First game report is in from the East.
(5) Bentley vs (12) Fairbanks
Reigning NoWINs champion Fairbanks completed the longest trip of the tournament as the first team to the top of Mt Washington, finding the weather very similar to their home in Alaska at -2 with a wind chill of 36 below. UAF coach Erik Largen immediately tried to gain favor with regional referee Nimbus by bringing a dead rat, but officials reported him for yet another recruiting violation as a result. Largen was sentenced to clean the weather sensors on top of the Observatory, and has yet to be seen again.
Bentley arrived shortly after Fairbanks, having to hoof it up the last leg of the mountain when their cabs broke down. Unfortunately for the Falcons, they couldn’t carry all their gear so they were missing key pieces of equipment. Nimbus demanded that Bentley begin play at once, so the game began with Falcon players trading sticks on the fly as they changed lines. The wind picked up and blew four Fairbanks players so far off the bench that they tumbled down the mountain road, unavailable for the rest of the game.
Filip Fornaa Svensson gave the Nanooks the lead when he tripped over one of the chains holding the Observatory down, and subsequently slid all the way into the Bentley net with the puck lodged under him. The Falcons vehemently protested, but Nimbus was unmoved and licked his privates while glaring at them in a less-than-veiled threat.
With each played only able to wear one skate due to their equipment loss, Bentley resorted to playing curling style. By pushing off with their non-skate foot, the Falcon players were surprisingly effective going forward. They tied the game and it remained 1-1 after 60 minutes. At this point Nimbus was bored and declared the winner would be decided by whichever team could prove their players came from the further total distance away from Mt Washington. Fairbanks edged ahead with their numerous players from Latvia and Sweden, but the total distance was within 1500 miles until the Falcons played their ace in the hole with grad transfer Kohei Sato from Japan. Nimbus, however, recognizing him as a former UNH Wildcat, ruled him to be from Manchester and gave the extra goal to Fairbanks.
Bentley advances to the Regional Final.
