Boston College Eagles 🦅 2018-2019

Re: Boston College Eagles 🦅 2018-2019

Well that means someone else can come in early and fill his spot.

Hopefully a player of quality and will stay awhile.

What is a concern is the program's instability at present.

Is it time for JY and his staff to step down ? Is it time for a new direction under a new coach ?

Would Brown be the right coach if JY did step down ? But JY has a renewed contract and staying awhile.

Not unexpected. It's gotta be awfully tough having parents like that and peaking at like 9 years old. I feel bad for the kid.

School may or may not have been his thing. But given what I saw on the ice this season, a degree sure would have been a nice backup plan.

We NEED to keep Cotton to have any realistic chance of winning anything next year. But I don't get a good feeling there either.

Re: Boston College Eagles 🦅 2018-2019

KPD reported on Wahlstrom also says that David Cotton is returning to BC (as of right now). He will pursue the FA route after BC. Maybe he's trying to use that as leverage right now. Who knows.

Re: Boston College Eagles 🦅 2018-2019

Possible BC Recruits in the Fall

Spencer Knight Goalie
Mike Hardman Forward
Matt Boldy Forward
Alex Newhook Forward
Marshall Warren Defense
Drew Helleson Defense

Steve Davis Defense

Re: Boston College Eagles 🦅 2018-2019

I would cross off Davis for next year, don't think that is happening. The rest of your list is accurate. I think Danny Weight might be in there as well.

Re: Boston College Eagles 🦅 2018-2019

Out: Woll, Milosz
In: Knight, unknown 3rd goalie

Out: Fitzgerald, Kim, Samuelsson
In: Helleson, Warren

Assuming they bring in another dman but don't think it will be Stephen Davis

Out: Brown, Dudek, Wahlstrom, Tortora
In: Boldy, Newhook, Hardman, Weight

Re: Boston College Eagles 🦅 2018-2019

Would have been nice if they didn't lose Cam York and Patrick Moynihan

Re: Boston College Eagles 🦅 2018-2019

Add to that, Ryan Siedem and T.J Walsh. All four of those guys had good years. Ouch.

Stephen Davis is a 2002 birth year and wont be at the heights until 2020 at the earliest. More likely 2021-22 season.

Out: Brown, Dudek, Wahlstrom, Tortora
In: Boldy, Newhook, Hardman, Weight

No kidding, right? Something is rotten in Denmark indeed. Five years ago the though of BC having a highly regarded prospect decommit in favor of Providence would have been unthinkable. Now they eat BC's lunch (1st round of the HE playoffs notwithstanding).

BC, BU, UNH, and Maine have swapped places with Northeastern, UMass, Providence, and UMass-Lowell. Hard to believe.

In the North, UMN, UND, and uw have swapped places with SCSU, UMD, and Mankato. It's madness.

Adapt or die.

Lately everything in the athletic department stinks. But we just keep doing the same stuff over and over again in all 3 major sports in every way.

Football: Hire bad coach. Extend his contract for no reason. Run, run, pass punt from Addazio.
Basketball: Hire bad coach. Extend his contract for no reason.
Hockey: I don't even know what to tell you at this point.

Is it the athletic department or someone over them that controls the decision making ?

The other rumor I heard is this. Some ex players who have made it in the NHL declined to support the program with donations. What would **** them off ?

Colleges figured out its better to recruit 24 year old kids than 17 year old blue chippers who leave after one or two years.

Re: Boston College Eagles 🦅 2018-2019

The best scenario is to have a reasonable age limit.

BINGO. Make college sports for college age kids. Give a year window after high school graduation to enroll in a college and this nonsense stops. No issues in any other NCAA sport - basketball/football, etc. all do exceptionally well without having kids wait 2-4 years after they graduate high school. Trevor Lawrence (QB for National Champion Clemson Tigers) was 18 last season....

Great article on the Athletic from Corey Pronman on new incoming goalie Spencer Knight: https://theathletic.com/883465/2019/03/27/pronman-spencer-knight-and-the-debate-over-drafting-a-goalie-in-the-first-round/

For those who don't have a subscription, here are some highlights:

Spencer Knight is all but a lock to be the first goalie picked in this year’s NHL Draft.

If Knight was going to be a top 25 or 35 pick, I wouldn’t write this column. If he was another Jake Oettinger, it wouldn’t be interesting or worthy of discussion. However, throughout the course of the season, I have had serious discussions with NHL scouts about him being a top 15 pick, if not top 10. And thus, it means it’s time to talk about Knight and the concept of using a high draft pick on a goaltender.

“He’s a sure thing to be a NHLer. He can be a game stealing No. 1 goalie. His technical skill is elite. His hockey sense and skating are high-end,” said an NHL scout.

“With his high-end athleticism, hockey sense, poise, size, what he’s done at the program, there should be no doubt he’s a first-round pick,” said another scout.

“I see a lot of similarities with Joe Woll, Thatcher Demko and Cory Schneider,” Boston College coach Jerry York said. “He (Knight) has great size, plays his angles extremely well, and he sees the play very well. He has great athleticism. It’s remarkable how he moves post to post.”

“Spencer Knight is the best goaltending athlete USA Hockey has ever seen,” said his coach John Wroblewski. “He’s 6-(foot)-3, he’s one of our best off-ice testers. I’ve never described a goalie like this, but it’s like watching poetry in motion the way he moves around his crease.”

And that was it in terms of questionable goals. Nearly every other goal was a danger area shot, second chance opportunity, etc.

This lack of bad goals speaks to how good Knight is. He’s in control and has no real weakness in his game, in my eyes. His side-to-side agility, his hockey sense and his poise all get high-end grades.

“He’s so smart. He’s got very good hockey sense. He’s not a goalie whose going to dive around. He knows where the player is going to shoot and has very good reads,” said Knight’s U18 teammate Jack Hughes.

In describing his own game, Knight said: “I think I’ve developed a calm demeanor in net. I try not to scramble and go into desperation mode too quick. I’ve worked on not over-moving. I’ve worked on letting things come to me. Goaltending is about reacting, not acting. You can’t control what’s going to come at you. You have no control over what kind of shot you have to stop.”

“His ability to stop back door plays and passes through the seams is the best I’ve seen at his age,” said an NHL scout.

“He makes ridiculous 2-on-1 and backdoor stops because of his power and his reads,” said Wroblewski.

Some pretty strong statements here. The overall theme of the article is whether to take him in the top 15. Pronman isn't convinced but thinks he could go there. There have only been 4 goalies drafted in the late first round in the past 8 years and none in the top 10. Regardless of where he's drafted, looks like there won't be much of a speed bump on the way to replace Woll.
