Brexit - Should I stay or should I go??

Theresa May will be the PM of Great Britain.

She locked it up when that Tory fossil went on Sky News and called her a "bloody difficult woman" and compared her to Margaret Thatcher. He thought the cameras were off and forgot he was wearing a hot mic. He meant it as an insult but it is a badge of honor.

Re: Brexit - Should I stay or should I go??

The opposition parties are already calling for early elections because they now have a Prime Minister for whom no one actually voted.

Ironically she made the same case nine years ago.

Any Brit poli sci folks here? When the ruling party changes leader does that start the clock on an election?

If so, why? After all, there is no national election in Britain -- you vote for your MP and then the leader of the majority party becomes the PM. When we change majority leaders in Congress that doesn't force a special election.

Majority leader of Congress isn't head of state. The prime minister is. I can see a difference.

But I don't know the answer to your question.

I don't think there is a set rule, but I think it has to do with confidence in the government. If as you say you have a PM who wasn't the party leader during the last election, it makes it easier for the opposition groups to oppose them with legitimacy and in general cause trouble for them. By calling an election and winning a majority with your new leader, you basically show you have the will of the people behind your leader and their choices; sort of like the GOP's argument for the SCOTUS appointment, except in this case it isn't complete asinine and pulled out of their ***. Of course, there's also the risk that you lose your majority, which is why in some cases you might wait it out until you're more sure of your chances.

They passed a new law in 2011 fixing set dates for elections. The minority is SOL

As an outsider it's always seemed to me that you have to be incompetent to lose power in the UK. You get a five-year window to call an election? Just wait for a spike in popularity, or if you're running up against the deadline pick a fight with some dumb third tier power and ride the war fever jolt.

Re: Brexit - Should I stay or should I go??

Say what you will about the Brits. They can write editorial copy.

May declared of her overwhelming victory in the parliamentary stage of the contest: “The result shows that after the referendum the Conservative party can come together.” Admittedly, they came together for an orgy of political homicide. But having devoured their weakest, the nest must now move on together to find new food sources.

This week’s grisly end came on Sunday when Tim cast criticism of Leadsom as some kind of Big Politics conspiracy. To wit: “The establishment seem to be ‘getting’ Andrea.” The what, Tim? The WHAT? I mean … We really have seen it all now. That has to be the most advanced case yet of the general mania for claiming stratification and elitism in an attempt to win an argument. To recap: the definition of the word “establishment” has now become so imbecilically elastic that even the upper reaches of the Conservative party have one. The Windsors are now literally the last entity in the land not to have an “establishment” wing forever trying to exclude “outsiders” like Prince Charles, or whoever.

For your records, outgoing home secretary Theresa May is now the social justice candidate. Today, she stated that for ordinary families, “life is much harder than many people in politics realise”. With her leadership, we can expect a “different kind of conservatism”. “We don’t just believe in individualism,” she explained, “but in society.” Well quite. We now may have detached from the EU mainframe and be heading toward distilling our drinking water from our own urine. But now, more than ever, you just know we’ll all be in it together.
