Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

Re: Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

Tomorrow is the big day! I love that we have the first crack at the reigning national champs. You have to assume that DeFilippo gets the start due to his advantage in experience, but the goaltending situation will be something to keep a close eye on all season.

It'll be interesting to see which freshmen Whittet favors at this stage. I imagine there will be some fluctuation in this regard, per usual, but there are a couple lineup spots open right now and I'm curious to see which newcomers are given an opportunity to seize them.

No matter this weekend's outcomes, which are irrelevant in the long run, it's just good to have Brown hockey back! :)

What a way to start the season, defending national champs at The Rock. Let's make this weekend in Jersey as special as the weekend in Jersey last March. We're coming for you, Eli. Go Bruno!

Re: Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

Wasn't able to catch the game today, but as Mike Hutter said in the score update thread, the Yale announcers called it a "commanding" performance by Brown. Obviously, the first game of the season must be taken with a grain of salt, but this was a very promising result for this young team. Hopefully the confidence they gained will propel them to do something that doesn't happen often: beating Dartmouth tomorrow.

Wasn't able to catch the game today, but as Mike Hutter said in the score update thread, the Yale announcers called it a "commanding" performance by Brown.

Brown began slowly but gradually took control of the game. By the third period the Bears were physically dominating the Elis.

Outstanding game by goaltender Marco DeFelippo. Among the forwards, excellent game by Naclerio and Lappin, and solid performances by Harlow and the two freshmen, Pryzbek and Middleton. (The more I see these two young guys the more I like them. They're big, they can skate, and they possess an excellent understanding of the game.) The defense played well. Jake Goldberg and Brandon Pfeil were particularly effective picking up the slack after Dennis Robertson received a game misconduct in the second period.

Great win Bruno....impressive !!!

Re: Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

From @MarkDivver today:

Dennis Robertson is eligible to play today. He received a game misconduct for boarding in 2nd period yesterday.

Freshman Tyler Steel, 1st team all-star in BCHL last year, starts in goal today vs. Dartmouth. Coaches still deciding on rest of lineup

Brendan Whittet on yesterday's win over Yale: 'The guys played stronger as the game progressed. We were the better team in all facets.'

Whittet looking for 1st win over Bob Gaudet, his coach at Brown and mentor at Dartmouth. Bears are 0-9-1 vs. Big Green since 2009-10

The story below appeared in ecachockey.com. One would have assumed that considering that Brown was better than Yale in every facet of the game -- the Brown win was no fluke, and though Marco DeFilippo played very well, this was not the case of a goaltender stealing a win -- there would be quotes from Brendan Whittett, rather than from Keith Allain... Allain, of course, was his usual gracious self. :-)

The ECAC site usually takes game reports straight from the schools' athletic sites. So I'm assuming the Yale SID wrote that.

Allain is a character, that's for sure.

Re: Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

Good to see Marco play well. Last year he seemed to lose his confidence. Hopefully, with Coach giving him the start and his strong play his head is back in the game.

Re: Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

per @MarkDivver

Lines vs. Dartmouth:

Lorito-Naclerio-Lappin
Pryzbek-Middleton-Hathaway
Harlow-Hourihan-Lamacchia
Kramer-Juola-Prescott

Lamacchia for Jacobson is only change up front.

Defense:

Robertson-Pfeil
Goldberg-Wood
DeConcilys-Wahl

Steel in goal.

In the third period Kramer and Prescott took several shifts with Harlow and Hourihan, as Whittett shortened his bench, and Lamacchia and Juola sat.

Re: Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

BROWN 5 - DARTMOUTH 3

Brown didn't play as well as against Yale but still managed to beat a tough Dartmouth team. The 2013-2014 Bears are not only skilled but also gritty.

The officiating was as poor as it gets.

The Lorito-Naclerio-Lappin line was impressive.

Dennis Robertson, Brandon Pfeil, and Matt Wahl were terrific at defense.

Solid game by freshman goaltender Tyler Steel.

Freshmen Zack Pryzbek and Tyler Wood played like veterans. Davey Middleton made a rookie mistake on Dartmouth's first goal, but otherwise proved to be a dependable second line center and penalty killer.

Re: Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

I was pretty happy to check online just now and see we'd beaten Dartmouth, which has been among our toughest opponents ever since Gaudet left Brown. Looking forward to the first home game.

Re: Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

First impressions from the first two games - Brown has a very good first line and potential for two more solid lines with Hathaway, Hourihan, Harlow and the two freshmen, Middlleton and Pryzbek. But what's up with Jacobson and Lamacchia? How was their play? In talking to a friend of mine tonight who played for Yale years ago and was at both Brown games, he said Tyler Wood can be a great D-man.

Re: Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

Can't imagine a better start to the season than knocking off the defending national champs and beating the team that has your number (0-9-1 against Dartmouth in recent years).

I would imagine Brown will be in the top 20 this week, which could be potentially dangerous if this young team gets caught up in any hype that might ensue. Still, Whittet seems to have their heads on straight and they seem to be an impressively mature group.

Very excited for the home opener next week.

And hopefully the band actually decides to show up, though I wouldn't be surprised if they call it a weekend after the football game against Penn.

Surprised, but not upset, that Brown isn't ranked this week. I do like the illusion of flying under the radar, so the fact that we didn't quite crack the top 20 (54 votes, second team out after New Hampshire) is a bonus for me. This weekend's game against Clarkson is shaping up to be a dog fight due to the end of last year's playoff series and the fact that both teams have been hot out of the gate this year. It'd be great to get four points, but with two strong opponents coming to Meehan, I won't be surprised if we don't hit that mark.

I posted this in the Providence thread a few minutes ago, but the current RPI ratings have Brown first and Providence second in the nation. Obviously, this means nothing with such a small sample size at hand, but it really is indicative of how much each program has progressed under their respective coaches.

Leaman took a Friar team that was absolute garbage and made it one of the finest in the nation, led by its sensational sophomore goaltender and great offensive players. Whittet took a Brown team that was somehow even worse than Providence and has built a tough, gritty team that is hard to play against and that has begun to impose its will on teams at times (dating back to the Quinnipiac semi-final game last year and based on the first two games of this season). The future looks bright for college hockey in the capital city- for the first time in a long time.
