Boy Stuck In Balloon

Re: Boy Stuck In Balloon

Charges to be filed:

conspiracy, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, false reporting to authorities and attempting to influence a public servant

Is "attempting to influence a public servant" bribery?

Re: Boy Stuck In Balloon

Two words: Foster care.

As a foster parent, I can tell you this family isn't even in the first division for dysfunction, but as my wife said, the whole thing will have been for the best if it gets the kids into a sane environment.

Re: Boy Stuck In Balloon

In some states they have "false reporting" laws. However, in this case, it seems like the parents are/were complete morons on a number of levels. I wonder what the cost/hour for a helicopter would be ... Maybe they should go to "the Chair" just for being on some reality TV show. :D
UND's Jet Ranger costs $800/hour for training. That's not taking into account the costs of all the extra equipment law enforcement would have or the pilots, etc...

However, I'm not sure how lucrative a career storm chasing can be...

Re: Boy Stuck In Balloon

At least 1 Denver station was working with police as far as their helicopter goes. There was an interview this morning with someone from the CO National Guard and he was asked about the cost and the response was something like "The training it provided was worth it."

From AP:

The cost for just the two military helicopters was about $14,500.

Some website has an estimate for the whole ordeal at about $100k, from police and Nat'l Guard to damaged crops where the balloon landed. Didn't catch what the website was as I was driving.

Not sure where I saw it, but didn't some college kids recently launch a weather balloon out of the atmosphere with a camera and gps transmitter on it for something like $150? The got some cool pics from it. I read on the students' website that you have to register a weather balloon with the FAA if it has a payload greater than 4 lbs, so i am guessing there may be some charges from the FAA if this is true.

I'd even go so far as to award Jockstrap custody of the kids.
Don't discount the possibility that the father is already a USCHO poster. The Reptilian Theory is mild compared to some of the stuff that gets written in the political threads. :p

I remember being told that you're supposed to call ahead if you are setting off model rockets... but I forget to whom you are supposed to do that. I was all of 13 at the time trying to get a merit badge in scouts.

edit: "scienceticians" annoy the the heck out of me... I mean, I have no problem if you take an interest and get geeked out about things... but this guy only had a high school education... how far can you get without a working knowledge of math and calculus? I'm not trying to be a snob but those classes along with chemistry and physics give you the insights on how the whole ball of wax gets put together.

Yes, you are. To launch the balloon they would have needed to let the FAA know to do it legally. Just letting something that big up with no warning to pilots in the area is VERY dangerous...
