Re: Boston University 2010-11 part II - The Hunt For Red November

Were only 3 voters watching BC fly around the ice in these two games?
Seriously, I expected to see a lot more support after the drubbings for BC.

I was actually surprised to see BC get up to 4th and get 3 first place votes. They've still lost 5 games.

Re: Boston University 2010-11 part II - The Hunt For Red November

Clendening, Coyle and Nieto all named to the preliminary U.S. Jr. National Team roster.

Re: Boston University 2010-11 part II - The Hunt For Red November

When are these games played? How might this impact the BU schedule?

Thanks for the info.

This is only the preliminary roster, so their are still 3 D and F cuts remaining. So we'll probably end up missing 1-2 of them for the Shillelagh and they will be done by 1/4 at the latest so I see no reason they'd miss a third game (@ UVM on 1/8).

ETA:
Hockey East on the 2011 WJ Prelim Roster:
BC: 4 players
BU: 3 players
Other 8 combined: 2 players

I haven't looked at the rosters, but I think it's safe to say it'll be at least Coyle, probably plus one. If they watched Clendening play this weekend, then it won't be him.

OK. Thanks.

I've never liked this system of plucking college players off their teams. I know it's an honor. I know it's for country. I know it's a good reflection of the programs.

I just don't think it's right that a team such as BU or BC would have to lose some of their best players for regular season games, in conference or not.

Why don't they do this in the summer like the NHL does?

their justification probably is that its over winter break and the players don't have to miss school, don't forget nearly all of them take summer classes, and they'd only miss a couple of out of conference games usually. I'm not a huge fan of it either, but it is what it is.

For any of you planning to attend the Shil-howeveryouspellit Tournament over New Year's, the BU Alumni Association is having a reception prior to the game on Saturday. It will be at the Sears Centre so you will need a game ticket to get in the building. If any of you are going, would like to attend but did not get the email, let me know and I can post the info here.

Good comments...

2 areas where you might be slightly off

Brickley will make it. He is a fav of US hockey and become a little bit of a cult guy for them in worlds U-18's last year when he knowcked out the bigv gun for etam Russia. Will take on the same role Bourque had last year but witha few added penalties.

Clendening is not a lock by any means. Has played very poorly at BU and it has not gone unnoticed. It further solitified what some had been saying. Very early developer and above avg+ vs own age, liability vs older kids. Coyle has proved the exact opposite. He will be this years Kreider on the team.
Coyle 100%
Dumoulin 100%
Brickley 90%
Clendening 30%
Oleksiak 25%
Nieto 10%
Way 10%
Samuelson 0%

Surprising that former golden boy Maxwell didnt geta sniff but of course, they took Isles, last years back up on dev team.
Maxwell did leave the program with a bad taste and we all know, that team is all that matters.

Anyone who says Clendening has struggled must've only watched the BC games. He was playing pretty dam well at both ends of the ice prior to that. Given his experience and skill set, I really can't see him not making it, especially compared to Samuelsson and Wey. I could maybe see Oleksiak because of his size, but I'd still be pretty surprised.

Speaking of struggles, Brickley... really? It seems like there are plenty of good defensive/physical forwards who also bring more on offense than Brickley (Bourque, Brown, Callahan). I don't think he'd be a terrible selection (unless he takes too many penalties), but I just think the US can do better.

My write-up on this, including my predictions for the final roster.

This is the second article I've seen identifying Coyle as a natural center (the other was by the Western Hockey Blog). Maybe this is much to do about nothing -- as Coyle's been a fine center iceman -- but I recall numerous reports before Coyle got to campus about his preference for right wing; that he could play center but was more of a wing. I don't have enough time to dig up the quotes, but does anyone else recall the same assessment? Perhaps I misread.

He had played a lot of both throughout his career, I believe. Maybe "experienced" would've been a better word than "natural," but given the dearth of centers on this team, that's where he'll be playing.

He is not a natural center. Will play wing in pros, just like he did in their development camp. oleksiak will be a 1st/2nd rounder and good addition next year. Hard to be that big so young and as mobile as he is. a little surprised they didnt let Tinordi come in, same size etc

Cleneding has been ok on offense, very soft on D side. Wouldnt be surprised if he makes it because they want to keep happy for next year. has won with them before on big stage so 30% might be a little harsh

It sticks that Fowler cant come play....

Re: Boston University 2010-11 part II - The Hunt For Red November

BTW, I just heard from someone pretty reliable that Clendening is an absolute lock.

How I felt about the BU/NU game as it progressed.

At first I was like:

Re: Boston University 2010-11 part II - The Hunt For Red November

Thankfully Coyle decided to make a play no his own rather than watch his defensemen at the blue line fumble the puck around, or else there's no chance we get a W out of that. Lots of puck watching and puck chasing, crappy neutral zone play, bleh.

Re: Boston University 2010-11 part II - The Hunt For Red November

That was a very, very fortunate outcome.

8-3-5 is better than 3-5-8.

Hopefully this squad will continue to grow.

Re: Boston University 2010-11 part II - The Hunt For Red November

It is astounding how many shots BU allows from inside the circles. That has to stop.

Who sharpened their skates? Rhett?

The BU defense sagged more than a 90 year-old Dolly Parton. STEP UP AND HIT SOMEONE!
