Re: Boston College Women's Hockey 2018-2019: NO COMMERCIALS, NO MERCY
I mean, honestly, "Minnesota and Wisconsin are just better" is a take that doesn't get thrown around enough W/R/T why BC has had such talented teams but no titles. Even in our undefeated season, that final was always going to be a pick 'em regardless of which WCHA team we played. We have a lot of talent but the other teams do too. Sometimes you just get beat.
I realize that Clarkson has a few, but you could make an argument that they pulled it out as an underdog in the non-Olympic year and then lucked out by having their best teams in the Olympic years when Minnesota and Wisconsin were down. Not that it takes anything at all away from it, but BC hasn't had that benefit.
I guess I'm just making excuses but having good players doesn't mean the other team doesn't have good players too. Realistically, even though we've been to the FF seven times, BC's only been a true contender for the national title, what, twice?
--2007 we had 10 losses and were basically an 8 seed that got a lucky draw, we weren't even in the same universe as Wisconsin, still forced 2OT against a Duluth team ranked higher than us.
--2011 7 losses and 6 ties, we played Wisconsin shockingly close and lost in the waning seconds but we were never winning that game
--2012 we had 10 losses and got blitzed by a ridiculous Wisconsin team
--2013 #4 seed, we were pretty good but ran into the best women's college team ever assembled, and still forced OT
--2015 you could definitely call us a contender, we shouldn't have lost that Harvard game. Even so, eventual champion Minnesota was the #1 seed. But yes, this was a year we could have won.
--2016 obviously a contender, yet everyone knew BC vs. Minnesota was a toss up. Still certainly could have won.
--2017, #4 seed, huge underdog against another fking Wisconsin juggernaut, still managed to play up to their level and lost in the waning seconds.
So... one year we were MAYBE the best team but really probably a coin flip,
one year we were a very serious contender but still not the best team,
three years we pretty good but definitely worse than who we lost to, and
two years we were frankly just happy to be there.
And I would say that in four of those seven years (2007, 2011, 2013, 2017) I would argue that we punched well above our weight.
I mean, sports, you know? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
