Bottom-Feeders Bracket; Road to "FutileFour" team selection process

Re: Bottom-Feeders Bracket; Road to "FutileFour" team selection process

If I've understood this correctly, Freddie, KRACH has their ranking upside-down. So as of March 10 we've got:

1. Alabama-Huntsville
2. Sacred Heart
3. Army
4. Bentley
5. AIC
6. Alaska-Anchorage
7. Northeastern
8. Canisius
9. Bemidji State
10. RIT
11. Penn State
12. Clarkson
13. Mercyhurst
14. Harvard
15. UConn
16. Princeton
***And the Michael Bublé teams: ***
17. Michigan State
18. UMass
19. Holy Cross

Clearly the team that will be starting the "My Team Got Screwed By The Post-Season Tourneys" thread will be UMass. Eliminated from that other national tourney when they didn't qualify for their league tourney and now they find themselves on the wrong side of Michael Bublé. They appear to be picking up their puck to go home and play with ....

Re: Bottom-Feeders Bracket; Road to "FutileFour" team selection process

Colgate? Finished between Clarkson and Harvard in the ECAC, or are they not yet being watched because the last time they finished this badly in the ECAC regular season they won 2 game 3s in overtime, on the road, to advance to the ECAC Frozen Four?

Considering they just dropped out of being under consideration for that other tournament, that's why they ain't here.

W-T-F. UMass can't get into any tournament, not even a tournament for teams that suck.

HOCKEY EAST NEEDS TWO AUTO-BIDS FOR THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EDIT- There is still hope. Just need two of those teams above to be in their conference championship game, and everything is ok.

Re: Bottom-Feeders Bracket; Road to "FutileFour" team selection process

Mercyhurst could play themselves out. And State is already on the Bublé. But I have been strongly of the opinion that any team not playing in any other postseason tourney should get an auto-bid to this one.

Re: Bottom-Feeders Bracket; Road to "FutileFour" team selection process

Official FARTS (Freddie's Arbitrary Ranking of Teams that Suck), March 11.

1. Alabama-Huntsville
2. Sacred Heart (Atlantic Hockey Auto-Bid)
3. Army
4. Bentley
5. Alaska-Anchorage (WCHA Auto-bid)
6. American International
7. Northeastern (HEA Auto-bid)
8. Bemidji State
9. Clarkson
10. Canisius
11. Harvard (ECAC Auto-bid)
12. Penn State
13. RIT
14. Michigan State (CCHA Auto-bid)
15. Princeton
16. Michigan Tech
*****Teams that still have a shot*****
17. Massachusetts
18. Mercyhurst
19. Maine
20. Lake Superior
21. Vermont
22. Colgate
27. Northern Michigan

Teams on the move UP:
Clarkson ends their ECAC tournament run by being swept by Brown. Moves up from #13 to #9. Their position appears solid.
Princeton has been around the bubble all year, but being swept by Cornell brings them back in the BFB at #15...for now.
A statistical anomaly allows perennial BFB contender Michigan Tech to climb back inside the bubble at #16. Bad news for the Huskies: their SOS will take a severe hit as they face North Dakota this weekend...their position is quite vulnerable.

Teams on the move DOWN
Harvard pushes Dartmouth to 3 games in the ECAC opening round, and falls from #11 to #14, but their spot in the field is secure as the ECAC auto-bid.
RIT sweeps AIC and falls from #10 to #13. You'd think #13 would be secure, but their upcoming series with Niagara will hurt their SOS.
Mercyhurst The Laker's sweep over Army drops them out of the field, falling from #15 to #18...they probably could have benefitted by allowing that series to go to 3 games. They might be able to get back in if they can get swept by Holy Cross in Atlantic quarterfinals.
Maine really shot themselves in the foot by taking 3 of 4 points from New Hampshire last weekend, falling from #16 to #19. They have, most likely, worked their way out of the field for good, as their SOS will be destroyed vs Mass-Lowell this weekend.
Michigan State Sparty's CCHA opening round upset over Alaska drops them from #11 to #14, but their position should be secure as the CCHA auto-bid. The committee could face a quandary if the Spartan's continue their Cinderella run through the CCHA tournament and reach the conference finals, thereby eliminating them from consideration. Unlikely as this may be (they face Miami in the quarterfinals) we suggest Northern Michigan not start booking tee-times quite yet, as they could get the CCHA auto-bid by default.

Other things to consider:
U. Mass at #17, and eliminated from the HEA tournament can only sit and watch. There are several possible scenarios that could bring them back inside the bubble, but they have lost control of their destiny. The committee flatly rejects the proposals from several whiners on this board suggesting HEA should get two auto-bids; that's a dangerous precedent, and a slippery slope we're not going to step on to. If U Mass really wants to get in the field, they should move to a weaker conference.

Lake Superior, Vermont and Colgate at #20,21 and 22 appear to be out of it, but the FARTS calculator still projects there are some exceptional long-shot scenarios that could allow one or more of these teams back in. LSSU (despite the fact they're the highest ranked of this group) has the toughest path to the BFB, as their season ended with their loss to Bowling Green.

Mercyhurst @ Holy Cross in ECAC playoffs? Looks like Farts is on the fritz

I nominate UNO. They were in first place in the WCHA about a month ago. Lost 6 consecutive, 4 of them at home and are now playing on the road in the first round of the playoffs and will probably be swept.

The BFB awards/punishes teams based on their entire body of work. According to FARTS, UNO is #35...we don't see mathematical possibility they work their way into the BFB/16. If they wanted in this bad enough, they should have started sucking much sooner.

Perhaps their boys were just sick of Omaha, and wanted a chance to visit Mankato one more time before they jump to yet another league.

Being one of the said whiners, I disrespectfully disagree with the committee's flat rejection of the proposal of the several. Also, I disrespectfully disagree with the insistence of putting a space and/or a space and period between the U and the Mass.

Only one team arguably had as futile a season as UMass. That team (the Northeastern Huskies) came back from a two goal deficit in the last period of the last game the two played on the road to win.

It is of no worry though. I am confident one of the 16 will choke their spot away by making the Conference Tournament Final and UMass will get in. Once in, we will show the handful of people who care about this tournament what Futile Hockey looks like.

Re: Bottom-Feeders Bracket; Road to "FutileFour" team selection process

Tech should get a yearly Legacy bid!

Re: Bottom-Feeders Bracket; Road to "FutileFour" team selection process

NMU is not playing their way right into one of the final spots this weekend. Maybe we can get all three UP schools in?

According to the FARTS Calculator, there is ZERO mathematical way LSSU could make the cut, and the ONLY way NMU can get in would be if Michigan State advances all the way to the CCHA Championship game. I'd say they both have about as much chance to make that 'other' tournament. MTU remains the last/best hope to carry the Yooper banner into the BFB, and they're no lock.

So...Penn State wins 9 of 11 in Jan. and Feb. while UNO loses 6 straight, but our guys suck more than the Mavs? ;)

Last16 was removed from the FARTS criteria a few years back. Plus, losing to club teams and getting shut out by D-III colleges is practically an autobid.
