And when the NCAA pairings come out and half the 3 and 4 seeds win the 1st round the hockey world will be stunned. Or not ?
Anyone who can figure out this year should let the rest of us know.
Two weeks ago #2 BU loses 2 @ home to Maine, wins one gaame this week @MC..Now #1..amazing to me

Wasn't pretty but a win is a win is a win.

I wasn't all that displeased with how the 2009 Tourney played out when we had a flurry of #3 and #4 seeds winning...

Absolutely not. That much more intriguing

Re: Boston Universtiy 2011-2012 Part IV: Dont stop fighting til the fight is done!

didn't exactly break out of the zone vs harvard well last night.. not as bad as the umo weekend, but not fun to watch nonetheless.

Re: Boston Universtiy 2011-2012 Part IV: Dont stop fighting til the fight is done!

Anyone else see former Terrier Mike Grier at the Garden last night?

They did not play well last night. I listened to 20% of the game on radio and Tom Ryan was all over them for playing like it was an October scrimmage. They looked jumpy and had a "get me out of here!" look the last five minutes. They will have to raise their game about 5 notches if they want to beat a very good BC team. On the plus side, it was nice to see Millan brought his A game.

The last time BU went three years without a Beanpot? 83-85. The longest BU drought is 59-65.

Re: Boston Universtiy 2011-2012 Part IV: Dont stop fighting til the fight is done!

I took a look at the list of Beanpot Hall of Fame members in the program.
Here are two lists that should have some correlation:

BEANPOT CHAMPIONSHIPS

Boston University - 29
Boston College - 16
Harvard University - 10
Northeastern - 4

BEANPOT HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

Northeastern - 14
Boston University - 14
Boston College - 13
Harvard University - 10
Boston Garden - 2

The Beanpot Hall of Fame is open to players, coaches and administrators.

But how can a school that has won 4 of 59 tournaments have as many inductees as a school that has won 29?

The selection committee may want to try and even the numbers out as much as possible. But here is one more chart:

BEANPOT CHAMPIONSHIPS TO HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

Northeastern - +10
Harvard University - 0
Boston College - -3
Boston University - -15

Re: Boston Universtiy 2011-2012 Part IV: Dont stop fighting til the fight is done!

A few observations from last night's Beanpot opening round:

- Harvard does not have a student section. Where are the Harvard students? Not at the Garden!

- No way the night was a sellout, as annually announced. The four sections to the right of the Harvard band were 60 to 80 % empty the whole night.

- Is Boston College now sponsored by Gulden's mustard? What's up with those uniforms? Maybe the answer is mustard on the back of some of their hot dogs!

- Poor Northeastern. Every year they arrive loud, if not particularly proud. And the results are the always the same, and sometimes even worse like last night.

- At least there is one member of the Huskies that has experienced a Beanpot championship in his lifetime. Vinny Saponari!

- Is Bunyon the worst referee in Hockey East? Or is it Fryer? How does Bunyon ever get any high profile assignments?

- Rawlings can be great, or really bad. Last night he was pretty bad.

- Harvard and Northeastern have never met in a Beanpot final. This year was the 40th opportunity for that matchup to happen.

- BU and BC again! Bring it on!

I tell people this stat all the time. It really is remarkable. Hard to beleive that in the various periods when BU and BC have had down years (rarely at the same time), that neither Harvard or NU could pull off the upset to get in the final too.

One close call - 1989, when Harvard advanced, and BU was trailing NU by 2 goals with 6 minutes left. Mike Kelfer cut it to one goal, and Mike Sullivan banged home the rebound of a gorgeous Shawn McEachern (freshman year) rush for a SH goal in the last 3 minutes (first SHG of the year for the team). Then Chris Lappin scored his second career goal on OT to send the Huskies to the exits. Harvard wound up beating BU 9-6 in a game with wild swings of momentum, along with the National Championship.

-For the first time they announced only 16,000--it has not been a sell-out in 3 years
Maybe a chance to actually sell out next Monday

I see that the attendance is now listed at 16,005. Which I still think is generous, maybe by about 2K.
I checked the box score online during the second game, and the Hockey East website originally had it listed at 17,900.

I still find it incredible how few Harvard students, or even alumni, were there.
It may be blasphemous to even whisper it, but maybe Harvard should consider withdrawing. Since they don't compete, don't show up and don't seem to care.
I'm only half kidding, but -- What would Bentley do to get invited to the Beanpot? They'd show up with a lot more fans than Harvard (even if they were new fans), and they couldn't do any worse on the ice than Harvard has for the past 15 years.
At least Northeastern fans show up in strong numbers, and care about the event.

I know I'm not "from here" so I can't appreciate the Beanpot history like some locals that grew up going to the event but I've thought of it before as well.

As I said in the Beanpot thread, the Harvard "student section" when they made the finals in 2008 was comprised of a couple of BU & NU students -it's just sad.

No, that cheering section was awesome.

Seriously, though, there are a good number of alumni who go to the beanpot. I see Harvard fans there. It's just a disconnect with the student base. Why? Ask them, I guess. Was there ever a Harvard student turnout?

By me calling it sad, it was sad that the team was in the Beanpot championship & no students showed up.

For several years now, there have been as many persons in the Harvard bench area as there are Harvard fans in the stands.

The tournament hasn't been a tough ticket for a while now. The answer is obvious. It's become a BU - BC playpen. Harvard and NU have become uncompetitive in the Beanpot. BU - BC play 3 times a season in HE play. Where's the appeal?

Re: Boston Universtiy 2011-2012 Part IV: Dont stop fighting til the fight is done!

There's no doubt that the Beanpot has lost relevance. To what degree could be argued for days. I think that it became largely irrelevant when BU seemed to win it every year in the late 90s and early 2000s and you added in to the fact that BC was the better team a lot of those years and went on to bigger and better things most of the time while BU did not (yes i know "no BP team has ever won a national title without winning a beanpot, durrrrrrr."). The fact that BU lost some of that stranglehold to just one program (BC) over the last couple of years has not helped it regain relevance either. Tradition, history... oh the Beanpot has it. But it is not really relevant anymore.

The solution lies in an old PN blog, replace Harvard or NU with the UMass Boston Beacons!

BU and BC have for the most part seperated the gap between them and HU/NU (even moreso in terms of Beanpot play). When / if Harvard and NU step up and win a couple of these things then it will become more relevant again. In the late 80's / early 90's I think all 4 teams won it within a 6 or 7 year span... which made it more exciting.
