Bottom Feeders Bracket/Futile Four 2010

Re:Thank you for this Thread!!

Re:Thank you for this Thread!!

what a great way to kill 45 minutes waiting to file my unemployment claim!

I will make it a point not to go up to Saugus for the regional (sigh, if only the original Hockeytown in Melrose MA were still around. RIP).

Question: Does the proximity of strip joints (no, not "Gentlemen's Clubs") work for or against a site? I say it is a positive as it brings fans to the area, yet keeps them from the rink(the Holy Cross fans will be conflicted). The "Golden Banana" has re-opened after many years in nearby Peabody, and the "Squire" in Revere has the potential for gunfire.

Generally speaking, the committee has always tried to steer clear from sites that have much in the way of culture or entertainment, especially those areas that attract people on vacation. This year alone, bids were rejected from Atlantic City, Lake Placid, Myrtle Beach and Breckenridge.

Our reluctance to locate in these types of areas is two-fold:
1. People who are considering following their team to the tournament site may see the presence of other worthwhile activities in the area as actual incentive to make the trip.
2. Those who chose to vacation in the area without even knowing about our event might stumble upon it by accident.

From your description, it appears unlikely that either of these establishments do much to enhance the appeal of Saugus as a vacation spot, so #2 doesn't look to be any problem.

We are, however, concerned about issue #1. Do you suppose it is likely that someone researching a possible visit to the area might see some advertising from either of these establishments? Do they have web sites? If so, can you provide links?

Of course, if these are truly sleazy dives, featuring nasty, skanky hoes with stretch marks, needle tracks and open sores we could see them as potential partners in some cross-marketing. Perhaps they could provide intermission entertainment at the rink.

Please feel free to forward any further information you may have, and we will take it under consideration.

Re: Bottom Feeders Bracket/Futile Four 2010

I know the sites are all set, but as a late-comer to this awesome thread I am throwing out a few Alaska candidates for possible future futile fours.

The Polar Ice Arena in North Pole -- http://hometeamsonline.com/photos/hockey/ALASKAICEBREAKERS12UDEV/polar_002__smaller.jpg

(It probably is too nice of a venue inside, but it certainly is in the middle of nowhere, sitting on the frozen tundra a few miles north and east of North Pole)

The Dimond Center Ice Chalet -- http://www.dimondicechalet.com/home.htm

In 1991 the rink manager died while trying to fix a freon link and many more went to the hospital. In the mall near the rink last week a person was shot and killed. So there could be multiple dangers for teams to face. The mall itself is going through hard times and an area where gangs and drug deals are reported to occur often.

Well, see first we have a mall which implies that most people can get their business done... further that there are no bars on the stores so that means they can probably do it in relative security. Also, this is likely something the whole town would come out for. I can't imagine this is in line with the goals of the tournament as rinks were selected based on their ability to be the ideal home for a rat colony. On the other hand, towns like these usually have a thriving oxycontin network and the administrators of the Futile Four may have more than a passing interest in such activities.

Re: Bottom Feeders Bracket/Futile Four 2010

Bottom Feeder Bracketology, March 7 2010:

Here's a look at last week's brackets:

Moscow ID
1. AIC
2. Harvard
3. Niagara
4. Rob't Morris

Laurium MI
1. UConn
2. Army
3. Brown
4. Providence

Massena NY
1. Bentley
2. Bowling Green
3. Dartmouth
4. Ala-Hunts

Saugus MA
1. Holy Cross
2. Clarkson
3. Mich Tech
4. West Michigan

Here's the FARTS (Freddie's Arbitrary Ranking of Teams that Suck)
1. AIC (last week #1)
2. UConn (2)
3. Bentley (3)
4. Holy Cross (4)
5. Army (6)
6. Clarkson (7)
7. Bowling Green (8)
8. Mercyhurst (7)
9. Mich Tech (11)
10. Brown (10)
11. Canisius (12)
12. Harvard (9)
13. Air Force (13)
14. Dartmouth (14)
15. Ala-Hunts (18)
16. Niagara (17)
17. Robt Morris (15)
18. Princeton (20)
19. West Mich (21)
20. Providence (19)
21. Alaska-Anchorage (22)
22. Notre Dame (25)

Awarding automatic bids to the last place teams from each conference, and eliminating teams with losing percentages below .560, gives us the field:

1. AIC (AH auto)
2. UConn
3. Bentley
4. Holy Cross
5. Army
6. Clarkson (ECAC auto)
7. Bowling Green
8. Mich Tech (Wcha auto)
9. Brown
10. Harvard
11. Dartmouth
12. Alab-Hunts (CHA auto)
13. Niagara
14. Robt Morris
16. West Mich (CCHA auto)
17. Providence (HEA auto)
******BUBBLE)*********
15. Princeton
18. Alaska-Anchorage
19. Notre Dame

Starting with the top overall seed, place the #1 seeds in the regional that forces them to travel the furthest:
#1 AIC goes west to Moscow ID
#2 UConn heads to Laurium MI
#3 Bentley is placed in Messena NY
#4 Holy Cross to Saugus MA
***Congrats to Atlantic Hockey for a clean sweep of the top seeds!

Now place the #2 seeds so that if both the top seeds advance to the regional finals, the regional final would be 1v8, 2v7, 3v6 and 4v5
#5 Army goes to the Holy Cross regional at Saugus
#6 Clarkson goes to the Bentley regional at Messena
#7 Bowling Green goes to the UConn bracket in Laurium
#8 Mich Tech goes to the AIC bracket in Moscow

Next, place the #3 seeds to get first round matchups of 8v9, 7v10, 6v11 and 5v12, but avoiding (if possible) intra-conference matchups.
#9 Brown would play #8 Mich Tech in Moscow
#10 Harvard would play #7 BG in Laurium
#11 Dartmouth would play #6 Clarkson in Messena
#12 Alabama-Huntsville would play #5 Army in Saugus

Finish the bracket by assigning #4 seeds as 1v16, 2v15, 3v14 and 4v13:
#13 Niagara heads to Saugus to play #4 Holy Cross
#14 Robert Morris is off to Messena to play #3 Bentley
#15 Western Michigan goes up to Laurium to play #2 UConn
#16 Providence travels west to Moscow against #1 AIC

So, here's the brackets:

Moscow ID
1. AIC
2. MichTech
3. Brown
4. Providence

Laurium MI
1. UConn
2. Bowling Green
3. Harvard
4. WestMichigan

Messena NY
1. Bentley
2. Clarkson
3. Dartmouth
4. Robert Morris

Saugus MA
1. HolyCross
2. Army
3. Alab-Hunts
4. Niagara

Again, we see the potential for attendance, ecpecially in the eastern brackets. Let's swap #2 seeds between Laurium & Messena, sending Clarkson and BG in opposite directions. Altho the trip from Kzoo to Laurium is long, we don't think its long enough, plus we dont like the idea of having both RI schools in the same bracket (they might be able to save expenses by traveling together) so we'll swap Western Michigan and Providence. The only eastern team we can swap out of Saugus is Army, so well swap them with Michigan Tech.

That leave us with these brackets:

Moscow ID
1. AIC
2. Army
3. Brown
4. Western Michigan

Laurium MI
1. UConn
2. Clarkson
3. Harvard
4. Providence

Messena NY
1. Bentley
2. Bowling Green
3. Dartmouth
4. Robert Morris

Saugus MA
1. HolyCross
2. Michigan Tech
3. Alab-Hunts
4. Niagara

Princeton gets swept by Hahvahd, but Hahvahd makes the BFB and Princeton is on the outside looking in!? Eastern Bias at its finest...

:p:p:p

Re: Bottom Feeders Bracket/Futile Four 2010

Surely UConn can no long be a 1 seed after that amazing display of skill in the AHA first round game!

Re: Bottom Feeders Bracket/Futile Four 2010

I'm confused as to why Holy Cross would be placed in Saugus. They are in Massachusetts - wouldn't it be better for the committee to place them someplace further away?

Seeing as how all four teams are in southern/central New England, you don't have too much of a choice.

Re: Bottom Feeders Bracket/Futile Four 2010

Boy, Brown didn't do themselves any favors this weekend. Two years in a row they've won a playoff series. IIRC, it cost them a No. 1 seed last year. Might keep them out of the BFB all together this year.

Maybe an amendment to the rule could help fix this problem. I'm thinking that the committee requires any team that has to play within 2 states of their home state practice in China for the week leading up to the tourney games. This way they will get to experience both the joy of jet lag and eating dogs.

Re: Bottom Feeders Bracket/Futile Four 2010

this whole f'in thing is rigged. its a joke. you people can't be serious!
Tech didn't get a number one seed? who's on this so called "committee"?

Of course, if these are truly sleazy dives, featuring nasty, skanky hoes with stretch marks, needle tracks and open sores we could see them as potential partners in some cross-marketing. Perhaps they could provide intermission entertainment at the rink.

Just had an awesome thought, perhaps there might be some souvenir opportunities. I can see the t-shirt now, "I went to the 2010 Futile 4, and all I got was this lousy cold sore (I hope)"

Re: Bottom Feeders Bracket/Futile Four 2010

uh ... this tournament uses a Zamboni?

this Keystone Lake should be under consideration for a venue next year. think how fun if the games were played while the players were breaking through the ice!

Re: Bottom Feeders Bracket/Futile Four 2010

I imagine it's done on purpose, but the Eastern regional is in Massena, not Messena.

My opinion would be that all regionals (and of course the FF) would be spelled incorrectly on purpose to avoid the accidental attendee.

my guess their response to this would be WGAS.
