Bowdoin 2012-2013: Do the Boys earn the respect we think they deserve?

Re: Bowdoin 2012-2013: Do the Boys earn the respect we think they deserve?

I have never gotten my head around how his name is pronounced. Aren't there some silent letters in there?

His brother Rick, however, was a three-time All-American at BU, and generally played on a line with Mike Eruzione, the famed captain of the 1980 US Olympic team. "

Rick made it out for the NESCAC championships. Terry spoke very glowingly of his brother after the final and also intimated that he wouldn't watch the selection show as he would be out with Rick.

It's pronounced Muh-HAR. The g is silent. They even make a point of this on his bio on the bowdoin athletic website. And it's appropriate that the g is silent, because there is certainly nothing meager about the job he has done with the Polar Bears this season.

I (of all people) have no business complaining about pronunciation of names, but you mean that ea is pronounced like a u and the g is silent? I can't get my head around a silent g. Clearly that name is not of English origin. Every once in a while in my teaching career I'd encounter a student with that last name, and I spent the whole semester trying to remember how to pronounce their name.

It's of Irish origin and is pronounced in a myriad of ways. The most common I have encountered in the Irish-dense NYC area is "Mahr".

Now that you bring it up, I had a student with that last name, and he told me it was pronounced Mare (as in "the old gray ...")

The next guy I had with that name had a different way of pronouncing it. Meanwhile back to hockey...good luck Polar Bears

Can't get the idea of a silent g? Ever use the words through or thought? :D

Ricky was the first of the many Clarkson killers that I have seen since 1973. I first pronounced it Mayer, until the announcer @ Clarkson say Ma Har. I went who?

Terry got win #400 in a tournament win @ the Salem St. Classic (aka the Bowdoin Invitational). Coach Parker was there as were a number of other BU Alums. Classy guy, but most of Jack's coaching tree progeny are classy guys.

Bowdoin, an automatic selection to the NCAA Tournament, won the New England Small College Athletic Conference Tournament with a 2-1 win over Williams on Sunday, March 3. The Polar Bears are making their fifth NCAA Tournament appearance overall (also in 1996, 2002, 2010 and 2011)...Bowdoin advanced with a convincing 5-2 win over UMass Darmtmouth on Wednesday. Re: Bowdoin 2012-2013: Do the Boys earn the respect we think they deserve?

Not any that I can think of that are dead center in the word, and followed by vowels.

At the risk of being called a stickler for details, the g in Meagher is not followed by a vowel:p

Re: Bowdoin 2012-2013: Do the Boys earn the respect we think they deserve?

Not immediately, but there is one after it, and the other words have no such letters

Throughout?

EDIT: Anyway, if you know anything about irish gaelic phonology, it makes total sense, as "gh", at least in the Connacht pronunciation, would in that scenario either be silent or pronounced like a "g" except that the tongue come close to the roof of the mouth without ever really touching it. (I love languages, and briefly studied gaelic informally, but the pronunciation is all I really remember).

Shut up :D

Let's not junk up their thread too much. :D They already have the disadvantage of a long trip and a late start.

I have mixed emotions about this one - Utica seems to have all the numbers running their way and they are playing at home. It looks like the easiest game of the 4 to pick, but Bowdoin has a good team. Evaluating them is difficult because of the schedule they have played. It will be interesting to see how it goes.

Re: Bowdoin 2012-2013: Do the Boys earn the respect we think they deserve?

As Tom Coughlin (hey look another silent g...ok it is more than just silent, but I digress) would say: Talk is cheap, play the game. We'll find out how Bowdoin matches up tonight at 8:30...or 9...or whenever they end up playing. I'm excited. I've never been to the Aud.

Re: Bowdoin 2012-2013: Do the Boys earn the respect we think they deserve?

The "aud" is an old dump with alot of history. I believe it was the first "suspended ceiling" ever built then MSG did the same. Locker rooms are great as they were revamped for the Utica Devils.

It was indeed the first suspended cable ceiling, even earned it Landmark status with the ASCE, one of only 200 structures in the world. Utica also built their own locker rooms when they became a tenant.

Re: Bowdoin 2012-2013: Do the Boys earn the respect we think they deserve?

Congrats on a great season...The game could have gone either way, believe me. You have a fast, and well coached and disciplined team, someone had to win. Good luck going forward !

Re: Bowdoin 2012-2013: Do the Boys earn the respect we think they deserve?

Nice article on the "Aud". Informative.
