here’s some background on the ECAC 1972-73 season. The league was originally created as a 28-team league for the express purpose of helping the Eastern Selection Committee choose the two teams to represent the East in the NCAAs. There was no league scheduling, balanced or unbalanced, all scheduling was left up to each individual school. Near the end of the season the committee selected and seeded the top eight teams for the ECAC Tournament. The NCAA agreed to allow the tournament champion to be one of the teams, but required the committee to select the second team. In 1972-873 the league was down to 17 teams, but the committee still selected and seeded the teams to be in the tournament.

BU was 11-4 at the time of the forfeits, but just 4-3 in ECAC games. They went 9-1-1 in their remaining ECAC games. Here are the final standing with forfeits and on ice:

As can be seen BU would have finished tied for second with Cornell, not eighth. Furthermore, BU played Cornell once, Harvard twice and BC three times, going 3-2-1. Penn played both Harvard and Cornell twice each, going 0-3-1. So seeding BU 4th and giving them home ice wasn’t totally arbitrary, but it still must have stung the Penn team.

That said, it might have been better for BU if the committee had seeded them eighth, as they would have traveled to Lynah for a replay of “the game that wasn’t,” since according to David Warner the BU team was looking to playing Cornell again. That would have been some game: probably a bit like when BU hosted Maine for the HE Quarterfinals in 1994.

According to Penn's 73-74 media brochure the team went 9-2-2 on the road in 72-73, all ECAC games, including a tie at Cornell and defeating BU in the quarterfinals.

Walter Brown is sold out for tonight's game vs. Harvard. I suppose it makes sense given the smaller capacity and the way the team is playing. But I assumed incorrectly that this being during break would mean that tickets would be available at game time. Should be a great atmosphere. Glad it is on ESPN2. Hopefully the team can keep the general momentum going, and reverse their Friday night curse.
