Boston College hockey 2021-2022

Mike McMahon & Adam Wodon must've been punching the air when they heard their guy Dennehy wasn't getting the gig, would've had so many free scoops with all the cheerleading they were doing in the process

I wonder what job they'll be pushing him for next! Maybe UNH if that opens next year.

Spoke to several former players who were playing when he was coaching and there were very positive about the choice, 5 months to hockey season. Can't wait.

Yes, former players definitely support this hire. Would love to know if Fr. Leahy simply rubberstamped the pick from whoever he is listening to at the moment (with no AD) or if he picked himself based on final interviews. Maybe he asked each candidate if they go to church on Sundays.

Former players all over twitter and instagram about the hire, great to see. See some current guys and recruits too

I'm right there with you on knowing how it all went down. BChockeyblogger has something coming out tomorrow, hopefully he'll shed some details on it. My guess is it was more of a rubber stamp than Leahy actually making the decision, but who knows. Also, if what you said is true about Kevin Shea, which I have no reason to doubt, it's pretty interesting he stuck his neck out against the hockey alumni, especially when he's not an alumni himself. I could care less about the alumni vs. non alumni thing but there are definitely those around the program and school who do

Here are the questions I'd love to know about the process...
1. Who were the alumni on the hiring committee?
2. When was the decision ultimately made?
3. How much of a input did Leahy ultimately put in on the hiring?

Questions about moving forward...
1. What is the staff makeup going to be?
2. Any info about a potential new hockey arena or practice facility?

I wonder if Greg Brown is too nice a guy to rock the boat and clean house. He coached with Ayers at BC so depends on how that relationship evolved. I could easily see Brown keeping the staff as is so he can get settled. I also don't know how contracts for assistants usually work. Are those guys typically just on one year deals?

I wouldn't anticipate any info in hockey facility upgrades. That will probably have to wait for new AD. They were probably in a better position to push for facility upgrades with York at the helm. Now it's a new guy with no pull. We'll see on that. Maybe York did some work behind the scenes and they can take it from there.

As for staff makeup I would like to see Mike Ayers retained. I believe he will be a head coach someday. He has done well with BC's goalies; Brown was himself a defensive standout so the other spot should go to an offensive minded coach. This is by no means a knock on Buckley but Brown fits the defensive mold already so BC has to go for someone to help run the forwards.

I would like to see Orpik remain as a fresh young face and a defensive specialist. Within the last couple of years, the PP was consistently awful and not sure if Buckley or Ayers is responsible for that.

Buckley controlled the power play…it was poor. Too much structure, and not enough creativity. Warren should have seen much more time on PP, as he is our most creative offensive D-man.

The Power play should be improved regardless of whether they bring in someone to replace Buckley or Ayers with Brown coming in as head coach. He ran the PP for BC for many years even though he coached the defense while Cav coached the PK. Frankly both the power play and the penalty kill have been mediocre/trash for a while. I looked at how those have mattered in years they've made the frozen four/national championship by ranking in the country since 05-06 (that's as far back as CHN goes) vs. where they are now, see below

'05-06 = 45th PP, 10th PK
'06-07 = 9th PP, 4th PK
'07-08 = 7th PP, 23rd PK
'09-10 = 7th PP, 14th PK
'11-12 = 10th PP, 3rd PK
'13-14 = 5th PP, 1st PK
'15-16 = 9th PP, 4th PK

Here's where they've been since Brown has left...
'18-19 =27th PP, 25th PK
'19-20 =15th PP, 28th PK
'20-21 = 41st PP, 7th PK
'21-22 = 30th PP, 49th PK

I think we all agree that BC needs to get bigger on defense. It will be interesting to see who GB brings in on defense.

It was unexplainable why Warren was not on the first team PP. All things considered I think GB is stepping in at the right time. This team should be a FF team in 2024 with the returning 4 year type of talent mixed in with the 1st and 2nd round projected draft picks coming in the next two years. I expect GB will be an excellent recruiter as well.

Go Eagles!

Ya I don't love that but at the same time he coached with Ayers so he knows what he's getting. Brown can get settled with the current staff and truly evaluate over the next year or two.

I'm sure Ayers knows the score now on his future at BC. Valued assistant, but never more than that, which is understandable but if Ayers is like most D-1 coaches, he is going to want to get a shot at a HC job at some point, somewhere. His situation will likely resolve itself at some point, fairly soon ...
