Re: BouncyBall 2013/2014
Right, Wall Street Journal, not New York Times; that'd be why. Thanks!

That's kinda cool actually... Puts things in perspective...
I tried to not look at the seed or descriptions because it gave it away too much, so I just focused on ratings. Ended with UF, MSU, Creighton and Wichita with MSU over Wichita. Somehow had Mercer going S16 and St. Joe going E8, but the final four results might be the one I do in my actual bracket.
It's a pretty awesome tool. You'll be surprised with who you get to the Final Four.
here is a guide to help each type of fan make winning predictions.
Novice: Pick the favorites...the last 10 seasons, the average number of double-digit seeds beating favorites was six per tournament. Meanwhile, a bracket with favorites winning every game last year would have placed in the 91st percentile of entries to ESPN's contest, a company spokeswoman said.
[If you are going to make your picks based on mascots,] According to a Wall Street Journal audit last year of the animal kingdom, bears have the best NCAA tournament winning percentage of animal mascots, followed by cats, dogs and birds. Horses pull up the rear. That is good news for Baylor—not so much for Western Michigan.
Intermediate: Bet on the best player.
Double down on upsets. The secret to selecting underdogs to the Sweet 16: Make sure you scout their round-of-32 opponents, too.
Say you like 12th-seeded Harvard to upset Cincinnati in its opener. Do you really think the Crimson outsmart Michigan State in its next game? Try a No. 12 seed like North Dakota State instead. If the Bison get past Oklahoma, they would get the winner of San Diego State-New Mexico State.
Advanced: beware the slowpokes....The five slowest teams in last year's tournament were all higher seeds in their round-of-64 games, yet they all lost.
Don't ignore defense. No national champion in at least the last decade has cut down the nets in April with a deficient defense masked by an outrageous offense.
On a random tangent, can we pass some sort of law that stops people from referring to the play-in round as round 1, round 1 as round 2, etc.?
The NCAA won't do anything about that until there's at least 96 teams in the tourney. Then, it just won't have to worry about people bellyaching about what round it is.The people are using the NCAA's own terminology. You want it fixed, ***** to the NCAA.
Great story in SI.com today about how # 16 Princeton nearly beat # 1 Georgetown in 1989. Princeton was down 50-49 with 7 seconds left and a player had an "open" jumper which Mourning blocked from pretty far away to save the game.
PS A little trivia: when is the only time a # 16 seed beat a # 1 seed in the NCAA Division I basketball tournament?
Hint: the answer is NOT "never." But there is a "trick question" element ....![]()
Harvard over Stanford in Women's Bouncyball...
With Stanford's two top players out with knee injuries.
No one cares that much about women's bball.
no need to defend them. No one cares that much about women's bball.
In the first bracket I did today, I had UF, MSU, Creighton, and Louisville. MSU over Louisville for the title.
