Boston College Offseason (Continued)

Re: Boston College Offseason (Continued)

You're right... No way would they play hockey at 7 pm with a 3:30 football game.

Easiest thing is to move that hockey game. If they don't, I wonder if they can ask the league to make sure this game is at noon. Even then, you'll have tailgating how many hours after the game (what was it last year for noon starts?). The game would get over about 3:30 and you could have tailgating for an hour or two at the end of the game and get people out of there unless they have hockey tickets at that time and it would work.

Can't they move the start time of the hockey game to 8:00pm? When we played out at Michigan a couple of years ago, they had a 3:30 home football game and the start time of the hockey game was moved to 8:00. It may not seem like much, but that hour could make a difference.

Re: Boston College Offseason (Continued)

They may be pals off the ice, but Cody had to call UNH to cancel his visit after he committed to NU. He had to make similar calls to UMass and to bu.

*Looks to the North*

Ah yeas, that's where Durham is :p

Would be interesting to know what made him choose NU.

I feel like traffic and logistics are probably a lot easier to pull off in Ann Arbor than in Chestnut Hill. Especially since Conte is used as a gate to enter into the football stadium, and since football tailgating basically takes up all of the parking space on campus (and creates the traffic nightmare to end all traffic nightmares)

Pluuuuuus most BC alumni and fans who would attend a sporting event would probably be at the football game; it would wreck hockey at the gate which is the last thing we need for banner night.

Have you ever been to Ann Arbor? The Big House and Yost are very close to each other. And The Big House holds 100K+. Obviously not as close as Conte and Alumni, but still very close. Walking distance/a few blocks apart close.

Intersting comment though about BC alumni and fans choosing football over hockey. What's the overlap in general? Would there be people that would normally just go to hockey? It's banner raising night. Would people decide not to go because of the football crowd? Because that's kind of lame.

A totally different culture on this end of Comm ave, football is king and there doesn't seem to be a second place. There are of course alumni who choose hockey and you know them, they're all on here;) i follow everything, including soccer but i would say the vast majority follow football and have a luke warm feeling about everything else, sadly. these are just my opinions and i am sure that some of my fellow alumni have their viewpoints that i am sure will follow. As for myself, NOTHING would keep me away from seeing that banner go to up to the Conte rafters........... even it were held in Tehran. It frustrates me no end that the hockey program is to some, an afterthought, imagine? :o

Pretty much, yeah.

Michigan has a much bigger alumni and local fan base than BC does. The BC local fan pool is limited. Whenever there are a bunch of games in the same weekend, forget it, at least one is going to be completely empty.

Hockey does have its own niche crowd that would put hockey #1, something that basketball doesn't really have, imo. But it's not a big crowd, certainly not one befitting a banner raising game.

Re: Boston College Offseason (Continued)

my dad is BC '52  and was a season ticket holder for both sports for about 25 years. I've asked him about this and he thinks during his time near both programs there was much more support for the hockey team back then relatively speaking or in terms of what it gets now in comparison to football.......that make sense? ;) is it a result of the Flutie era and the increase in the popularity of college football in the area and at the school itself BECAUSE of Flutie? i would never cast any negativity on that incredible run obviously but wondering if football becoming so popular had a reverse effect on hockey. we always had a good hockey program, football not as much............ that notion may be an idea brought on by a late saturday night:) but some food for thought.......

Re: Boston College Offseason (Continued)

I think it just has to do more with football's emergence as America's clear #1 sport and college football's unquestioned status as "king" when it comes to revenue and national attention.

Let's face it, when people watch college sports nowadays it's often less about supporting kids who went to your school than it is about hoping to brag around the watercooler at work on Monday... and for the colleges, it's about raising a ton of money. Football fits the bill in both cases.

Re: Boston College Offseason (Continued)

I see football talk so I feel alright asking this...

Any season ticket people / student ticket people have any idea what time the ND/BC game is this year on the 2nd?

what ever time Notre Dame wants it to be:rolleyes:

Re: Boston College Offseason (Continued)

It is not so much that Hockey has become an afterthought as Football has emerged big time at the Heights. The old days would pack McHugh Forum and ticket demand was more difficult because of the size of the rink(about 4200 IIRC). Now with the larger rink it is much easier to get tickets at the last minute and BC has consistently averaged over 5300 I believe. The student population demographics has shifted dramatically from mostly Boston area based to a national base which means the student population at large is at least half unfamiliar with hockey when they get here. Many of them pick up the interest while many do not. The locals still support the program much like they used to in the past. What is the most damaging thing now is the lack of radio coverage for it hurts keeping the local fan interest at the former level. Time will only tell if this creates a trend for lessening the local interest or not but it seems like a dangerous thing to try for the local fan is what keeps the attendance up.

Re: Boston College Offseason (Continued)

i cant imagine how the administration feels that not having a radio contract is beneficial to the program. do they believe that the 'blackout' will force people to buy more tickets?

it is pretty humbling:o to have to listen to BU hockey radio:eek: on 1510 or where ever it is on the dial on the way out of Kelly Rink for my hour long ride home after every home game:(

Re: Boston College Offseason (Continued)

WJC feedback is Dumoulin did ok, not top 4 but solid. PW and PS are out of the picture for now.

You have to deal with donor based parking and donor based seating. That has driven some regulars away. Lots of empty seats.

Re: Boston College Offseason (Continued)

Face it, no one cares about hockey at any level anymore except the hardcore fans. There are no casual hockey fans, and even fewer casual college hockey fans.

Football and bouncyball at least get coverage in the media, which increases the letigimacy-meter in most people's heads. Given the chance to go to a BC football game against a team they've heard of or a hockey game vs Northeastern, they'll go to football.

Re: Boston College Offseason (Continued)

When all is said and done, I think Dumoulin will be on the team.

Re: Boston College Offseason (Continued)

When all is said and done, I think Dumoulin will be on the team.

28 now: 3 Goalies, 9 D, 16 F to be cut to 22.

I would assume 2 G, 7 D and 13 F or if they go with 3 G take away either a D or F.

Only way Dumoulin does not make it is if 3 D cuts are all BC players.
Samuelson did not dress for the last 2 games and Wey missed 2 earlier so I would think Wey has a slightly better shot but there still is a week of camp in December to make a final push. A strong first half of the college season could help any of the contenders as well.
