Re: Boston University 2012-13 Season Thread -- Part II

I had some extra time on my hands tonight with Mrs Redaxe working and the kids asleep and I started to look back online at the results over the years. Since 1997 (the previous frozen four) seems to be the benchmark of these discussions I decided to put as much as I could together and lay it out season by season so I could take a look and consider what my opinion really is.

97-98: (Could not find the overall season record) Finished 1st place reg season HEA; Won Beanpot; Qualified for NCAA (lost in 1st or 2nd round, no FF)

98-99: Record: 14-20-3; Won Beanpot; 5th HEA reg season

99-00: Record: 25-10-7; Won Beanpot; 1st HEA reg season; lost in 2nd round of NCAA (4OT game vs St Lawrence)

00-01: Record: 14-20-3; 6th HEA reg season

01-02: Record: 25-10-3; Won Beanpot; 2nd HEA reg season; Lost to Maine in both Hockey East and NCAA tourneys (Maine was NC runner up)

02-03: Record: 25-14-3; Won Beanpot; 5th (???) HEA Reg Season; lost in OT in HE championship game; Lost in NCAA 2nd round to UNH (UNH NC runner up)

03-04: Record: 12-17-9; 8th HEA reg season (this was the year we beat BC in HE quarters)

04-05: Record: 23-14-4; Won beanpot; 2nd HEA reg season; lost in NCAA to North Dakota (North Dakota was NC runner up)

05-06: Record: 26-10-4; Won beanpot; 1st place HEA reg season; Won Hockey East tourney; lost in 2nd round of NCAA to BC (grrrrr)

06-07: Record: 20-10-9; Won beanpot; 3rd place HEA reg season; Lost to MSU in NCAA (MSU was NCAA champion)

07-08: Record: 19-16-4; 2nd HEA reg season

08-09: Record: 35-6-4; Won everyting :)

09-10: Record: 18-17-3; 3rd place HEA reg season

10-11: Record: 19-12-8; 3rd place HEA reg season

11-12: Record: 23-15-1; 2nd place HEA reg season; lost to Minnesota in NCAA

Taking some emotion out of it and look at the results on paper. I'll let people take a look and discuss before I comment (and I still want some time to look at it more too).

Incoming Freshman class (as ranked by inside college hockey)

05-06: Record: 26-10-4; NR (bc #5)

Maybe I'm mixing up the years... but didn't this not ranked incoming freshman class yielded Brandon Yip, Jason Lawrence, Chris Higgins, Matt Gilroy and John McArthy?

you are correct.

What criteria do they use for these rankings? Pure talent alone? Or do they take into account some of the intangibles (character, type of teammate, likelihood of staying 3-4 years, valuing education etc).

Hell if I know.. How good a hockey player I'd suppose.

As listed those guys weren't special coming in. Yip played with Brock Bradford who was a better prospect. Higgins in the echl which has no rep. McCarthy made himself a dependable pro. Lawrence as evidenced took four yrs to score (but did big his sr yr) and matty couldn't get anyone to take him, coming here as a older fr to play D for practice :p

I can't fault the ranking that much

But they were ultimately all key contributors to one of the best college hockey teams in history. And Matty as we know won the Hobey Baker... so... did they get it right? Or get it wrong? If they base their ranking on who becomes NHL stars then maybe they got it right. If they are trying to base it on who will help their college team win, I'd say they got it way wrong.

Only yip and McCarthy were drafted, and neither high.

You realize too they ranked them before the FR yr and not after the Miami game :D

Those guys needed help too. Not like they even made the NCAA in the two years before....

That's a pretty good assessment. Didn't Lawrence play on a line with Gerbe and Kessel before BU?

Re: Boston University 2012-13 Season Thread -- Part II

Believe you're right

Eric also forgot smolinsky who was probably one of the more highly regarded guys when he signed

Smolinsky was College Hockey's equivalent to Timmy Smith, former running back for the Washington Redskins. Timmy came out of nowhere to have a great Super Bowl many years ago, but did little else, even though the Redskins basically put all their stock in him. Smolinsky picked a great tournament to light it up alongside some other star recruits (Bourque?), and BU got a commitment from him right away.

Re: Boston University 2012-13 Season Thread -- Part II

Also, I beleive Yip was injured most of his final season in junior, which led to him not getting as noticed.

I saw McCarthy at the Chowder Cup one year before he was to come to BU (along with Bourque and McGuirk). I was not impressed. The fact that he turned into an NHLer is remarkable. Smart kid who knew what his role was at BU, played it well, and even added some scoring as his time progressed.

I saw McCarthy at BU, I was still not impressed. The fact that he turned into an NHLer is beyond remarkable. Seriously, how did McCarthy make it to the NHL and Higgins, Ewing, and MacArthur didn't?

Re: Boston University 2012-13 Season Thread -- Part II

ICH wasn't around for 01-02, but a can safely add that freshman class was the consensus #1 coming in too
