Re: BU 2013-14 (Part II): Crash before the Phoenix

Not sure who Bernie is, but apparently he's an idiot.

Josh Holmstrom (Lowell Captain) is 24, and won't be 25 until the fall. BU, on the other hand, does have a 25 year old on the roster - Jake Moscatel.

Additionally, the 23 yr old SO is Nick Gordon, a transfer from RIT that had to sit out a season. He has recently retired from playing after having a second surgery on his back but remains with the team.

I'm sure glad facts don't get in Bernie's way.

I heard some of the same comments. Those are more from Tom Ryan, the color analyst. I'm no BU fan, but Bernie is a great guy, esp after a few Heineken's in him.

Is he lying about the age of the Lowell players? No, so what's the big deal. It is a lame to have a 25 year old player

Just for the record, Tom Ryan's son is a 21 year old freshman on the BU hockey team.

Patronick is ok, he just got his nose out of joint because they were shatting on UML................I only hear Bernie after I get out of BC games when and if BU is still playing and he has no problem AT ALL ripping BU . He seems to me to call it they way he sees it despite his strong affection for the Terriers. It's why I said, "I like Bernie" and I would like to have a few Heinekens with him:D

Many Lowell fans get their nose out of joint when anyone suggests their team did something wrong.

That said, do they keep totals of how many times a team is offsides? It seemed like Lowell was offside every 30 seconds last night.

Bernie and Tom will praise BU effusively when their play deserves it. After all, they bleed scarlet. They will rip them when it's deserved, also. I don't think JP wanted them to sugarcoat.

On a separate note, UML has the right to recruit anyone they please, but it is comical to see a college roster with zero teenagers.

"Bernie" is Bernie Corbett, BU grad and long-time voice of the Terriers. I have known Bernie for 40 years. He is one of the best people you would ever want to meet. He's is a die-hard Terrier, but he is also one of the greatest advocates for college hockey that you will find anywhere in the country. He published a book, "The Beanpot - Forty Years of Thrills, Spills and Chills" several years ago, which was a NON-PARTISAN history of the tournament replete with many not well-known anecdotes. He is most definitely NOT an idiot - but I will give you a pass on that since you obviously didn't know who he was. There are many people that we could "trash," but Bernie is most definitely NOT one of them. He is as well respected in the college hockey community as anyone.

Honest question - what does a kid do from an academic/learning/advancing non-hockey-career perspective while playing two years of junior hockey? Keep taking classes somewhere? No academic work, just get a job? I've heard of a Pst-Graduate year, which I assume means you stay at the same prep school or whatever, and take a small number of classes? Do kids do two years of "PG" work? Or am I giving these kids too much credit, assuming that they finished their HS degree in 4 years?

I think everyone is getting a little defensive. I think his point is that when you have 25 year-olds playing against 18-20 years olds, OF COURSE they are going to be at a big advantage. Physically they are much more mature which gives them greater strength, endurance, etc. It's not "sour grapes," it's just reality. But in a subtle sense, it is pretty well known that some schools intentionally recruit a very high percentage of these "older" players (one team I can think of that wears bright yellow and blue and is located in North Andover, for example). In some respects is a way to "equalize" the talent level, since they generally do not get the recruits that the "staple" hockey schools get. I didn't hear the game on radio, but I have NEVER heard Bernie whine, so I don't think that was the intent of what he was pointing out.

Re: BU 2013-14 (Part II): Crash before the Phoenix

The unfortunate side effect of all these older players is that the only true 18 year olds are the USNDTP recruits. So even if you get a Kessel/JVR/Eichel, their impact is muted by playing against guys that are up to 7 years older than them.

Re: BU 2013-14 (Part II): Crash before the Phoenix

wait is it true that lowell doesn't have a single teenager? if so, what a joke

No, that isn't true. Lowell's team ranges from 19 to 24. (BU's ranges from 18 to 25, assuming the roster on the Hockey East site is correct.)

He was wrong about the age of Holmstrom, which is why I brought it up. If Holmstrom was 25 and he wants to make an issue out of it, I really couldn't have cared less. But if you're going to make it an issue, at least learn how to calculate the current age of a 9/89 birth date.

And they don't stick around because they're talented draft picks looking for a couple of years of development. Most teams who can't get the USNDTP players are taking players with 1-2 years of juniors after graduation, hence the 19/20 year old freshmen that are plentiful in college hockey.

Forgive my ignorance. All I knew about him at the time was he was a radio guy who miscalculated a players age.

Not to denigrate the 25 yr old Moscatel but he is a walk on from the BU club team he is a filler because of roster depletion can not be compared to the Holmstrom situation .

Re: BU 2013-14 (Part II): Crash before the Phoenix

I took in the BU-Lafayette game today. It's pretty pathetic that this team has 10 student fans. 10-2 in conference. At least 11 hockey players were supportin'.

I was there too. A good take for sure. Truth is right now the basketball team is more exciting to watch than the hockey team. The game I went to earlier this season had more student support than today, but it is a shame they can't at least fill the sections behind the nets.... It couldn't take much more than 200 kids to do that id guess.

Later on I went to the Duke game at BC... Kind of my one little basketball double header.
