Boston University 2009-2010 Season Thread III: From the Beanpot until the end...

Re: Boston University 2009-2010 Season Thread III: From the Beanpot until the end...

I know this is going to sound really whiny, but honestly, what has been the problem with the officials this year?

I am NOT blaming the officials for our loss in the Beanpot. We hit two posts and had plenty more opportunities to put the puck in the net.

I have seen more questionable calls this season than I did all of last season and scores of NHL seasons gone by. From the perfect hip check called as a trip in the (Michigan?) game to the cross-check on Pereira last night, these refs seem to call what looks bad, not what actually is bad.

Their positioning has been pretty bad, too. Up in Lowell on 2/5, the refs were a good 10 feet off of the boards at the blue lines! Gryba had to dance around them at least twice in the game and I think 3 or 4 pucks went off of a linesman at the blue line.

I understand that the NCAA quality of officiating is not going to be the same as the NHL (because that's where the good ones are) but is this giant disconnect in officiating competency real or am I just trying to vent?

True today..
was true last yr when you played Lowell in the HE finals.. :)
will probably continue to be true in the future :)

Not at all. If he had been called up earlier/not injured, I'd have to think he'd be a legitimate Calder contender right now.

From Avs' Web-site notebook
Yip has been a revelation since making his NHL debut on Dec. 19 vs. Columbus. The very definition of a power forward – a winger who plays with grit, finishes every check and can also put the puck in the net - the Boston University product’s production has exceeded most people’s expectations.

Video of Yip's NHL goals.

Yes, I agree, the Hockey East refs are indeed clowns.

This is true :D

God d*mn that Gerbe! Slashing BC players now! :p

the cross-check on Pereira last night, these refs seem to call what looks bad, not what actually is bad.

let me guess, you listened to last nights game on the bu radio.

Yeah. There were a few questionable calls last night, but that surely wasn't one of them.

Blah, blah, blah, Beanpot, blah, blah blah...

Moving on: Four points up for grads this weekend. Millan seemed in great form yesterday, does he get both of the starts? Certainly seems like he's won the job again. Colby appeared healthy-ish, he at least had his normal frustration/anger levels back, if it safe to assume he dresses this weekend?

I didn't think Colby appeared healthy. He got completely burned on the point trying to keep a puck in at one point. His skating was nowhere near normal, IMO.

Re: Boston University 2009-2010 Season Thread III: From the Beanpot until the end...

Talked to Parker last Wednesday and he said then that Millan was already in position to start making back-to-back Friday-Saturday starts. I can't imagine that after the game he played last night against BC (I don't think I've seen him play better, ever, and I was there for the regionals against UNH and for the HE finals against Lowell last year) that he won't get both nods this weekend.

Um... he was standing still trying to pinch. It had nothing to do with his skating on that play you're referencing.

Re: Boston University 2009-2010 Season Thread III: From the Beanpot until the end...

Parker has to keep playing Millan right now. I don't think I've ever seen Kieran look as good as he did last night, not even last year.

I'm also wondering what it would take for Parker to take Saponari off the power play for a bit. He cannot keep missing open nets, and maybe moving him off of special teams will providing that kick in the butt to get Saponari going.

I've got to give big props to Colby Cohen for playing last night. He was clearly injured, skating pretty gingerly, but that didn't stop him from going as hard as he could. I'm a big critic of Colby, but the effort and heart he showed last night definitely won him some points in my book.

Typically if a defenseman is pinching, they don't do it at the blue line. He wasn't skating towards the puck down the boards (at which point his partner would/should have pulled back into the neutral zone to compensate), he was on the blue line. That far back, with the puck and BC coming towards him and his partner not falling back, no defenseman with a brain "pinches". If he was 100% he maybe gets burned a little and is a step or two behind - the BC player blew past him before he even moved.

Re: Boston University 2009-2010 Season Thread III: From the Beanpot until the end...

No one has mentioned this, but offensive player of the game has to go to Zach Cohen. He must've created about 15-20 scoring opportunities on his own last night, even though nearly every one ended in nothing because of a whiff or a missed connection somewhere. But he was skating his butt off all night and deserves praise as such.

Yeah ZCohen was outstanding last night.

I like Cohen, Zach that is.

Not a great skill set, but has developed nicely over his career. Strong on his skates now and should try to copyright the wraparound...

Zach is more inclined to spin around at or below the goal line and try to make some room for himself out of nothing. He also has a tendency to frequently be in the right spot in that same area to receive a loose puck.
