BU 2021-22: Albie's Great Adventure

Last night, our college-age daughter brought a friend who was in town from Israel. Her vaccine card was in Hebrew.

The kid checking just waved her through and never took a second glance. She might just as well held up a take-out menu from Wendy's.

BU is a more talented team than NU/Harvard or BC this season but they still have so many times the let off the pedal and revert to dumb penalties or passive defense play and let teams back in games. No lead seems safe with this team and I blame that on the coach not adjusting during the game. You are up 4-1 and Harvard is being outplayed. BU takes a selfish penalty and they score on the PP then another defensive breakdown and its instantly a 1 goal game. Sit players who take dumb penalties and don't play run and gun when you are up 3 goals. I noticed that several coaches didn't wear masks including Jerry York - the mask rules are a joke anyways. In terms of the crowd - the NU fans are loud but are trashy...I don't mind the usual stuff but their crowd is in the dumpster.

I think there was no doubt that this team had the talent (when all or most players were available to be in the lineup). There is also no doubt that we are playing the best of all the Beanpot schools right now (and arguably of all HE schools). This is our tournament to lose. The NU backup goalie was absolutely amazing last night. If he plays like that next Monday, we will have our hands full. Advantage to them in net, but probably our advantage in other areas.

I agree that we are not playing the best we can with big leads. The penalty last night was stupid, but to be fair I think it should have been matching. The guy ripped the helmet right off his head just prior. But no excuse, can’t do that in a tournament game. Really any game right now as we are already playing playoff hockey to try to get a qualifying PWR.

Let me just take another minute to recognize Logan Cockerill. He was a madman again and set the tone with the first goal (doing his best Shawn McEachern imitation!) His speed and energy just may carry us to where we want to go this year. If he does, he will go down as one of the best captains of all time.

This is so fun to watch right now! Let’s keep it up and return the Pot to the right side of Comm Ave!

Random thoughts/responses:

Definitely should've been a matching penalty last night.

The Jesuits are fine with things as long as the donations keep coming in.

Our flow out of the d-zone and into center ice looks improved.

We're on somewhat of an equal footing with NU; probably half a notch below if we played 10 games.

We need to clean up our crease protection (last night a few too many issues and it cost us a couple goals against our cousin Vinnie); NU is going to play grittier than anyone we played the last dozen or so games.

- The Peterson penalty was a benchable offense (not saying he should be benched, but wouldn't argue if Albie decided to). Yes, should have been a match, but he waited too long to hit the guy back. All was calm, then he gave the guy a shove too high. Refs are going to call something that disturbs the peace like that. If he does in in the heat of the moment while things are still a little crazy, I think they both go. And he could clearly tell the refs had not called the first penalty. On a side note, his great hit created the turnover that led to Cockerill's goal.
- Cockerill has found the gear he had briefly last season. Love to see it. Not sure I would put him up with the Mike Sullivan's of Terrier captains past, but I'm glad for him that things have turned around.
- I loved the tenacious, physical forecheck. I think that is the biggest game-plan change that I have noticed. They have the skill and speed to cause chaos in the offensive zone and still get back if the opponent still breaks it out.
- The balanced scoring among the forwards is the key to success. One night it is Skoog getting the goals. The next night Mastro. Then O'Brien.
- Happy for Vinnie. Not sure if we'll get another year from Commesso, but I think we are in good shape in net regardless.

I must've missed what Peterson actually did because all I saw was a normal post-whistle shove then the Harvard guy put him in a headlock and ripped his helmet off.

Love the Shawn McEachern comparison. Agreed. But let's slow our roll on the "best captain" talk. Peter Marshall, Mike Sullivan, Jacque Joubert, Matt Gilroy, etc, etc. would like to have a word.

Yes, I know. I am qualifying this with a “could be, if….” And that is a very big if. We would need to do some special things ahead. Our chances of an NCAA berth are razor thin right now. This turnaround since Thanksgiving is significant, however. He is leading big time on the ice and everything the coaches and players say in public have been positive. I’m not putting him in the company above until we win some championship(s).

What got him the penalty came after his helmet came off. A few seconds elapsed, and Peterson approached the guy and went too high with his shove/hit. If he 1) hits the guy back when the initial scrum is still happening, or 2) doesn't go high enough for the player to at least sell a hit to the facemask, then I think the ref either calls matching or nothing. Once the time had elapsed, he made it very hard for the ref to not call anything because it was in essence a one-sided restarting of the shenanigans.

It's funny because my first thought when seeing the McEachern comparison was that I envision all of his speed goals as him coming right down the middle of the ice. The Cockerill goal reminded me more of Amonte who seemed to have more lateral moves on his goals. Shawn was pure afterburners...they were both amazing to watch.

According to USCHO, BU has a 27% chance to make the tournament. Not great. Can't afford to lose a game unless we win HE Tournament. Going to be a tough one at PC tomorrow.

Excited to see Drew Commesso start in net for Team USA this morning! We could play a drinking game for every time they say Drew is the youngest player to start a game in goal at the Olympics. You’d be drunk before the first period is over.

Is Pierre on the call?
