Boston College Hockey 2009-2010

Re: Boston College Hockey 2009-2010

Did BC have any four-point weekends last year? For sure it's their first this season.

Re: Boston College Hockey 2009-2010

The scoring balance on this team is unreal. After this weekend, they are a potential top 10 team without any players among the top 50 point scorers. Tonight they had 4 goals and 10 different players on the score sheet. It's been balanced production all season, and now they have two goalies playing well.

It feels good climbing the ladder, as BC hockey usually spends the first half underachieving lofty pre-season expectations.

Re: Boston College Hockey 2009-2010

This is a special, special team folks. If you haven't seen them play, you absolutely have to get to a game. I'm not sure the Gionta teams were this deep, with smooth fast skating and sharp crisp passing. Really quite fun to watch, and they haven't yet approached their full potential, IMO. Just wow.

They came out buzzing in the first period, and could (should) have been up 2-0 after one. First goal was scored under a minute into the game, but the ref had blown the live puck dead before the puck crossed the line.
Later in the first, I believe it was Lombardi (or was it Almeida), received a pass in the slot, deked the d-man, then deked Milan out of his jock strap (some awesome stick handling there), and walked in alone to within a foot of the crease with any empty net... and the shot hit the post!
I thought right then and there that the hockey Gods were with BU tonight.

Second period we held on... big time. BU looked like us in the 1st (and we like them). Man... what a period. Down 1-0 early in the 2nd, we had to kill a 5 on 3 with one of our guys playing with no stick, so virtually a 5 on 2. Then BU is buzzing our net for about the next 10 minutes. With about 5:00 to go, I said to my bro, "if we get out of this period down only 1-0 it'll be a miracle"... and then Sneep ties it up with just over 2:00 to go! :)

Third period was all Eagles. They looked hungry for the win and out hustled BU to every puck... they took this game over. Scoring 3 goals for the 4-1 lead, they maintained their energy level and just kept pouring it on until the final buzzer. I love that type of heart and determination.

I'm not going to say anything negative tonight. Muse was great in net. The forwards were great, the D was great, the whole team played great. They all worked very hard for the win. And it looks like there won't be any need for Jerry's annual 2nd half line tweaking... these lines are really clicking together.

Gawdang... I'm impressed. Can't wait to see them when they're really good. Given their development to date, that could be as early as this Wednesday night. I'll be there. :)

Re: Boston College Hockey 2009-2010

Slow tonight - distracted by watching Alabama game while editing - but mini-gallery has been added to the game recap - http://www.uscho.com/recaps/20092010/m/12/05/bc-bu.php - just scroll down.

Good sports night.

Why wait until Wednesday to cheer on the Eagles - the ladies will be playing UNH at Conte on Tuesday at 7 pm (they defeated Northeastern on Friday).

While I'm not willing to go that far, nobody can have any complaints about this weekend. Look at how last year went, Smith and Muse coming off injuries, an extremely young defense...I don't think we could have expected more than they've shown us so far. 8-3-2 and 2nd in Hockey East after UNH finishes off UVM (up 5-2 in the 2nd).

4th in PWR. All the uncertainty while facing a tough schedule filled with early road games. Now, the real sign of a good team is how you build off a great weekend. Will they be looking ahead to the break or will their focus be on beating two teams that they are better than?

Wednesday @Harvard
Saturday @Providence

Two games this team should win.

Agree we should win the next two, but if we don't, I'm sure it won't be from lack of effort. This team brings the intensity every night, regardless of the opponent.

Regarding last night, I have a complaint (I just didn't want to bring it up last night ;) ). We passed up on some nice grade A chances with the puck in the slot, looking for something better. Dang... we've got to take that shot from 10' out front. What's the sense of passing to the wing below the circle? We did that numerous times and it drives me freakin' nuts.

Should be plenty seats available Wednesday now that Harvard is going through exams and their team is struggling.

Is Joe Whitney sporting facial hair on the USCHO front page pic? Jerry must be getting soft in his old age.....

The downside to having such a good photographer taking the shots. I would have had Joe Whitney looking like Eli Whitney if I was behind the camera.
Great shot by Melissa but she needs to airbrush some of these things out of the shot so the guys don't end up in the doghouse. ;) :D

I'm pretty sure Jerry's rule has always been "No Facial Hair" and it wasn't open to negotiation or discussion.

Saw Benn Ferriero after several games last season with the exact same look. Not a beard but a day or so of growth.

Re: Boston College Hockey 2009-2010

5 o'clock shadow (or more like 6:50 shadow). Plenty of BC players have had that level.

Re: Boston College Hockey 2009-2010

To all, it was a really good weekend for sure.

Great to see so many BC fans starting to get the same feeling about this young club.

My caution to all remains the same...beware of some missteps along the way.

I continue to be very impressed with the talent and maturity of the young freshman on this team. Mullane has really benefited from the departure Ryan to the OHL. But to an individual these newbies have played beyond their tender years and seem to be absorbing the staff knowledge at a very high rate of retention. Of course, there can be no substitute for EXPERIENCE and as we all know these types of learnings are sometimes painful. One thing they all seem to have in common is a passion for the action...they want to play and play hard they do!

I suggest that this team will go after Harvard and Providence with a hungry attitude focused on building on previous success. They are starting to really feel "it" but their 2009/2010 journey is just beginning.:)

I see a lot of them almost every day and even the 5 o'clock shadow is rare, and whatever Joe is sporting is at least pushing 7:00p.m.ish.
That being said... These kids are fun to watch. The second period out in Amherst was something else. Virtually the entire period was played in the Umass end of the building. And whomever mentioned that they need to shoot more from the slot would have enjoyed seeing C. Atkinsons one-timer from the slot with just under a minute left.

The rookies are surprisingly impressive so early, Mullane especially, but the reason for this team's success so far has been the production from the returning players. For whatever reason, too many of these guys underachieved last year and didn't produce like they were capable. This year is quite different. Sneep, Smith, Gibbons, J. Whitney, etc., they are night and day from last year. That is what the freshmen needed. The upperclassmen producing, feeling good about themselves, and thus leading in a positive way.

Re: Boston College Hockey 2009-2010

Going way back you used to see some stubble on good old Mike Lephart. That kid remains the gold standard for a 3rd liner in my book. Nothing new with the little bit of facial hair. Although they are pushing the limit.
