Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

Re: Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

Wow. I had him [Cam Romoff] pegged as a potential blue-chip recruit for Brown, too. Odd.

The bar is set a bit higher at Brown now...

Maybe he'll help Middlebury. The Panthers' defense was a bit on the soft side this past season. It showed especially in the NESCAC tournament semifinal against Bowdoin. The Polar Bears kept going right through the Panthers' defense.

Class of 2017 officially announced:

http://www.brownbears.com/sports/m-hockey/2013-14/releases/20130627omh7w9

Euler, you have previously commented on Steel and Kramer. Comments on the others?

I'm pretty big on Zack Pryzbeck. He's cut from the same mould as Garnett Hathaway--and I make no secret that I'm a Hathaway fan. Pryzbeck may be the sleeper in this recruiting class. He's also a very intelligent and articulate young man.

My understanding is that Tyler Wood and Aleksi Rossi have good talent. The question is whether they'll be able to compete for a spot in Brown's experienced defense as freshmen.

Both incoming netminders have the potential to become solid Division I goaltenders. I think the competition between them will help both of them.

I don't know enough about forwards Andrew Doane and Davey Middleton. I don't think either is projected as a future star, but both are expected to fit within Whittet's team-oriented system.

Re: Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

I'd heard Yann was going to be in the mix to be the backup to Tuukka Rask in Boston, but they signed Johnson instead. Kinda would've preferred an older goalie tot he 27 year old Johnson, but it's okay.

I'm disappointed Yann hasn't been able to really stick anywhere yet. I feel like if he gets a full blown shot, with the right team, he could be a serviceable goalie at the NHL level. I'm not saying he's capable of becoming the next Tim Thomas, who bounced around until he was 30-32 and then became a Vezina winner, but I think he could be a better option than Ray Emery or Dwayne Roloson. The net situation is so messed up in Philly these days that maybe he'll be able to able to break through now that Bryzgalov's albatross contract is off the cap.

To be fair to Ray Emery, he went 17-1 this year in Chicago.

But I agree with your sentiment. Yann has to be more talented than the majority of backups in the NHL. Why hasn't he solidified a spot yet? And why did the Oilers not keep him as Dubnyk's backup this past season when he looked decent in his first couple appearances?

Re: Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

From yesterday's providence Journal:

http://www.providencejournal.com/sp...ns-hathaway-doing-his-best-to-get-noticed.ece

Did any other Brown hockey players attend a NHL team development camp? Ken Schotts reported that 4 Union players got invites to such camps.

Lorito with Chicago (he was there last year as well).

Robertson with Toronto (obviously since he is drafted by them).

Great to see Hathaway at a Prospects Camp this year, he is one of those players that any team loves to have. He will probably get at least an AHL contract after his senior year, and will be working his way towards the NHL for sure.

Re: Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

From a recent interview with an American journalist:

“Brown is an unbelievable school and they have a great hockey program, but we felt that we could have a better balance between hockey and school elsewhere." (KEVIN ROY, see http://www.hockeysfuture.com/articl...ectations-in-freshman-season-at-northeastern/)

For the record:
1. BROWN: Played for the ECAC championship; a couple of goals away from making the national tournament. NORTHEASTERN: Didn't make the playoffs; terrible in every aspect of the game.
2. BROWN vs. NORTHEASTERN academics: Do I need to say anything?

Hey, he got to lose in the Beanpot! He's better off where he is.

In all seriousness, this couldn't have worked out better for Brown. It provided the team with a rallying point, as they were probably insulted by the Roys' rash decision-making and apathy towards their school and team. As we saw for Northeastern, Roy is a selfish player who camps out in the neutral zone all game, waiting for a stretch pass to set him up for a breakaway. No thank you.

Wow, this tells me that Jerry Keefe's brainwashing abilities are on par with his ability to stab people in the back.

Comments on Matt Lorito in Blackhawks prospects camp

http://sportshash.wordpress.com/tag/matthew-lorito/

Interesting that he was referred to as a scrappy player by the author. That says two things:

1. Lorito may be one of the more skillful players in college hockey, but the NHL (and even its development camps) is a different animal.
2. Whittet's guys are buying into his system, even if they're snipers and playmakers, like Lorito. That's absolutely tremendous. If you can get your skill guys to grind it out, play the body, and develop a net presence, it really sets an example for the other guys and fires them up. Well done.

These are attributes that a Kevin Roy-like player will never develop, because from day one, they are conditioned to stay away from contact.

Recruiting Matt Lorito was the best thing Jerry Keefe ever did for Brown. Watching Matt day in and day out, I'm convinced that he's one of the best players not only in the east, but in college hockey overall. He's a complete package: skill, hockey sense, courage, you name it. Just as a point of comparison, as a freshman, Matt was already where Jack MacLellan (one of Brown's best forwards in recent memory) was as a junior, and as a sophomore, he was where Jack was as a senior. And Matt has always been more willing to operate in tight spaces and engage in physical play than Jack -- no knock on Jack; Matt is just perfect for the style Brendan has imposed on the team recently.

Re: Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

As far as incoming recruits and returning players are concerned, it is never definitive until they are on campus to start the fall semester.

Actually, like any other students, varsity athletes sometimes leave even after the semester has started or before the academic year is concluded for a variety of reasons. Most of us have no problem with that as long as players behave in a responsible, ethical manner.

Re: Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

1) NCAA regionals bids 2) Mike Levin

Just want to call out yesterday's Providence Journal coverage of local college hockey. The Dunk in PVD is bidding for the NCAA regionals in 2015 and 2017, apparently, and got a nice bit of praise for the job we did in this year's regionals.

The Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence will bid for an NCAA Division I men’s hockey regional in 2015 and, probably, in 2017, according to John Gibbons, the executive director of the Rhode Island Sports Commission.

Brown University is expected to be the host school, as it was for the 2013 East Regional at the Dunk on March 30-31.

“Brown did a great job with it the last time. We are anticipating working with them again,” Gibbons said.

The same column, by Mark Divver, talks about Mike Levin and what he'll bring to the program.

I think we may have mentioned before that Divver is providing absolutely first-rate coverage of college hockey and Brown hockey in particular for the Journal. The sport (at this level) had been given short shrift by the paper in the last decade, since Dave Phillips' news career began winding down. Take a moment to email the ProJo's editorial board, thanking them for their valuable coverage of a sport that continues to grow in popularity and has long been a Rhode Island staple for youth, secondary, college and pro teams alike. And maybe also email Divver (his addy is at the bottom of the column) and thank him, as well. It's such a pleasure to read knowledgeable hockey coverage in RI!

OK. Can the 13-14 season start now?

Re: Brown Hockey 2013-2014 - Climbing to the Top of the ECAC Ladder

Bad news: sophomore defenseman Nate Widman won't return for the 2013-2014 season.
