Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

In the past couple years, there have been several good prospects that both Brown and PC have been in the running for (both RI and MA kids). Yes, PC is able to recruit an entire demographic that Brown simply cannot due to AI standards, but it would seem that PC is also going for some of the same products Brown is, and not vice versa.

Brown's recruiting doesn't generally overlap with PC's.

RI is producing very few D-1 prospects. And the best ones generally leave the state looking for better competition than offered by the RI Interscholastic League. You'll find good RI-bred players mainly on D-3 rosters.

The locker rooms were redone in 2003, but if they're that appalling, then they definutely need to be replaced.

The 2003 renovation of the men's locker room wasn't well planned. A lot of space was wasted on a conference/tv room that doesn't get used. This resulted in a dressing area that's too small, and with two columns right in the middle. A dry room was added last year but with corresponding loss of equipment space. The ventilation is terrible.

PC does have Acciari from RI and Rooney is from Canton while Rufo is from Stoneham in mass...not like that isn't local!

My comment was exclusively about how RHODE ISLAND, and particularly the Interscholastic League hasn't been generating that many Division I hockey players -- and certainly not as many as in the past. If someone has proof to the contrary, I 'd like to hear it.

Alot of confusion about the games next week in Newark, USCHO shows a traditional two day tournament format with consolation and championship on Saturday. The college websites are showing just a switching of opponents with no actual "tournament". If they all go 1-1 do we all get to hoist the Cup?

Furthermore, is anyone actually going to this? Ticket packages were in the $70 range last I checked. Kind of ridiculous for teams who charge around $10 for home games, especially considering none of the four teams involved is in the immediate area (even Princeton is over an hour away).

It's not a traditional tournament format. The four games have been set for quite some time. Brown will play Yale on Friday and Dartmouth on Saturday. Both games are at 4:00pm. Princeton will play the later game both nights, against Dartmouth on Friday and against Yale on Saturday.

This is the last year of the Ivy Showcase as it currently exists. Beginning next year Princeton and Yale will play two non-Ivy teams at the Prudential Center the weekend before the regular ECAC season starts. Princeton will host this new format.

I'm going, and we expect many alumni from the New York/ New Jersey area to show up. The Brown Sports Foundation is hosting an event at the Prudential Center on Saturday from 3:45pm to 6:30pm.

What's your expectation for the crowd? It's a huge arena, so no matter what I'd imagine it'll be pretty empty.

I agree with you that the arena will probably be pretty empty. However, I think it'll be a great experience for the players and for the fans who are able to attend.

PRACTICE GAME IN CAMBRIDGE: HARVARD 4 - BROWN 3

It took the Bears a couple of periods to wake up -- literally, the Brown bus left Providence at 7:50am for the 11:00am game... The Bears had an excellent opportunity to tie the game with about 20 seconds left.

Each Brown goalie played one period. Marco DeFelippo (1st period, one fluke goal) and Tyler Steel (3rd period, no goals) were solid. Tim Ernst (2nd period, 3 goals) seemed a bit nervous, but made a few good saves.

Goals by Matt Lorito, Dennis Robertson and Zack Pryzbek.

On defense, outstanding game by Dennis Robertson. Excellent game by Jake Goldberg.

The Lorito-Naclerio-Lappin line took a while to get going, but played well in the third period.

Pleasant surprises: the play of freshman forwards Zack Pryzbek and Davey Middleton. Both are big and skilled. They look like the kind of forwards Cornell is known for. Look for Pryzbek to earn a regular spot on the power play.

The basic lines and defensive pairings are below though there were variations as the extra forward (Andy Doane) and the extra defenseman (Tyler Wood) got many shifts, including in key situations. Massimo Lamacchia (F) and Aleksi Rossi (D) were excused from the trip for personal reasons.

Matt Lorito - Mark Naclerio - Nick Lappin
Garnet Hathaway - Mark Hourihan - Kyle Kramer
Matt Harlow - Davey Middleton - Ryan Jacobson
Zack Pryzbek - Mike Juola - Joe Prescott
Extra forward: Andrew Doane

Dennis Robertson - Brandon Pfeil
Joey deConcilys - Jake Goldberg
Kyle Quick - Matt Wahl
Extra defenseman: Tyler Wood

It could be hit or miss. The problem with having the game in Newark versus in NYC is that Newark might as well be on another planet. It's 10 miles from Times Square, but it's a half hour or so through the Lincoln Tunnel. I mean, it's a better option than Brooklyn, but Newark is also not accessible by NYC subway. Meaning students and alumni or families in the NYC area (of which the Ivies are plentifully populated) would have to drive out to Newark. In a city like New York, that's going to be a tough call. Still, that it's only 10 miles and 30 minutes from a lower Manhattan might be enough of a draw to get plenty of people down there to make a weekend of it in one of the greatest cities in the world.

Nobody goes to Newark to actually go to Newark. I love Jersey!

I believe it is a 10-15 minute ride on NJ Transit from Penn Station to Newark station with a short walk to the rink.

It takes a little over 20 minutes from NYC to Newark on the PATH ($2.75 or $2.50 with a MetroCard), and then a short walk to the rink. Not a difficult trip to make at all. I'm actually making the reverse trip on Sunday morning.
