Re: Boston University 2012-13 Season Thread -- Part II

We got the joke yesterday :D

(If you feel the need to explain it after the fact, it probably wasn't a very good one to start with ;). Or the delivery leaves a bit to be desired)

Sorry, just wanted to be consistent with the strange, baseless and repetitive smearing of Ms Mary.

Re: Boston University 2012-13 Season Thread -- Part II

Hopefully Jack Eichel is watching all of this closely...

;)
If what looks like will evidently happen (team continues to tank the rest of the season and Parker gets fired/resigns) then BU can kiss half their incoming recruits goodbye and probably most of the highly rated ones. There is going to be a downturn here for a few years in recruiting (though ironically you wont notice much difference in on-ice performance) but nothing isnt gained without a little pain ( we already got that for most of the past 15 years anyway).

I dont know... as I was asking earlier.. at this point, simply with Jack being at or near retirement age wouldn't most recruits be asking the question "what happens when you leave / retire"?

Eric Gryba has been called up to Ottawa. How many players now from the 2009 National Championship team have made it to the NHL?

Wilson, Bonino, Gilroy, McCarthy, Shatty, Strait and Gryba I believe. Not sure if Cohen had cup of coffee in the pros yet.

According to BHB, Alexx will indeed not be practicing or working out with the team during this suspension.... and he is no longer listed on the roster on goterriers.com

While I don't disagree with the punishment, I'm not sure I agree with suspending him from workouts as well. Had it been me, I might have done it more like "benched for the season" but still part of the team for workouts etc....

Were those conditions set by Parker or conditions happening as a result of Alexx possibly deciding to leave the program?

i would read into it two ways... he has told parker, "eff you/it, i'm out of here" after getting suspended in which case they took him off the roster, etc. or, given it was an on ice discipline issue, maybe they don't want him being a negative impact on the remaining players...

my guess is, given he's off the roster on the website, that they are characterizing it as a suspension but he was essentially booted off the team and will not be back next year.

To me the only message this sends is that he doesn't want him to be part of the team. So he had some in-game discipline issues. So punish him by not letting him play in the games. Unless there is a problem with his attitude, removing him from practice and workouts doesn't make a lot of sense. How is he going to feel like part of the team if he comes back next year? Keeping him out of practice punishes everyone if he plays next year after missing over a month of practice with the team. You want to teach him a lesson not prevent him from being coached and continuing to learn. How about working with him 1 on 1 to figure out how to control his temper? Parker seems like a teacher that thinks the students should just get it and doesn't want to be bothered with having to teach them anything. I think all those years with great players spoiled Parker. He probably got accustomed to being able to use strategies and playing styles that most teams just can't do effectively. Then as competition increased for recruits and the talent diminished, he forgot how to coach less talented players. It's like a genius trying to explain a concept they find simple to regular people. The players don't understand what he's trying to do or just can't do it effectively and he doesn't understand why. Both sides get frustrated and what you get is Parker calling the players out for not trying and players quitting. I don't want Parker to be fired and thrown out, I want him to stop being a bad coach.

I think Terrance just locked up the "Poster of the Week" award.

Parker's calling card was always recruiting NHL ready players. You make a good point. Aside from Gilroy I can't think of too many guys he molded into pro talent. Guys like Wilson, Drury, Whitney had the skills no matter where they played hockey.

Thinking about it too... they did use "suspended" and not "benched"... so i guess that would seem to indicate off the roster for the remainder of the season.

Weather he comes back or not... who knows, up to him I guess...but based on the cavalier attitude that it seems a lot of these guys take towards coming and going, I'd guess we have seen the last of Alexx.

I think the calling card was more that he made his players NHL-ready. Not sure if that's what you mean, but very few recruited players are "NHL-ready", or that is where they would be going, not the NCAA. And by making them NHL ready, to me that means teaching them how to play two-way hockey. Many high scoring forwards at BU made it in the NHL as defensive specialists - most notably Pandolfo, Sullivan, and Grier. Other guys that weren't superstars but were good NCAA players can probably thank the defensive focus from their BU days as one factor - Yip for example.

I don't think you can assume that Drury was NHL bound. As a freshman (granted, on a NCAA championship team), he had a solid, but by no means spectacular season, with 12 goals. Then as a sophomore, he emerged as a dominating player, with i think 36 goals. I think some of the credit for this development has to go to Parker.

That said, no doubt the lack of development in players from about 1998 to present (or at least recent) has been a driver of the lack of success. Brain Collins and Brian McConnell are prime examples. Good freshmen seasons, never really developed in terms of scoring. Nick Gillis. Ken Roche. Steve Smolinsky. John Sabo. Yassin Cisse (injuries noted).

Colby Cohen did with Colorado; hasn't since trade to Boston. Zach Cohen hasn't yet.

Re: Boston University 2012-13 Season Thread -- Part II

It's really doubtful Parker had much to do with Drury's development. What happened ~ he lost that ability overnight? Drury had pro talent, like Tkachuck, Amone, etc but had trouble breaking through on a stacked team. There's not a ton of 18 year olds in the NHL so these guys need to play somewhere before they go pro, so saying they'd go straight into the NHL isn't correct. If Parker doesn't get guys who already have top talent and can self motivate the team doesn't go anywhere.

Your post was an excellent one; but I think the horse has left the barn. At one time I think most of us agreed with that sentiment...the problem is that we're no longer sure (or don't have much confidence) that he CAN stop being a bad coach any longer...

when he was suspended for two game (and goonan was suspended), were they at practice? were they told to stay away from the ice for a week?

freep?
