BouncyBall 2013/2014

Re: BouncyBall 2013/2014

MSU was a combined 0-6 against the football and basketball championship game participants. I feel like that's some type of record.

Re: BouncyBall 2013/2014

Same way we bow out of the tourney every year... a long scoring drought.

I didn't think this team could have that happen to them, but same ol', same ol'.

Yeah the reffing was slanted as was the announcing - G F D is Vitale a fvcking clown at this point - but Duke made their shots in the clutch and Wisconsin didn't.

That's why Duke won the game.

Great season, but gotta get that done when you get that close.

Re: BouncyBall 2013/2014

Gurth- That wasn't Dickie V.

Exile and Jim- I am a basketball ref, and since becoming one a few years ago I've definitely eased back on my hounding of the refs. That's mainly because I've learned all the intricate rules, positioning, and all the little things that you don't know about unless you're actually a ref.

Essentially every game is the same but every game is also different. You have all your baseline fouls that you'll call no matter what, but then you have your fouls that you're going to call depending on the type of game. If both teams are passive, you'll probably call even limited contact so the game keeps its flow. If both teams come out and are very physical, now you have to decide if it was hard enough to affect the play or if there's no need for a whistle because they played through it. Some games you feel you're just there to make sure a fight doesn't break out, other games you almost have to use your calls to manipulate the game to get a set of standards down to make it flow.

What happened tonight, I don't even know. I only saw the last ten minutes but that was incredibly poor. I generally look at the waist down when a man is dribbling on the sideline, because that way you get to see any body contact for a blocking foul, or the legs if someone steps out. How a D1 official misses that from five feet away I have no idea. On the review, I also have no idea besides maybe they need a bigger monitor.

One thing to remember though, if you believe in sports karma, and I've been keeping pretty close eyes on it after the Cowboys/Packers game in the cursed NFC playoffs, Wisconsin had four points they shouldn't have had against Kentucky. One shot in the first half when a man didn't establish himself back inbounds, and then the missed shot clock violation. Tonight both those missed calls resulted in four points for Duke.

Yeah, but to be fair you also have to weigh the non-shot clock violation against the non-flagrant call, the oddly pulled-back 3 and the general sense of "what does a Wildcat actually have to do to get a foul called on him?".

The narrative that Kentucky got jobbed at the end of that game is really starting to get old quick.

Other than that, fair points all around. It seems like basketball refereeing is too complicated for the lay man. One of the reasons I find it so hard to get invested in the game, to be honest.

Re: BouncyBall 2013/2014

I'm not hounding the refs, I just do not have more than a rudimentary understanding of basketball rules so things are a bit confusing.

Edit: Although I do completely understand about fouls and game flow and such.

Re: BouncyBall 2013/2014

One of the biggest issues I believe is these guys are working too many games. The Final Four refs have done anywhere from 70 to 95 games. Essentially double what the players are doing with less luxurious travel conditions. At some point you are going to get diminishing returns, no matter how good of an official you are.

I can't blame 'em for taking games though. The guys doing games tonight are actually taking a paycut from what they normally get. The Final Four pays ~2000 for a game, but Big Ten and ACC are paying around 3500 a game. So these guys are making more doing Rutgers-Northwestern than they are the national championship.

70 to 95? Yeesh, that's a lot of games and that's pretty rough.

Pay rate doesn't surprise me, that's par for the course with high profile events. Lots of skimping on the pay rates because of the "honor". The honor is nice but that shouldn't be a reason to lowball.

Too little Frank and too much Duke refereeing.

Must be east coast bias in bball also. Coach K is right up there with Wooden as greatest coach in college bball history. To do what he has done in this period is unreal.

Of course there was the flagrant that wasn't called on Kentucky that was worth at least two points, too, along with a few other mind boggling calls. The Kentucky game had some bad calls, but they were pretty evenly spread both ways. The duke game seemed like every bad call went Duke's way, especially in the second half.

Re: BouncyBall 2013/2014

Meaning why are you complaining about Dickie V when he wasn't a party of the announcing crew?

I was unaware that you didn't have him.

I'm in St. Lucia and he was the color guy for our feed and he was diaper dandying all over the Dukies all game and it got real old as he's almost a caricature at this point.

Silver lining is that I have 2 more days in paradise to get over the sting of this loss.

My view from this ****ter has almost done the trick by itself.

Re: BouncyBall 2013/2014

The color announcer last night was one of the worst I have ever heard. He was like some east coast shock jock half drunk blurting out whatever came to him in his stupor. I got sick of him yelling at me after about two minutes.

Oh man that was awful.

You may have the absolute worst taste on Earth.
