I went. Had a whole section to myself for 2 periods. To quote Lost in Space from the '60s: 'oh the pain...the pain '. On to UNH !

Is anyone here surprised by this result? By my dodgy recall, isn't this about 5 or 6 in a row for Harvard over BU? I cannot recall the last time BU beat them. 1995? Now BU just needs to drop two to a much better NU team to go for the perfect 0-7. I know, I know...they've turned the corner, they tied UML and UMass this year to go with their single win in 2014.

NESN replays last weeks BU BC game instead says a lot. Talk about meaningless the NFL pre merger had a consolation game between the two first playoff round losers and they actually filled a stadium for it.

The Playoff Bowl! As I recall, the game was contested between the second place teams in the NFL's two divisions. Yes, there were only two divisions. The game was played in the Orange Bowl in Miami. Vince Lombardi's Packers played in the game one season. He said it was "a second-rate game played in a second-rate city".

Yes that's what it was called and they were 2nd place teams there was only 1 playoff game East vs West

So what happens now?

My best guess is that the team checks out for the rest of the season and finishes with 9-10 wins. Harvard has owned BU the past few years, no?

Edit: They won't win again. 8 is enough...at least for this team.

I remember watching a few of these. ;)

So what's the deal with BU?

Jack left quite a mess for Quinn. But... I am definitely shocked at the effort from BU for the majority of this season. Lots of talent coming in but is there any concern over this happening with Quinn behind the bench? Some of his quotes even made me think he checked out on this season weeks ago. Not good.

Plenty of concern out there, and I've unfortunately heard a handful of people talking about it out there. I don't think the "mess" that was left was anywhere near this big. Somehow this team that was 7-6-1 through Thanksgiving, is 1-10-2 since then against a probably "easier" schedule.

That being said, I think Quinn will be great in the long run and that the transition has had a lot more hiccups than anyone would have anticipated.

Quinn's Comments:

“Human nature won tonight,” Quinn said. “It’s human nature to play a game like this, and, you know, not go through the motions and not be ready to play.
“It’s a difficult game to play. Well, you know what? Being a Division I athlete’s hard and winning is hard. And we let human nature win out tonight.”

How these quotes sound to me:

Come on guys, winning is really hard. You really have to expect them to play like this. I mean the game just wasn't important so what are you gonna do. We'll get 'em next time, or not, it doesn't really matter right? I mean yeah they could try to win for pride or to not have a losing season, but what's the difference really. I know a lot of people just want to see the players try because they represent the program and the university, but they just weren't feeling it tonight.

BU's record this year vs teams currently ranked in the top 20 of the RPI: 5-9-2
BU's record this year vs teams not currently ranked in the top 20 of the RPI: 3-6-2

Re: BU 2013-14 (Part II): Crash before the Phoenix

At a welcome event for Quinn held a few weeks after he officially took over, he said to the audience "this is not a rebuilding situation". I think part of what he said back then was "coach-speak", trying to convince people that the present will be good and the future will be even better. However, at that point he had also never seen any of the players on-ice first-hand, plus the Priviteras and Gill were all expected to be on this season's roster.

It wasn't until last month that Quinn, in an interview w/ the Freep, acknowledged that some difficult decisions were made shortly following that event that equated to the program having to take a step back in order to take steps forward. Reading between the lines, it's quite obvious he was referring to the Priviteras and Gill leaving. Basically they lost a top-6 forward, a top-4 defenseman, an incoming forward that would've competed for a spot on the 3rd/4th lines, and didn't have replacements who could adequately fill Gill nor Alexx's roles.

I agree that there have been a couple of times this season where Quinn's comments could be interpreted in a way that doesn't evoke confidence. There was a comment before the regular-season opener vs. UMASS where he said something along the lines of "I don't know anything about them b/c I've never seen them play", plus comments last month insinuating the (lack of) talent and depth he has hinders his ability to develop the team to play the style he wants, and yesterday's "human nature won" comment.

Back in March most every BU fan I know of (myself included) was very excited by Quinn's hiring. However, there have been a couple of times of late where I fear the possibility of Quinn not making it thru his (5-year contract) and beyond. The fact that they're 1-10-3 since Red Hot Hockey leads me to think there's something amiss that is greater than what Quinn or anyone else has let on. By no means do I want a coaching change (except to replace Powers after this season with a far more capable assistant), nor do I think Parker would've done much better with this roster.

At the very least I'd like to see what Quinn can do the next 2-3 years with the influx of talent coming in. The aggressive recruiting since the start of the season is a strong indicator that he recognized the talent/depth he currently has requires a major upgrade. I expect there will be some difficult conversations between Quinn and some of the current players, potentially resulting in changes during the offseason.

Mookie actually saw the first display of motion in DQ during a game Friday vs Lowell

Some dude was slow clearing the O-zone after Lowell cleared the puck but bu intercepted just outside the blue line and was trying to reenter. The kid just went to the bench door inside the line and was therefore offsides. DQ actually over off his wall spot and walked down to stress a point. Mookie was amazed.... First time this season. Since Mookie watches the bench since the crap on the ice makes him throw up in his mouth.

Parker was skewered on this site because he criticized players by name publicly.

Quinn has been very restrained in his public comments regarding individual players. I haven't seen or heard him lambaste an individual player by name. Earlier this season, when he sat down Kurker for taking bad penalties, he concluded his remarks by saying something like "he's a good player, he'll be fine". He addressed shortcomings with Somerby and MacAfee, similarly. He's been candid, but mild, in his comments about the team in general. Very few of us know what he's saying to the team in the lockeroom, or to his assistants in private. His comments may be much harsher. Just a possibility.

The man knows talent. My guess is that it didn't take him very long to appreciate that the cupboard was bare. This is a throwaway season. Perhaps his goal is to install his system, identify the guys who are bonafide D1 players from the guys who should be playing D3, and identify who "his guys" are.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was a housecleaning of sorts this spring, though this is just speculation on my part. Just too many guys who can't play D1 hockey.
