1993-94 Maine. Played at #1 BU in the quarters. But there were, of course, extenuating circumstances.

I had the exact same thought. BU sweeping that series is one of my "unsung" team performances since I have been following the Terriers. Where was Maine in the standings before the forfeits - second place? They dropped to 8th with the forfeits, get a judge to force HE to let them play, they brought their band to WBA, had the Ferraro brothers back from the Olympics, and we still won in two.
Maine was 17-13-4 overall on-ice the ice before losing in the Hockey East quarterfinals to BU. I seem to recall some talk that the NCAA was considering them for the tournament using their on-ice record, but in the end they were not selected. The 8 at-large teams selected were:

New Hampshire 24–11–3
UMass Lowell 24–9–5
Wisconsin 25–14–1
Lake Superior 23–14–4
W. Michigan 24–12–3
Northeastern 19–12–7
Rensselaer 21–10–4
Michigan State 23–12–5

Maine's on-ice record in league play would have had them finish in 3rd, ahead of both New Hampshire and Northeastern, both which made the NCAA tournament.
Code:
BU 19-4-1 39
UML 12-6-6 30
ME 12-8-4 28
UNH 11-11-2 24
NU 9-9-6 24
BC 7-12-5 19
MC 6-16-2 14
PC 6-16-2 14
However, in that scenario UNH would have hosted NU in the quarterfinals with only one advancing to the the semifinals while Maine would have hosted BC in the quarterfinals. If Maine had advanced to the semifinals it is likely that they would have been selected for the NCAA tournament over the UNH-NU loser.

BTW, Providence profited the most from the forfeits as they moved up in the standing from what would have been an 8th place finish (Merrimack won the season series 3-1) to a 5th place finish.
