Re: Boston College Hockey '13-'14: Tournament Season - One Game At A Time!

Goals for Atkinson & Orpik lats night. After the Atkinson one Kenny Albert & Pierre went on a soliloquy on BC, Jerry, Brown, & Cav and their ability to develop small forwards.

Hopefully Boyle can continue the streak tonight :D

Re: Boston College Hockey '13-'14: Tournament Season - One Game At A Time!

I'm curious on your thoughts on the BC freshmen forwards from this past season - Fitzgerald, Cangelosi, Calnan, others? Did they meet/exceed expectations? Who among them will be stars as upperclassmen? I didn't get to watch too many BC games, but I thought they stood out earlier in the season (including Beanpot) more than in the NCAA games, when BC seemed to be relying very heavily on the top line.

Adam Gilmour belongs with the 3 you named. I think all four will be regulars going forward.
Two early to tell on a future star, but Gilmour (center) and Fitzgerald (wing) have potential IMO. Gilmour is similar to a Mullane type player, with possibly higher scoring upside if paired with some good mates.

Don't know what to expect out of Cangelosi or Calnan next year. Both are great skaters and hard workers. I know one thing... Cangelosi has to shoot the puck more. Not sure if that's Calnan's game (27 SOG), but I had thought Cango was a scorer and he only had 43 SOG (10 goals).

That's one heck of a freshman class at BC. 8 very good hockey players in that bunch (4 F, 3 D, 1 G). And a few more that watched most games from the stands that can hold their own.

Cangelosi is already a very good two way player. He has more offensive upside than he showed, as he has speed that he can use to the outside as he gains more confidence and strength. He is a very good passer, but does need to look for his own shot more. Next season he will see much PP time and this will accelerate his development. Calnan was very effective along the boards, and playing physical. He has good speed as well, so he may blossom offensively as he gains more experience. Fitzgerald is really good and I thought Gilmour played well. Gilmour has really good size to go with his skating. I think he blossoms during that Frosh to Soph. jump, where we often see the greatest improvement.

I guess start out by saying that the FR class is going to be the core of the program for the next couple of years.

Considering the youth on the back end the performance from Santini, McCoshen, Demko, & Savage this year was incredible. Especially the first 3 were some of the most valuable players on the team this season and are incredibly young.

Specifically about the forwards, I said the forming of the big line stunted the development of Cangelosi & Fitz. I think Cangelosi is going to pump in 20-25 next year and now that Billy is gone, Austin has the award for best 2 way F on the team. Think another summer for Fitz will allow him to be a C on this level but he showed flashes of his skill and scored one of the biggest goals of the season (UML goal).

Regarding Gilmour, Calnan, & Gaudreau. They were the 2nd best line on the team for the last month of the season (for the correction police I know Silk was with them for ND but the point still stands).

Is Grant or Joe (or anyone else) able to post a link to the highlight film?

Re: Boston College Hockey '13-'14: Tournament Season - One Game At A Time!

Odd that BC put out an announcement about it, no?

Getting 3+ years out of the top players is one of the reasons York is able to keep this thing going.

Defensive core of:
JR: Matheson & Doherty
SO: Santini, McCoshen, Savage
FR: Hanifin

Whoah.

Edit: regarding the video, BC usually posts it online. If I see it, I'll link it.

Matheson
Santini
McCoshen
Hanifin

At least in regard to where they were/will be drafted, reminds me of the Wisconsin defense in 2010.

Not sure I like the sound of that. We put up 5 on their butts in the championship game.
Now, if you were talking the 2006 Badger D... ;)

Add demko to the mix & you have 5 top 2 round players on the blue line and back.

Yikes, can I petition the NCAA for another year of eligibility for MacLeod?

For most of recent memory heading into the season BC had better F's than BU, and BU had better D, looks like that may be flipped right now.

BU still has a lot of questions going into next year. Not sure I can say BU has better Fs than BC. Even with losing that tremendous first line for BC, BU only brings back about 15 more goals than BC depending on who departs. BU has a very good class coming in but so does BC. Eichel can't do it by himself and Milano is not that far behind Eichel in skill. BC sophomores have a lot of talent and will have greater ice time this year so expect players like Fitzgerald and Cangelosi to take a big step up. Biggest difference is BU should have much improved depth this year. Should be interesting to watch.
