BU 2021-22: Albie's Great Adventure

Isn't he a former Maine player? And if so, why would Maine have gone after him when they needed a coach?

What do you guys think of Doug Freidman's role? What is it he is responsible for as Director of Hockey Ops? He was on the bench every game. Also, has there been any word on whether Len Q stays or will that be dependent on who the new coach is?

Capuano was still head coach of the Islanders when the Maine job was open so that wasn't an option.

So lets have some fun... prediction time. Who will the next coach be and when will they announce it?

I'm going to go with Jay Pandolfo, announced on Wednesday April 6th (which is Giving Day at BU)

No prizes for the winners other than bragging rights.

Also going with Pandolfo. Makes too much sense and I don't see any other candidates outside of Quinn that appealing.

Pandolfo's limited college experience and lack of head coaching experience is a concern. That said, it's also not fair to label him as Albie 2.0. By all accounts, he's an Xs and Os guy where Albie (as associate) was a recruiter/roster-builder. As a HC, I'd rather the former than the latter.

If Jay is hired, it'll be extremely important that he hire the right staff.

OK - when do you predict they announce?

Maybe they wait a bit to announce Pandolfo sorta like how the Bucs didn't fire Bruce Arians the day Brady unretired.

I do think an official announcement will be after the Frozen Four is completed. Haven't seen any names floated about but IF BU wanted to even take a shot at someone like Mike Hastings you'd have to wait till after the FF anyway.

I am struggling to get by Pandolfo coming to BU as an assistant from the Bruins. You can say he did it for family reasons but if he wants this job I think it's his.

Don’t let pando’s quiet demeanor fool you . He is quietly intense and he is way more than and X’s and O’s Guy. He would bring structure, culture and most importantly accountability to the program .

Someone did toss out Mike Hastings name earlier in the thread I think - being a Minnesota guy and having pretty good success where he is, I can't imagine him packing up and schlepping out to Boston area. Scanning the coaching staffs of all the frozen four teams, I highly doubt any of them will be the next BU coach. They may wait until after the Frozen Four, but if they do, I don't think it is because the next coach is currently participating in the frozen four.

I agree it will most likely be Pandolfo.

I don’t know enough about Pandolfo on the “X’s and O’s” but it sounds like he has a good reputation. I do think it’s worth noting that he won a championship with BU, two Cups with the Devils, and came pretty close to another one as an assistant with the Bruins. Some people just seem to be winners. On top of that, he obviously spent a lot of time with Parker and Lamoriello and probably picked up a thing or two (or three). … So some intangibles are in his favor.

?

Capuano even lives in bangor.
He was happy staying in the nhl as an associate coach, and maines pay would be considerably lower which Im sure was a factor.

I agree they're not going to announce till after the Frozen Four. I would imagine the NCAA wants it that way.

Maybe? But if they know who it is, why would they need to wait until after a frozen four they are not in? Unless we are still trying to figure it out / get someone?

I’m sticking with my Pandolfo and we hear tomorrow guess.

It is getting to be late in the afternoon if my guess is going to come true (at least the timing of my guess!) Hurry up BU! :-):D:D

No chance they were going to announce today during Giving Day and distract from that. At this point, I suspect we hear nothing official until at least Monday due to the Frozen Four. Perhaps Friday on the off day, but doubtful.

I'd hoped it'd be sooner - not a fan of leaving our current players and recruits hanging like this with other programs able to poach them away.

Should have announced Hastings on Monday - he just got more expensive with his second consecutive Penrose.

Capuano? You're having a laugh.
BU would never hire one of Shawn Walsh's Mainiacs. Never, ever ever.
It would send Jack Parker and company over the edge.

I would suspect that the job would be David Quinn's, if he wanted to come back. But does he want another shot at the NHL? Or return to BU for the remainder of his career.
Despite what JD wrote, Quinn's tenure with the Rangers did not ding his reputation. He took over a major rebuilding program, and extremely young team and brought them forward. The Rangers thought that at that point they wanted a more established NHL coach to take the veterans to the next level.
Quinn will get another NHL chance, if that is the direction that he wants to go. In the meantime, he can coach US National Teams and in the Olympics while collecting his hefty salary from the Rangers. He doesn't need the money, or to rush unless a return to BU is his wish.

If not Quinn, it should come down to Pandolfo, with no head coaching experience and a season at the college level, or someone else with successful head coaching experience. It will not be Rick Bennett, especially after his inglorious exit from Union.

Whomever is the choice, it will be interesting to know the process.
