Re: Boston University 2009-2010 Season Thread Part the One

So I have this poster:

epicphoto.jpg

I got it from the Dean's Office earlier this year when I stopped by for something and they had one or two laying around. A few people have asked me about it and where they can get it but I have no idea what the answer is. Anyone else have this and know where one can be obtained?

Never seen it before.

That is Epic Photo. I wasn't lying when I said I had never seen it before, but I finally got to see it tonight for the first time. As far as where it can be obtained, I have no clue. They're not for sale, and I don't think athletics will just hand them out to anyone who asks.

I finished "Burn the Boats" a couple of days ago, and I just want to say how great it was. It was amazing to relive the season an get some behind the scenes info as well. Reading about the championship game definitely gave me goosebumps, and right after I got them, there was a quote from a player (Gryba, Z.Cohen maybe?) saying he gets goosebumps whenever he watches the comeback over. We are really lucky to have such a detailed retelling to always help us reflect on our memories of the 2008-09 season.

Thank you, Scott.

From John Buccigross' column:

John,

What do you think of this Gilroy kid on D?

Tip Fleming
Hong Kong

A tip of the CCM to Tip in Hong Kong for pondering Matt Gilroy while living and working in "a diverse modern metropolis steeped in unique blends of Eastern and Western traditions."

I saw Matt Gilroy up close while doing play-by-play for the Northeast Regionals of the NCAA tournament this past spring. He was the Hobey Baker-winning defenseman from the national champion Boston University Terriers, who just raised their championship banner last weekend (more on this below).

Gilroy, now 25 and with the New York Rangers, was a man among boys during the NCAA tournament. There was no doubt in my mind he could make the jump. He has good size (6-foot-1, 200 pounds) and a sense of urgency in big spots. He won't be able to take over a shift like he could in college, but he should have a confidence and fearlessness to be a solid offensive-minded defenseman. He is the patron saint of kids who aren't great skaters but are simply good, competitive and smart hockey players. Too many hockey coaches, especially in youth hockey, favor skill-less speed over smarts.

Back to BU and the raising of its championship banner. The Terriers did it during a preseason game against the under-18 U.S. national team. This was a brilliant idea and I can't see why every NHL and NBA team wouldn't consider doing this in the future.

First, you guarantee yourself a sellout for a non-regular season, full-priced game. Season-ticket holders don't have to buy a ticket to the event, but would be given an option. Throw a "I was at the banner raising" T-shirt on every seat, and you got yourself that guaranteed extra gate. Also, you don't have to worry about any kind of hangover effect that almost always plagues banner-raising/ring-ceremony season-opening games. The game doesn't count.

The Miami Heat had the most over-the-top banner-raising/ring-distributing parade in professional sports history for their 2006 opener against the Chicago Bulls. They lost the game by 42 points!

This BU idea has to be copied.

The version I saw was that shot of the players, but spread out more, all on a white background. It was, like, 6" high and 24-36" wide, so it was a wide screen shot and it was just so elegant and cool looking. Dropping that image onto that background - not so much. But I'd still like to get one. :)

I didn't see the original, so I can't really compare. I know Kristyn was pretty happy with how it turned out, though.

In defense of the Epic Photo, I don't really think any national championship team photo could live up the hype that has built around this thing over the course of the last four months.

BTW, HE Power Rankings and links to the FreeP's season preview, Shattenkirk feature and Millan feature are up on the blog.

Where exactly are the SRO seats at Agganis, and how do they work it with a Row A and Row B?

Also, started working with a new client over the summer....imagine my surprise when I learned about the organization's name.

The rows are meaningless. You find a place to stand on the concourse, and don't move if you like your spot.

Hahahahahahaha. That's Epic Photo? You constantly defended something you hadn't seen.

Nothing Epic about that. Bet Gibber has some much better BU Hockey Photos.

It's nice, but nothing epic about it.

When did I defend it? Better yet, when was it criticized enough to need to be defended? All I did was update you guys on what was going on with it, and I made it very clear all along that I had never seen it. "Epic Photo" was the nickname given to it by those who worked on its production. I didn't come up with that.

As for whether or not it's actually epic, I have also said all along that I know nothing about photography. Therefore, it wouldn't be fair for me to judge its epicness. Do you know enough about photography to pass that judgment?

Josh Gibney is a great photographer. There's no question about that. So are Melissa Wade and Dominick Reuter. But I don't think anyone ever tried comparing a then-junior photography student to any of them, so why are you?

Feel free to come down from your high horse and answer any of these questions.

The way she was acting made it seem like she thought she was as good as these people. And really, calling you out for being a ridiculous tool over the whole thing and the way you acted puts me on a high horse? Please.

"The way she was acting"? Do you even know Kristyn? Have you ever met her? Ever even seen her? I've known her for three years and never once have I seen her act pompously.

Fine, you were the go between, so you made her look bad.

Sorry Kristyn, it was Gerbe Eats Baby Food's fault!

Nothing like some good "Terrier on Terrier crime" to liven up a drab Thursday. :)

Thanks for posting the Buccigross' column FL.

I don't know when I made it seem like she was as good as any of those photographers I listed. Like I already said, I know nothing about photography. I would be the last person to even try and compare one photographer to another. I'm also not sure how I ever made Kristyn look bad. I was, as you put it, "the go between", nothing more, nothing less.

Before I end this, let me just remind you of the first two posts ever made about "Epic Portrait".

At some point next week, the FreeP will have what has been dubbed "EPIC PORTRAIT." I haven't seen it yet, but I've heard good things.

That's Kristyn's so it has to be great.

BU Hockey: A Few Pixels Short of Epic

This painted a totally different mental image in my head - I'm disappointed that it's just arguing.
