Re: Bottom-Feeders Bracket; Road to "FutileFour" team selection process
Official FARTS (Freddie's Arbitrary Ranking of Teams that Suck), March 11.
1. Alabama-Huntsville
2. Sacred Heart (Atlantic Hockey Auto-Bid)
3. Army
4. Bentley
5. Alaska-Anchorage (WCHA Auto-bid)
6. American International
7. Northeastern (HEA Auto-bid)
8. Bemidji State
9. Clarkson
10. Canisius
11. Harvard (ECAC Auto-bid)
12. Penn State
13. RIT
14. Michigan State (CCHA Auto-bid)
15. Princeton
16. Michigan Tech
*****Teams that still have a shot*****
17. Massachusetts
18. Mercyhurst
19. Maine
20. Lake Superior
21. Vermont
22. Colgate
27. Northern Michigan
Teams on the move UP:
Clarkson ends their ECAC tournament run by being swept by Brown. Moves up from #13 to #9. Their position appears solid.
Princeton has been around the bubble all year, but being swept by Cornell brings them back in the BFB at #15...for now.
A statistical anomaly allows perennial BFB contender Michigan Tech to climb back inside the bubble at #16. Bad news for the Huskies: their SOS will take a severe hit as they face North Dakota this weekend...their position is quite vulnerable.
Teams on the move DOWN
Harvard pushes Dartmouth to 3 games in the ECAC opening round, and falls from #11 to #14, but their spot in the field is secure as the ECAC auto-bid.
RIT sweeps AIC and falls from #10 to #13. You'd think #13 would be secure, but their upcoming series with Niagara will hurt their SOS.
Mercyhurst The Laker's sweep over Army drops them out of the field, falling from #15 to #18...they probably could have benefitted by allowing that series to go to 3 games. They might be able to get back in if they can get swept by Holy Cross in Atlantic quarterfinals.
Maine really shot themselves in the foot by taking 3 of 4 points from New Hampshire last weekend, falling from #16 to #19. They have, most likely, worked their way out of the field for good, as their SOS will be destroyed vs Mass-Lowell this weekend.
Michigan State Sparty's CCHA opening round upset over Alaska drops them from #11 to #14, but their position should be secure as the CCHA auto-bid. The committee could face a quandary if the Spartan's continue their Cinderella run through the CCHA tournament and reach the conference finals, thereby eliminating them from consideration. Unlikely as this may be (they face Miami in the quarterfinals) we suggest Northern Michigan not start booking tee-times quite yet, as they could get the CCHA auto-bid by default.
Other things to consider:
U. Mass at #17, and eliminated from the HEA tournament can only sit and watch. There are several possible scenarios that could bring them back inside the bubble, but they have lost control of their destiny. The committee flatly rejects the proposals from several whiners on this board suggesting HEA should get two auto-bids; that's a dangerous precedent, and a slippery slope we're not going to step on to. If U Mass really wants to get in the field, they should move to a weaker conference.
Lake Superior, Vermont and Colgate at #20,21 and 22 appear to be out of it, but the FARTS calculator still projects there are some exceptional long-shot scenarios that could allow one or more of these teams back in. LSSU (despite the fact they're the highest ranked of this group) has the toughest path to the BFB, as their season ended with their loss to Bowling Green.
