Boston University at Denver 12/29

Re: Boston University at Denver 12/29

cheapazz usa hockey only flying him home to boston?

Maybe time to spend with his family? If I recall correctly, Parker let Warsofsky or Strait miss a game after WJC to see his family because of the tourney's timing with the holidays. Maybe Grzelcyk gets his trip home earlier so he misses this game.

i believe he let them miss an exhibition game, and it was only warsofsky. far cry from an incredibly important PWR game versus another top 5 team. in addition to altitude, he'd also be fighting jet lag and time zone changes. who knows.

Yeah, the "time with family" only works if the player spends there entire break at WJC, as opposed to leaving a couple days.

Timing wise Housley waited til just after it was no longer feasible for Matt to make it. It wasn't decided until Noonish (local time) Thursday, so he couldn't get a flight til Friday which it is almost 12:01am Friday there now, so you figure 9am is the earliest you could count on a flight (which would be 10pm EST) the flight would be 11 hours to NYC. So now he is in New York City 12 hours before a game in Denver with a 3 hour flight and a 1 hour car ride ahead of him, not to mention the great night sleep he had.

If the call was made directly after the first game, instead of waiting til the next afternoon this travel schedule would have been pushed up by one day and he could have met the team 30 hours before the game and potentially had time to get acclimated to the time difference and altitude. There is no way I would play him after this travel schedule, no matter how much better he is than the 7th D on the roster.

Well, they could (and probably were) game planning on not having him for this game, in addition to the factors you mention. I'd rather have him there too, but there are two games next week that he should be back for, and well rested to boot.

Re: Boston University at Denver 12/29

Phil Housley clearly hates BU hockey and secretly did this to torpedo BU in their game at Denver. Or maybe not... I wouldn't be surprised if Mary Carmichael was somehow involved too. And one can only suspect that the BU Task Force and the people that lied to the task force subcommittee (because Colby Einstein Cohen said so) are really the ones that are pulling these strings up in the offices of USA Hockey. We all knew this conspiracy wasn't going to go away.

Re: Boston University at Denver 12/29

- Still not sure what Gryzelyk's status is with Team USA. If he isn't added for tomorrow morning's game against Russia, hopefully he can make it back in time to play in this game. But for his sake, I hope he gets added. He deserves to play after the great start he has had at BU

Deserves is a little strong considering you probably haven't seen the kid that made it ahead of him (I haven't either).

Grzelcyk sent home. I agree with Parker - this was not a very good way to handle the situation.

Can he make it to Denver in time for the game? Will Parker decide not to play him even if he could, given the altitude adjustment issues and the impact on whoever was going to fill his slot?

This is karma from the time BC played at WBA (I believe on a Sunday night) and BU had their player(s) back from the WJC where as BC did not. Anyway, I really don't think Phil Housley was too concerned with BU's upcoming game against Denver (nor should he have been concerned). That's not his charge. Sorry, Jack.

I hope he makes it back for the Denver game rendering this whole discussion moot, but ... I don't recall USA hockey dealing with a world junior roster like this since I've followed the tournament (which admittedly hasn't been that long). If this happened every year, then whatever. But I doubt it does. I completely respect that they're there to win. But to me taking that long to make a cut indicates a lack of preparation in scouting, the evaluation process, or both -- it does not indicate thoroughness to me.

Agree 100%. This is the issue that I have, though admittedly with only second-hand information.

Anyway, it's done. At least we'll have him back for the early January games.

Re: Boston University at Denver 12/29

Housely probably has more of a focus on getting Gaudreau and Grimaldi to score and beating the Canadians than the effect of his decisions on the BU PWR rankings.
This is just a small bad break to roll with and win anyways. Excellent coaching is modelling this sort of resilient response to the team instead of reacting bitterly to every slight, real or imagined.

BTW Nick, maybe it's time to remove Hohman from your all milk carton team
since the sophomore ranks tied for third in scoring in HEA along with the Senior Captain from BC.

Re: Boston University at Denver 12/29

I am personally demanding that Mike Modano and Eddie Olczyk be here in Denver, for a ceremonial puck drop with Megan and Phillips at center ice, live on TV. Dinner or no dinner - it's ridiculous not to have some of the enshrinees on hand for this game. We just need to raise, oh, say about 60 thousand dollars to charter 2 jets tomorrow morning to make it happen ..... who's in? :)

If you are looking for a truly western atmosphere, I highly recommend The Fort in Morrisson. Check out www.thefort.com.Ps - bring your wallet. Great food - great service - great atmosphere - my favorite place in the US!

Bars in Cherry Creek: Cherry Creek Grille, Second Home and North are some of the more upscale bars in the area. They each have a bar area, and also restaurant areas, and good food. The Cherry Cricket is about the only really casual bar in Cherry Creek. I think there is also now an Earl's in Cherry Creek. Campus Lounge is a divey bar on University between Cherry Creek and DU, owned by a former DU hockey player. Have fun.
