Brexit - Should I stay or should I go??

Re: Brexit - Should I stay or should I go??

Perhaps BoJo can appeal to the EU court?
Too soon?

Re: Brexit - Should I stay or should I go??

Wow. The ruling was unanimous. Lady Hale stated parliament doesn't have to be called back, because legally speaking, it never left. So parliament is still in session and can return whenever MPs want.

Brexiteers: We want control of our own laws!
Supreme Court: OK, go ahead.
Brexiteers: Not like that!

Prime Ministers have resigned for less. He won't, but they have...

I want video cameras at the next meeting between BoJo and Queen Elizabeth.

Speaker Bercow says he will be back in parliament tomorrow and any other MPs that want can join him.

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon called for BoJo to resign. Wales (not Whales) First Minister Mark Drakeford also called on BoJo to resign. The First Minister of Northern Ireland has not called for his resignation; possibly only because the position is vacant.

In a Just World this would destroy the Tories for a decade. But it sounds like if anything it is Labour that will be hurt the worst. How?!

Because Labour has chosen a leader that doesn't reflect the party as a whole which means there's a chance the other side will win even though they're led by a corrupt buffoon.

This sounds familiar.

Seriously, it's because Brexit has torn both Labour and the Tories apart. The decision to leave Europe is one of the most important decisions England has ever faced and doesn't poll along party lines. It has support and opponents in both Labour and Conservative parties. Most of Labour wants to Remain, but Corbyn and several members of leadership wanted to Leave. On the other side, the Tories are even more torn. Theresa May campaigned for Remain. Most Tories (or former Tories) want to leave Europe, but want a deal in place before leaving. Only a portion (granted, a sizable portion) don't care if there is a deal or not. The problem is what I've been saying all along: The election comes down to the votes on the left are split between Labour and the Lib Dems and the votes on the Right are united. The best chance for liberals is to have the election after 31 October with Britain still in the EU. Then the Brexit Party challenges which throws the election into chaos. The risk is you end up with a Prime Minister Nigel Farage and a parliament that makes the Tories look like the liberal party.

Re: Brexit - Should I stay or should I go??

This morning's conversation at No. 10:

BoJo: Parliament hates me.
UK Attorney General Geoffrey Cox: Don't worry, I've got this.

Geoffrey Cox said:
This parliament is dead! It has no right to sit on these green benches! Parliament is a disgrace!

BoJo: I think that went well.

--

Is it a good sign when the Attorney General says "The government acted in good faith," and parliament explodes in laughter?

So the Brits are copying us finally? That's all Emerson was asking for. We finally have a distinctive, homegrown American culture to export.

Re: Brexit - Should I stay or should I go??

BoJo really put his foot in it this time. As the rhetoric got more intense and the rancor grew, several female MPs expressed concern for their safety because the PM and his friends are provoking violence. BoJo openly mocked an MP who spoke about receiving death threats. He then said the best way to honor the memory of Jo Cox was to get on with Brexit. Bad choice, Minister. Jo Cox was the Labour MP who was shot and killed by a nutcase who supported the Tories. I still think then-Prime Minister David Cameron should have faced charges because shortly before the incident he said "The Labour Party is now a threat to our national security, economical security and your family's security."

Re: Brexit - Should I stay or should I go??

Like a vampire rising from the grave, No-Deal Brexit isn't dead yet. Former Prime Minister Sir John Major gave a speech today that laid out how it might work:

Sir John said: “My fear is that the government will seek to bypass statute law, by passing an Order of Council to suspend the Act until after 31 October. It is important to note that an Order of Council can be passed by Privy Councillors – that is government ministers – without involving Her Majesty the Queen. I should warn the prime minister that – if this route is taken – it will be in flagrant defiance of parliament and utterly disrespectful to the Supreme Court. It would be a piece of political chicanery that no one should ever forgive or forget.”

It may be that someone in BoJo's government saw this as a possibility and that's why government stopped trying to delay the Benn Act in the House of Lords until parliament was prorogued. Were BoJo to go down this route there would be no way to stop it. No Queen, no parliament, no courts. This creates a big problem for the opposition: Continue to deny a new election until after 31 October and risk BoJo doing this or issue a vote of no confidence and remove him, but be forced to hold an election before 31 October - an election the Tories will most certainly win.

How about this. Depose BoJo, run for the new election 100% against Brexit straight down the line, Lib-Dem, Labour, and all the ethnostate parties from Scotland, Ireland, Wales.

Lose the election. No-Deal Brexit occurs, the nuts celebrate, and it is now 100% Tory who have become Greater UKIP. The disaster occurs, the Tories own it, and are destroyed as a party.

Let Dump win the 2016 election to destroy the GOP.

You would be destroying the country, not just now, but for the foreseeable future. Once the UK is out of Europe, the EU is not going to let them back in. Besides, the Tories would remain in power until 2024.

Also, you aren't going to convince Labour leaders like Corbyn to change the party's position.

Re: Brexit - Should I stay or should I go??

Yeah but we've established that is unavoidable, so we might as well punish Colonel Blimp for it.

You would get unity from the Lib Dems, Greens, SNP and DUP against no-deal but Labour are still split. The party just refused to even campaign for a second referendum, much less Remain. Both the Tories and Labour will take the blame for this and in the eyes of the UK voter it will be "a pox on both their houses."

This actually works fine for Corbyn. He doesn't care what the state of the country is when he takes over, he just wants to take over. The worse the better for him. Let Boris take the EU out, issue a call of no confidence and have the elections at the height of the post-Brexit chaos. In his dreams that would sweep him into No. 10 but odds are it returns a Tory government or a hung parliament to manage the country through the worst crisis since The Blitz.

But this leads to an early exit by Scotland so it works for me. I just wonder how quickly the EU will let Scotland back into the club. The Scots do share a land border with those nasty xenophobes...

Hence my suggestion that Labour throw it completely to the Cons and let them fail.

Re: Brexit - Should I stay or should I go??

Wales and Northern Ireland don't count anymore?

The "UK" has always included Scotland -- it is "The United Kingdom of Great Britain" which is the whole island. When Scotland leaves the UK no longer exists because "Great Britain" is now divided between nations.

It's a new country, like Czechia and Slovakia. You have to call it "The United Kingdom of England, the Welsh Who Don't Count, and Ulster a.k.a. Irish West Virginia." Or something.
