Brexit - Should I stay or should I go??

Re: Brexit - Should I stay or should I go??

C'mon, we've all tried really hard to forget that trainwreck of an adaptation.

I disagree moderately-to-forcefully. It captured the spirit of the book well. And I am protective of the book.

It beat the high holy f-ck outta Redford (listless) and Farrow (awful). The only thing that version had going for it was Watterson (good) and Dern (perfect).

Re: Brexit - Should I stay or should I go??

I'd like to think Boris isn't stupid or reckless enough to take the UK out of Europe via proroguing but he is both. The question then becomes what will the rest of the world do if the UK breaks the Good Friday Agreement and commits human rights violations (which it'd be doing by denying Northern Irish citizens from accessing the European Court of Human Rights). And what does the rest of Britain do if the government breaks the Constitution. The next 92 days will be an adventure.

Oh, and there's an election 1 August. In the unlikely event that the Tories lose the seat, the working majority in Parliament is effectively gone. There will be 311 Tories plus 10 DUP (321) and 322 in opposition (Labour, Lib Dems, SNP, etc). Even more excitement!

Re: Brexit - Should I stay or should I go??

Because of how UK politics work, the Tories still have a majority, 320-319. Sinn Fein hold seven seats but don't vote and the speaker and three of his deputies also don't vote. The speaker only votes in case of a tie, and automatically votes to maintain the status quo in an issue.

Now would be a hell of a time for Sinn Fein to turn up at Westminster and throw the UK government into complete chaos...

Also a fun time for a Tory to switch. If I'm Corbin I promise her anything.

More than likely any Tory that breaks ranks will become an Independent or join CHUK. The Tories are split about Brexit (as is Labour leadership) but the only thing keeping them united has been a fear of Jeremy Corbyn becoming PM. If a new election is called before the UK leave Europe (increasing in likelihood) they may wish Corbyn had won because they could end up unemployed, wondering how the Brexit Party took all their seats and why Nigel Farage is moving into No. 10.

One of the things I love most about UK politics...

<img src="https://i.ibb.co/G96vcNh/Looney-Party.png" height="300">

"Monster Raving Loony" is a legit party and gets votes (and has actually won elections)

Interesting theory of government. From today's Telegraph

As Mr Cummings told staff in No 10: "The political argument is extremely clear: The Prime Minister believes that the public are the masters, the MPs are the servants and the MPs must respect the biggest democratic vote in British history.

"Corbyn and Grieve believe that the MPs are the masters and they can cancel votes they don’t like even after they promise to respect them. Everybody will have to pick a side. And the people will see we are on their side. Remember — opinion is 50-50 on Brexit but we have a majority on the question ‘can MPs cancel votes they dislike?’"

Let's ask Mitch McConnell about canceling out votes...

I wonder if Cummings still believes what he said in 2017: People think, and by the way I think most people are right: ‘The Tory party is run by people who basically don’t care about people like me'; and that 'Tory MPs largely do not care about these poorer people. They don’t care about the NHS. And the public has kind of cottoned on to that'
