BRING OUT YOUR DEAD (Part Whatever)

Re: BRING OUT YOUR DEAD (Part Whatever)

Unfortunately, one of the down sides of TV and internet video broadcasting is the lack of "old school" style broadcasters.

One of the greatest compliments a play-by-play announcer can get is "You paint a great picture." The greats like Harwell, Scully, Barber et al were/are able to do that effortlessly.

Today's announcers are good, but they will never rise to the level of the icons of the radio era.

Exactly, with TV there just isn't as much of a need for an announcer who can really lay out the scene for you.

I'm disappointed I wasn't alive in an era where some of these guys were in there prime. I had the chance to grow up with Herb Carneal, whom I was always fond of, calling games for the local 9 but I would've liked to been around even earlier than that.

Nigeria's President Umaru Yar'Adua

The TV era, focus on money and our fast way of life have really changed broadcasting. Imagine Vin Scully or Jack Buck auditioning for a job today. They'd be told to pick up the pace. Brennaman would be fired for having the temerity to question the team (see Steve Stone). Producers would hear that voice and Howard Cosell wouldn't stand a chance.

Per MLB Radio, former Phillies HOF P Robin Roberts

First Ernie Harwell, now Robin Roberts. Someone check on Whitey Ford and Yogi to make sure they're OK.

Also Willie Mays, Ernie Banks and Hank Aaron.

A legend is gone:(

Such a great talent. Got to see her in Jones Hall in Houston years ago, and she was astonishing. RIP, Lena.

Yet another example of someone living their life on their own terms, despite numerous obstacles in their way. A classy individual who also happened to have one of the sexiest singing voices I've ever heard. Thanks Lena - we'll miss you!

Not to mention that she was one of the finest looking women I have ever seen. Just saw Stormy Weather on TV last week-and had seen Carmen Jones a few weeks ago.

This. Really puts today's praying mantises to shame.

Agreed. Stunning woman.
I love the styles of the 30's, 40's and 50's. Lena carried them all very well.

ETA: - even in her senior years she was very well put together. We should all hope to age half as gracefully as she did

I love the styles of the 30's, 40's and 50's.

Apropos of very little, Scarlet Johanson's "dressed up" look in IM2 is evocative of those period looks, in the way that Christina Hendricks captures the 50's look in Mad Men.

There are still a few beautiful actresses out there. Well, two.

A classic beauty who also had a sense of humor. RIP Miss Horne

She was beautiful, elegant, classy, gracious, and an amazing talent. Even as a kid I was amazed by her voice.
