Re: Boston University 2015-16 thread part 3 - The Postseason

Well, post-mortem time. In the hindsight is always 20/20 dept: Given the fact that "(insert word here) ___ defense" has been a dominant topic, why the insistence on moving Ahti up to forward? He wanted to play defense, why not make the move halfway through the season and put him back there? He didn't exactly have a great scoring touch...

These seasons just (almost)never end positively. Didn't expect it to end this badly for this group.

Re: Boston University 2015-16 thread part 3 - The Postseason

This game and the Lowell game have made me worry about the coaching staff on a number of levels.

1) This team returned all 6 defensemen from last year's team. That means the mistakes we watched were being made by players with at least 80-85 college games under their belts (besides MaCavoy) To me, alot of that is coaching.

2) This coaching staff had the players quit on them at Lowell in a playoff game. Then, they had two full weeks to practice/regroup and the team completely quit again.
Very concerning.

3) Powerplay. (In my opinion the worst part of the coaching) I don't have the numbers, but I would bet they didn't have 5 powerplay goals in Feb/March combined. This team wasn't loaded with skill but with Grizz/MacAvoy/O'Regan/Ahti/JFK, that is inexcusable.

I miss Jack Parker....I miss Jason Tapp.... Its as clear today as it has been for most all of the past 18 years the BC and BU hockey programs are a football field apart. And that's the standard that I still judge the BU program by.

Now the years are rolling by me--
They are rockin' evenly.
I am older than I once was,
And younger than I'll be.
That's not unusual;
No, it isn't strange:
After changes upon changes
BU is more or less the same;
After changes they are more or less the same.

It's hard to disagree with any of this. Especially regarding the PP. You watch teams that move the puck and have all kinds of time and space. When you watch BU on the PP, it's sometimes hard to figure out who has the man advantage. The number of times they have just been outnumbered and lost the puck in the offensive zone with the MAN ADVANTAGE is mind-boggling. They seem to be all bunched together and there is no spacing, resulting in tons of turnovers.

I truly believe a lot of it is the way the two programs are "marketed." BC seems to value continuity, commitment to the program and high-character players (not saying that BU players don't have character, so don't anyone read that the wrong way, but I don't think it's their top priority). BU seems to create the impression that going there will be a "fast-track" to the NHL. So, in a sense, we have to decide if we want to gamble on winning with "mercenaries" whose first commitment is to their careers, or players whose first commitment is to their TEAM. When you go with the former category, you win occasionally when all the stars line up. When you go with the latter category, you win more consistently. And, yes, I am going to still bring up 2 National Championships in 37 years. Because at this rate, the program is slowly slipping from prominence as a "national" power. Legacy goes a long way, but this post-season was downright embarrassing. Period.

People, people, people.

The sky is not falling, step away from the edge.

What did everyone expect from this team going into the season?

Preseason my thoughts were:

- A good chance at a Beanpot. (Accurate)
- Likely get to the garden for Hockey East (disappointing there)
- On the bubble for NCAA (and actually were a notch above a bubble team.)

Candidly, this team is just about what I thought they would be. Take Eichel off last years team and I'm not sure we do as well as we did this year.

We seem to be moving in the right direction but the road will. It be without some potholes along the way.

I got exactly what I expected (and said so two weeks ago, for which I was roundly criticized). My posts were not advocating that this team underachieved, but rather that we are what our record indicates. My focus is to discover why and to determine how the situation can be changed.

What you said is correct and I recall those expectations being the general consensus. However, their play midseason hinted that they could accomplish more than that. It is how the team performed down the stretch which was disappointing.

That would have been your solution? Don't know if you remember or anything but Ahti wasn't exactly your shut down type defenseman.

Disappointing end to the season for sure. I'm not ready to bury the program just yet.
