Re: Boston College Hockey '13-'14: Tournament Season - One Game At A Time!

bottom line is we know what kind of team they have to be in order to succeed. the mistakes and a softie here and there are enough to doom them. i'm not mad right now. certainly disappointed but they can play better than this, we know that. we know they will be the #1 in worcester, a place that has been kind over the years. we know that the last time this happened, york's team rebounded and made the FF. all is not lost. but it will be if they don't clean some things up.

would be pretty hard to insert billett at this point, i don't see it happening. we'll see. a lot of you were clamoring for demko and that's what we got.

Re: Boston College Hockey '13-'14: Tournament Season - One Game At A Time!

York is going to look like a genius when he brings a whole new lineup to the DCU Center in 2 weeks. Some poor coach breaks down film of BC in a span of 20 minutes, wrings his hands and knows he'll win and then bam, who are these guys?

Not looking to curry favor with the enemy, but I'm pretty sure 5 D-1 titles (4 with the alma mater) and a 5-peat in the former Jack Parker Invitational already qualifies him, no matter what questions may have been asked in the old days ...

Re: Boston College Hockey '13-'14: Tournament Season - One Game At A Time!

in my opinion, the only impactful lineup changes would involve breaking up the top line. has it come to that?

Re: Boston College Hockey '13-'14: Tournament Season - One Game At A Time!

Since no one feels like talking about the game or their feelings, I'm going to put this out there and talk about my feelings. When Linell-Sit-Smith rolled over the boards for the final shift of the 2nd period... knowing the team has been giving up goals all March in the last minute of periods, I almost had a freakin brain aneurysm.

This weekend:
Sit -7
Smith -4
Linell -4

Fitzgerald -3
Brown -2
Cangelosi -2

Silk -1
Calnan E
Gilmour +1

Anyone want to offer thoughts on this other than the obvious that BC is a 1-line team 5x5 and Calnan and Gilmour are going to be good and could be great. I mean, -7 on the weekend... ND only scored I think 11 even strength goals this weekend. ONLY! JFC.
That was the line Smith-Sit-Linell were matched up with all weekend... ND's best line (Herr-Tynan-Rust). Why wouldn't they jump over the boards to cover their line? Not saying I agree with it, but that's the shut down line. Once upon a time, Brownies line went up against opponent's first line.

Yes... Gilmour and Calnan are already very good. In fact, Gilmour is in great position around the net a lot of the time. Somebody put the puck on his stick please. Or shoot the puck when he's out front. He's quite good at redirects. Jerry will hopefully figure it out.

Well, I thought a lot of you were being a little rough on Matheson after yesterday's game. But God Almighty... sometimes he's just on another planet out there. Like the the harmless pass from his d-mate across the D-zone that almost hit his stick in the 3rd period. He never saw the pass coming. He realized it when the puck hit the boards and bounced off and almost hit his stick again. Then he stood there looking at the puck while a ND forward scooped it up and skated right by him. W_T_F is he on?

Alright, I'm out of here to stew a little more, then get some rest.

Yes... and the impact would be the same as last season. One and done in the Big Show. Would save me some money though. :D

Agree. In his last 5 starts, Demko is 1-3-1 with 17 goals against. Why the hell would ya want to change that?

you must have missed my point. billett hasn't played in a meaningful game in some time now. i think that's how they feel about it. again, i don't care either way who plays in worcester.

lowell-nd at the garden...hope they have plenty of coffee on hand ;)

i think it will be pc and nd saturday night

Neither do I. Whatever Jerry throws out there I'll be there to root them on. Would like to see them get back to mid-season form.

Yes.

Choice #1: Have a scoring threat on the ice 25% of the time 5x5.
Choice #2: Have a scoring threat on the ice 50% of the time 5x5.

That's assuming we put our -7 shutdown specialist line on the ice at all. You can up those percentages by rolling the dice with rolling 3 lines.

Seems like a no-brainer. In option 1, any team that doesn't have a -7 shutdown specialist then shuts down the top line or reasonably keeps a lid on them, and you are relying on the other team to take dumb penalties (maybe even give you 5x3s) to generate your offensive output. Granted ND is phenomenal at putting large, skilled guys on the ice 4 lines deep but these types of teams that are able to outmuscle BC with generally balanced regularity are going to pose big problems for BC. And that is something that you can run into in the NCAAs at any time. It's honestly going to come down to luck of the draw and how many PPs they can draw.

Gaudreau-Hayes-Cangelosi (Hayes to center, stays with Gaudreau add speed down the wing and get another scorer going)

Calnan-Arnold-Gilmour (veteran center adds scoring to make a brutal line to play against)

Fitzgerald-Brown-Silk (shutdown line has smarts, size, a good center, and if Silk can smoke people on the forecheck will help with some generate offensive zone time)

Smith-Sit-Linell (when BC gets up by 5 goals or more, unleash these beasts on their top line. BOOM!)
OR
Spiro-Richardson-Gaudreau (these guys can't possible go -7 can they?)
Top line reunites on PP anyway. See you in Philly. Done.

PC is one dangerous team right now. Went up to Alfond and took 2 when they had too, then took 2 more from Maine at home. I think they take the HE title this year.

Ayuh. And BC has a solid goalie that has too much pressure on him. It would be terrible to see this team lose so easy. Maybe gotta work and put the best goalie forward.

Is there any goalie that plays for a D-1 national contender that doesn't have pressure on him?
Curious as to why you think our guy has 'too much' pressure on him?

He has too much pressure on him when the defense breaks down like they did in that series...Santini just let a guy sit in front of the net on Rust's first goal.

Re: Boston College Hockey '13-'14: Tournament Season - One Game At A Time!

It's an interesting perspective one gets when watching on TV rather than watching live. I was at a memorial service for an old friend yesterday so couldn't be at the game.

When watching the game live, I see flubs in the D zone, say 'Oh-oh', then tend to forget about them when it turns out harmless, and we wind up scoring some goals and ultimately win the game. Watching on TV, I see the flub and say 'Oh-oh', and then can rewind instantly to see what went wrong. Some of that stuff just sticks in the old memory bank, and I have to tell ya... I loved the outcome of the game yesterday, but I went    an awful lot in the last 25 minutes of that game. We may have held ND to 21 SOG, but we gave up numerous Grade A chances to them that amazingly never reached the net.

The difference between Friday and Saturday, IMO, was ND capitalized on Friday and did not on Saturday. One can also say, we did capitalize Sat. but not on Friday. That's hockey. BUT... our best shot at advancing from here on out is to tighten up the D.

I am the Nervous Nelly now. Me thinks if we play that D and give away the puck again like yesterday, we could be in for a very long day. TIGHTEN IT UP!

Go Eagles!

LOL, I told you, be careful what you wish for. Notre Dame took it to us and capitalized in this series.

Young. Enough said. :)
John Muse was young, and small. Won it all as a frosh.
Here's the highlites of todays game. Show me the pressure.
This kid is 6'3"... BIG in net, yet sprawls on the ice and makes himself very small under 'pressure'. Look at the highlites.

John Muse had this same problem for a while. All ya had to do was shoot high. Coaching corrected it. Lets see what coaching does.
There's a very capable backup in the wings if this isn't fixed.

Well Ray, I thought we played well enough today to win. Unfortunately, we didn't win.
A couple of soft goals (IMO), and a disallowed goal (that I never saw a replay of, but am told by TV viewers it should have been a goal), and we do win. But that's hockey. Have some stuff to fix, but I think this team is capable of a big run in the NCAA, even if we have to play Notre Dame.

I don't disagree with your assessment but I thought by now they would not play soft on defense and play every shift hard. Hopefully they will be in Worcester and able to make a small run of 4 games ))

I watched the game on TV and the BC player looks like he uses his arm to deflect the puck into the net.
