Not enough 21 year old western canadians coming in for ronnie

For those interested, the NUHB did a season preview of BU over the weekend. We attempted to post it Saturday but I guess it didn't go through.

Rogie, nice Q and A with Somerby. Enjoyed reading that.

Nice write up, pretty good summary of what went wrong for us last year. I'd add to it that up front we didn't get the anticipated growth from a few of our forwards, namely AJ Greer and RobB. Obviously Greer left midway through the season, but him and Robbie were supposed to be counted upon to be significant contributors offensively and both fizzled out. AJ left because supposedly he didn't think he was getting the PT he deserved, but he also didn't earn it. Robbie struggled with a few minor health issues in the beginning of the season IIRC, but never developed into a consistent offensive threat. You also have to consider that Max Letunov was slated to be a part of this offense until our admissions office decided at the absolute last minute that they wouldn't accept his Russian school credits and denied him admission, leaving Quinn virtually no time to find a replacement. Of course there was also the Roberto gambling issue and Nik Olsson was injured for the majority of the season.

So that essentially wiped five pieces of the offense off the board, tack on Grzelcyk's injury at the beginning of the season which certainly appeared to dog him for the rest of the season, and you've got a recipe for a team with a lot of talent but who couldn't get it going consistently. This turned us into a 1-2 line offensive team that relied heavily on JFK, O'Regan, Greenway, Bobo, Lane, and Ahti (who was injured himself for the second half of the year) to produce. While they did their fair share, the bottom two lines had little offensive threat whatsoever. The problem Quinn had is there was literally no one on the bench who could be subbed in when one of these forwards was hurt/had a bad game/deserved to be sat due to the above roster changes. By the end of the season I think the only healthy scratch forwards were Dillon Lawrence and Erik Udahl. There was plenty of available talent on both ends of the ice - we were able to beat QU 4-1 on their home ice without Grzelcyk, Olsson, and Hickey and with Oksanen going down in the beginning of the 3rd period, but then could barely squeak by UMass in the octofinals with those guys back in the lineup. There were too many roster changes throughout the preseason and first half of the season to develop coherence and as you noted the goaltending became murky and inconsistent down the stretch after it had been superb through January and February. Mentally, I think Maguire never really recovered from the Beanpot loss to BC. To play as well as he did and lose on a relatively low percentage shot was pretty devastating for him.

The story I heard on Letunov from a pretty darn reliable source is that it was the athlete who dropped the ball after being given very clear parameters on what needed to be done (and when). Really a shame, because he is obviously a very talented individual.

In what sense?

Lowell fans already posting schedule changes to 6pm on some Fridays due to the ASN TV contract.

Can't wait to see what Friday night BU games get bumped up to 6pm.... Thanks Bertagna.

Him, Scott Conway, and Liam Pecararo have to be the preseason hat trick finalists for this hypothetical award, unless I'm missing someone.

I wouldn't bet on Pec being in the running, he's ineligible for the first half of the year due to an academic situation.

Calling his problem "academic" makes it sound worse than it is. The whole story is really complicated, but suffice to say that Pec may have gotten some bad advice at the community college he attended in Waterloo last winter. He didn't fail anything. He apparently did not take the correct course work that would make the NC$$ giggle. The rules about that type of transfer are incredibly byzantine - and that's an understatement.

The best we can hope for is that he stays in shape and is ready to contribute in December.
