Boston College hockey 2021-2022

I'm sure Ayers knows the score now on his future at BC. Valued assistant, but never more than that, which is understandable but if Ayers is like most D-1 coaches, he is going to want to get a shot at a HC job at some point, somewhere. His situation will likely resolve itself at some point, fairly soon ...

It could end up actually being a Greg Brown situation all over again. Brown waited his time and eventually bolted with Quinn to the NHL and then landed up with HC job in USHL. I have no idea what a USHL HC makes but I would imagine Ayers will start looking around for HC jobs elsewhere now. Unless of course he is just totally content in his role right now. I don't know him so not sure on that. For college jobs maybe he waits out what happens with Souza. But at the same time perhaps trying to get a USHL HC job might be more beneficial in that pursuit.

BC has had a run of terrific goalies, Knight, Woll, Demko, all now playing in the NHL. Have to think that Ayers had more than a little to do with it. I have heard the Ayers fits the mold and is a down to earth and a very good guy. Good to hear that he is keeping the group together and that they will be staying on. At some point they will all want a HC job, I hope they get there shot somewhere but not for a few years. Everything I hear from former players and coaches is that Brownie is the right guy and Leaman was not. A little over 4 months to hockey season, in the meantime enjoy watching Johnny Hockey and Krieder lead their teams in the next round of the playoffs.

Sadly for Ayers (and for those of us who like him), the Souza situation at UNH has probably "poisoned the well" for the next UNH hire being an alum. It's just gone so badly, and with a new AD on the way, you've gotta think that person will want to make a splash with a signature hire to start fresh again.

I suspect the question really will be, does UNH get an outsider as their new AD, or do they just ring up Commish Nigel or the missus to see if they want to return to Durham, which could be good news (short term) for MS7, and even better news (long term) for Ayers. 'Cuz I don't see Souza righting the ship regardless of whether he's got one or five more years to get it done.

Ayers played for Dubuque, and Brown just left Dubuque, so maybe there is a natural fit to expand the portfolio outside of the BC shadow.

We'll see what happens in the future but I wanted Buckley gone to bring in a coach to work with the forwards. Maybe this is the right move for now to keep all the recruiting in tact and to make sure kids don't transfer but I'm not a fan of it. I wanted Brown as the coach but I'm hopeful in a Buckley leaving the staff next summer and Orpik being here for the long haul. It doesn't make any sense to have Brown, Orpik and Buckley all on the same staff

Ya that's where I am at

It just put the program in a weird spot. Ayers is probably gone next year or the year after to a head coaching position somewhere and then they have to replace him with another goalie coach. Then they're moving Orpik or Buckley to coach forwards which I really don't like the idea of or they make a 2nd coaching change at the same time which would also suck. Maybe they know Orpik isn't coming back after next year and they'll hire an offensive guy then? Idk, I just don't like it

The lack of AD could be complicating things. Even if Brown wanted his own guys maybe he was told he'd have to wait to discuss with new AD. It's not the worst thing in the world for Brown to get settled and then take a hard look at everything within the program over the next year. That's probably one advantage Pandolfo had at BU. He had that year to take everything in. An AD will be in place soon and Brown can decide if he wants to pursue staff changes. I also don't know how contracts work for assistants. I am assuming they don't get deals that are tied to the HC deal. Do they operate year to year? Do some have multi year deals?

It was never going to be easy to replace Coach York, and there was inevitably always going to be some degree of instability in the aftermath of his departure. BC Hockey has been on a smooth ride without any real turbulence for almost 30 years now, so now that the source of that stability (York) has finally stepped away, it's totally normal for there to be some uncertainty and lots of questions as to what the next few years are going to look like.

I suspect Coach Brown will settle things in short order after a year or two of staff transition.

I do not see a "Count Cedorchuk" post-Ceglarski disaster on the horizon, so be happy. :-)

Looks like we may see some shake ups with regards to recruiting. Guessing they told Norcross he'd have to wait another year to come or wouldn't play so he started looking elsewhere. Glad to see he landed on his feet at Northeastern with Riley. Wonder if we'll see any more changes in the 2023 class. Never know if kids committed are offered full scholarships, 2/2's, halfs or basically pwo's

So, what's everyone's thoughts on the USC/UCLA to the Big 10 earthquake? The general feeling seems to be that this is going to touch off a further collapse of the PAC 12 with several other teams leaving and ultimately trigger a raid on the ACC with the SEC and Big 10 becoming two mega conferences and everyone else on the outside looking in. If that happens, the only prayer BC has of being one of the cool kids is the Boston media market, but with the lack of football pedigree plus the state of the basketball program, you have to figure Clemson, Florida State, Miami, UNC for starters would be way more desirable to the Big 10 and/or SEC. I think this could very well end up with BC on the outside looking in, in which case the football program is a dead man walking.

Depends on if the Big Ten/SEC want an NFL model. They each have 16 teams so they could easily turn it into that and have Big Ten and SEC playoffs leading to a super bowl just like NFL. Or if they are willing to throw a bone to remaining teams/conferences for one or a couple autobids into an expanded college football playoff. There are still big fish out there like Notre Dame, Clemson, etc. I just question how much bigger these conferences can get and still have a logical regular season schedule.

Be careful what you wish for. You may bleed maroon and gold, but do you really want to really want to be an institution where the football tail wags the entire university dog? Because that's what will happen should BC decide to go down this swillhole, should it even get the chance.

We're all smart enough to understand that the end game in all of this is a football-driven B1G-SEC college sports duopoly that will make untold tons of money. That might be OK if football money built new classroom buildings, labs, dormitories, libraries, research centers, etc. but, in almost every case, football money goes back into ever more bloated football budgets that buy ever more lavish diamond-encrusted, platinum-plated football-only facilities.

Gotta wonder if certain boards of trustees will finally see this scam for what it is and draw a proverbial line in the sand. Not holding my breath, though.

Oh, and hockey expansion? Pure fantasy.

I don't think it's going to matter, as I don't think BC will be getting an invite to the party. Clemson, Florida State, and Miami will be desirable to the SEC. UNC and UVA are probably desirable to both the SEC and Big 10 as large flagship state universities that are in southern states (SEC cares) and are academically strong (Big 10 cares). Five years ago when VT's football team was still consistently ranked in the Top 20, that might have gotten them a ticket to the dance. You'd think both would be interested in Duke's basketball program, but their football team is an anchor. BC, Wake, Pitt, Syracuse, Louisville, NC State, and Georgia Tech are all likely hopeless if and when the ACC gets raided. They'll end up between the SEC/Big 10 duopoly and mid-majors, but will be further behind the duopoly then they will be ahead of the mid-majors.
