BU 2021-22: Albie's Great Adventure

Chris Bourque is retiring from hockey. His OT goal to win the Beanpot was his highlight on Comm Ave.

When mookie hunks of the kid, it is him playing the point on the pp fir jackpa vs uhn in the hea playoffs at the garden and breaking his stick at the point. The kid drops it and immediately heads for the bench on the far side of the ice. A uhn’er gleefully sees the gift and takes off with it, skating in for a breakaway shortie :-(

You guys aren't the only ones. Mel Pearson's contract expired. So four historically "big" jobs are open.

Michigan
Mich State
BC
BU

The rumors were that at least Mich State and BU showed interest in Hastings. But what if Hastings got word that Michigan might also be interested? If BU was the only job left open I could understand wondering what the hell is going on but until SOMEONE reports Hastings is staying at Minn State (which i have not seen) he's likely the first domino to fall and worth waiting for IMO. Especially if Pandolfo is your 2nd choice and you know he's ok with the process.

Conversely, if Jay was chosen, don't ya think we'd have had a leak about that? It's been a full month since Albie was let go. If this is some ridiculous HR procedure, wouldn't they have announced Jay already saying effective May 1st? .

Not if the hr procedure prohibits them from doing so.

IF that's a real HR procedure it needs to be s-canned immediately.

I don't think this is a procedure that can just be written off the books, nor should it. You're missing the point that all indications are they did not fire Albie and instead let his contract expire - which likely happened at midnight last night. In fact, Albie is still listed as the head coach in BU's public employee directory that likely hasn't been updated since last week.

This means they open themselves up to a potential lawsuit if they name another head coach while he's still under contract. Of course none of us are aware of the terms of Albie's contract, but I don't imagine BU would sign off on exposing themselves like this.

If the contract expiration is what happened, where BU made the mistake was in their decision to just let it expire. Most likely, they either 1) stupidly refused to pay a small buyout for one month or 2) stupidly gave him a contract that doesn't prorate the buyout within the full year cycle (ie - the buyout would be the same on May 2, 2021 and April 29, 2022.)

I agree that letting this situation linger for a month is potentially detrimental to the program, at least in the perception amongst the fanbase ...what little is left. But the HR policy itself is not the problem, it's how BU approached the situation given a reasonable administrative policy.

I figure it is a contractal gaffe and management issue as opposed to just an HR procedure... Anyways, yes he should have been fired, the AD should have immediately gone to his replacement shortlist (assuming he had one and if not the AD should be fired, too), and we should have had an excellent coach in place by the end of April. This whole episode looks really clown show. The program is being mismanaged and is eroding slightly more each day this goes on from the fan perspective but more importantly from the junior/high school player, junior/high school coach, and the alumni/booster perspectives. SMH.

What evidence is there that the program has eroded in any way over the past 3 weeks?

Michigan State fired its coach, and no replacement has been named there, either.
BC's AD has both feet out the door ... who is going to make their hire?
Michigan coach's contract has expired, and silence.
So where is the disarray?

No portal acquisitions, degradations in mindshare across the various constituencies, etc. Think how decisive and strong we'd look if this was handled differently and we had a new coach by now (even if it was Jay, though I don't think he's the guy to bring us back to glory). If you're not viewed positively, you're viewed negatively. If you're an AD, you should be constantly working your list of potential back-fills. I hope I'm wrong, but this doesn't seem to be the case here.

Do you think the decision was made to not renew Albie after our last game? I doubt it.

There's no disarray to use your word, but there's no forward progress either so comparatively we're moving backwards in contrast to most other programs.

Just because the programs you named are in similar situations, it doesn't mean we're handling our situation wisely. I wouldn't aspire to handle things like Warde Manuel at UM, lol.

From Wodon tweet today:

Hearing as early as Wednesday for announcement on Jay Pandolfo -> BU head coach
Greg Brown seems likely soon for BC head coach, too.

Wonder if they'll coordinate press conferences - like the NBA and NHL not scheduling big games at the same time.

Safe choices by both programs if true.

Mastro headed to Arizona State. So that means when BU plays them in Arizona next January he will undoubtedly score a couple against his former teammates.

I agree with JD…. Seems like a bit of an odd move. Why did he leave? Did he have that much allegiance to Albie?
