BU 2013-2014: Ready to Quinn

Re: BU 2013-2014: Ready to Quinn

As much as we all love it, how much is college hockey going to grow beyond what it is?

Hey it was only devil's advocate. :p

Honestly, with Penn St joining and getting a little more Big Ten exposure in the schools that aren't already huge in hockey, there will be some growth. There's obviously a little more of a push to show off to some new folks recently choosing FF sites like DC, Philly, Pittsburgh. Will it actually "grow" significantly? I don't think so. But "they" have to think there's some way.

Quinnipiac is not going to have any issues with resources any more than Uconn will. This is all just foolish. If anything the Q can feed most of their $$ into their best sport (hockey) and it is a stronger situation than Uconn sending all their money to bounceyball (and nags bounceyball).

I'm not even going to address the hilarious part about them "peaking". Yea gee they are good so they can't get any better... why invite them?!!?!? Let's get someone that stinks but has never peaked.

If UConn doesn't actually step up its spending in hockey, you're completely correct. However I wonder how much QU made in a typical season where they didn't sell out every game like last year. I'm sure already having UConn in womens' gave them first choice, as foolish as that may be.

Re: BU 2013-2014: Ready to Quinn

i thought then holy cross would have been the best choice. fits in with pc, mc, bc on the religious slant. would look just as good in the centrum as uconn will in the xl. worcester is a much closer drive than hartford :p . holy cross has a sports history within new england with gordie/cousy. uconn is kinda, sorta new england, but not really :D

actually.... mookie had both holy cross AND uconn added (hc to the privates, uconn to the publics) in his new 6/6 split. notre dame was the strange add that joeb needs to explain ;)

Re: BU 2013-2014: Ready to Quinn

I totally agree on that, but I guess my main point was that neither Maguire or O'Connor seem to be better or worse. I think it's a good thing to have two very good goalies.

Maguire was one of college hockey's best goaltenders down-the-stretch last year, including the HE playoffs. O'Connor was very good the first half of last year, tailed off a bit and got hurt.
Both are very good goalies, Maine game aside.
Goaltending is not an issue. Forward - and forward depth is BU's problem area.

I think HE wanted a team in Connecticut, so that it has at least one team in every New England state. And, errr, Indiana.

UConn is a much much bigger brand name than tThe Q, even though The Q has a new (still smallish) rink and is playing at a much more competitive level.

Holy Cross would have been a better pick if they wanted to make HE into Hockey Massachusetts.

UConn makes sense, but they are likely to be another UMass Amherst. I.E., it isn't a really major sport for them.

Re: BU 2013-2014: Ready to Quinn

It should be noted that UConn's prior performance in hockey comes from fielding a roster with no scholarships. The school let that program dwindle into nothing for many years and didn't pay attention to it until Hathaway left and a new president/AD came in. It remains to be seen where the program can go with a full set of scholarships, a top conference affiliation, better facilities, and coaching. They certainly did about as good as they could in hiring Cav, and have begun implementing the scholarships. We can only see from here on out.

Well this will be all for naught when UConn gets invited to the Big 10/11/12/14 next year anyways

Re: BU 2013-2014: Ready to Quinn

Hockey East brought in UConn for their overall sports brand name. It begins and ends with that. Hockey success potential was secondary. If Hockey were first we'd have Quinnipiac.

Flying to Boston Friday morning to watch the series, need to know what not to pass up while we are staying in town. Thank you in advance!

Sam Adams brewery baby! Also I'd walk around Harvard Square & Harvard Yard, check out the MFA or JFK Library, and perhaps a tour of Fenway if they're giving them. Prudential Skywalk is nice too if you want to see the whole city from up high.

Oh, and the Southie of "Good Will Hunting/The Departed" fame is long gone so don't get screwed at a tourist trap bar.

Re: BU 2013-2014: Ready to Quinn

Just saw on Twitter that Adrian Aucoin retired. Do any of you recall his first goal as a Terrier and the celebration that followed that made Parker pull him into the tunnel for a chat? It was pretty awesome.

Has anyone not noticed the very significant expansion of D1 college hockey on TV over the last 3 or 4 years? More games, on more nationally available stations and earlier in the season. That should be a pretty reliable indication that D1 College is on a material upswing in terms of fan interest, advertising and more importantly Cash-O-La! Let's face it, TV is a major influence in bringing along any quality sport.

The one place where the game fails miserably is at the NCAA Regionals where attendance is pathetic and not likely to get better soon. The tournament committee or whomever decides locations and rules of attendance, can't count their nuts twice and get the same answer. It'll be very interesting to see how the tournament does in Philly next March.

If you're going to Sam on Saturday GET. THERE. EARLY. It is absolutely mobbed on weekends, and you risk not getting into a tour for the entire day if you get there after noon.

I would say Newbury Street, Quincy Market, the North End, and Harvard Square are all cool areas to see with food/shops/bars. Fenway is cool, but there's not a lot going on there right now (though I think they may do tours of Fenway in the offseason). Of course on the more educational side you've got the freedom trail too. There are also brewery tours at Harpoon and Sam Adams. Depends what you're looking to do.

I think the Sam Adams brewery is a little overrated. I guess it's got a little more Boston feel and everything, but the Harpoon Brewery is bigger and they've got that beer hall now (and it's closer to downtown).

Hey, more time to spend at Doyle's then!

BU2K - I'm glad somebody got it. ;)

As I recall, it was a Grand Tour.

I agree the Sam tour is overrated, their monthly open houses are much better and you don't have to go through the marketing tour of the brewery. Harpoon is geographically closer to downtown, but getting there on the T is a headache. No one should ever be forced to take the Silver Line, ever.
